Emerging Pulp and Paper Industry in Thailand
DVD-based distance-learning program for university entrance exams -- RCT experiments in rural Bangladesh
In contrast to the remarkable progress in developing countries in improving primary education, access to higher education in many countries remains limited, especially in rural areas where the quality of education is inadequate. We evaluate a DVD-based distance-learning program in rural Bangladesh, targeted at students aiming to take university entrance tests. We conducted two experiments: one to evaluate the effect of the distance-learning program and the second to determine the demand and price sensitivity. Our first experiment shows that the DVD-based distance-learning program has a considerable positive effect on the number of students passing entrance exams. This effect does not depend on cognitive scores, but does depend on non-cognitive attributes, indicating the importance of commitment, which is imposed through our program. In the second experiment, we offered a random subsidy to interested participants. The uptake decision is price-sensitive, although the price sensitivity is not correlated with students\u27 past academic performance or their socio-economic status, suggesting that increasing the price should not disproportionately exclude poor students

Thrombolysis with Low-Dose Tissue Plasminogen Activator 3–4.5 h After Acute Ischemic Stroke in Five Hospital Groups in Japan
Clinical data from Japan on the safety and real-world outcomes of alteplase (tPA) thrombolysis in the extended therapeutic window are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and real-world outcomes of tPA administered within 3-4.5 h of stroke onset. The study comprised consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients (n = 177) admitted across five hospitals between September 2012 and August 2014. Patients received intravenous tPA within <3 or 3-4.5 h of stroke onset. Endovascular therapy was used for tPA-refractory patients. In the 3-4.5 h subgroup (31.6 % of patients), tPA was started 85 min later than the <3 h group (220 vs. 135 min, respectively). However, outcome measures were not significantly different between the <3 and 3-4.5 h subgroups for recanalization rate (67.8 vs. 57.1 %), symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (2.5 vs. 3.6 %), modified Rankin Scale score of 0-1 at 3 months (36.0 vs. 23.4 %), and mortality (6.9 vs. 8.3 %). We present data from 2005 to 2012 using a therapeutic window <3 h showing comparable results. tPA following endovascular therapy with recanalization might be superior to tPA only with recanalization (81.0 vs. 59.1 %). Compared with administration within 3 h of ischemic stroke onset, tPA administration within 3-4.5 h of ischemic stroke onset in real-world stroke emergency settings at multiple sites in Japan is as safe and has the same outcomes
Short-term outcomes of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with capecitabine plus oxaliplatin for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer followed by total or tumor-specific mesorectal excision with or without lateral pelvic lymph node dissection
Background: The standard strategy in Japan for locally advanced rectal cancer is total mesorectal excision plus adjuvant chemotherapy. However, large tumors significantly restrict pelvic manipulation of the distal side of the tumor during surgery;therefore, from an oncological point of view, it is better to shrink the tumor as much as possible preoperatively to optimize the circumferential resection margin. In recent years, advances in systemic chemotherapy have significantly improved the tumor reduction effect, enabling such drug therapy prior to surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer. We herein retrospectively evaluated the clinical, short-term outcomes of patients treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) using capecitabin and oxaliplatin (CAPOX), focusing on overall safety as well as clinical and pathological staging responses to NAC. Methods: We applied the preoperative chemotherapy protocol to T3-4, any N, M0 or M1a (with resectable metastases) (UICC 8th) Ra/Rb rectal cancers. The chemotherapy regimen consisted of four cycles of CAPOX. After NAC, curative intent surgery with total mesorectal excision/tumor-specific mesorectal excision with/without metastasectomy was performed. Adverse effects (AEs) and compliance with NAC, surgical complications, clinical and pathological staging were evaluated. All patients undergoing the protocol between January 2017 and June 2021 at Fukushima Medical University were enrolled. Results: Twenty cases were enrolled. No severe AEs were observed either preoperatively or perioperatively. Preoperative assessment of NAC showed no cases of progressive disease (PD). Radical resection was achieved in all cases. Histological therapeutic grading after NAC revealed one grade 3, four grade 2, three grade 1b, eleven grade 1a and one grade 0 among all cases. Conclusion: This study suggests that NAC for locally advanced rectal cancer is likely to be acceptable because there were no severe AEs pre- or perioperatively, radical resection was achieved in all cases, and there were no cases of PD
Japanese multicenter database of healthy controls for [¹²³I]FP-CIT SPECT
Purpose: The aim of this multicenter trial was to generate a [¹²³I]FP-CIT SPECT database of healthy controls from the common SPECT systems available in Japan. Methods: This study included 510 sets of SPECT data from 256 healthy controls (116 men and 140 women; age range, 30–83 years) acquired from eight different centers. Images were reconstructed without attenuation or scatter correction (NOACNOSC), with only attenuation correction using the Chang method (ChangACNOSC) or X-ray CT (CTACNOSC), and with both scatter and attenuation correction using the Chang method (ChangACSC) or X-ray CT (CTACSC). These SPECT images were analyzed using the Southampton method. The outcome measure was the specific binding ratio (SBR) in the striatum. These striatal SBRs were calibrated from prior experiments using a striatal phantom. Results: The original SBRs gradually decreased in the order of ChangACSC, CTACSC, ChangACNOSC, CTACNOSC, and NOACNOSC. The SBRs for NOACNOSC were 46% lower than those for ChangACSC. In contrast, the calibrated SBRs were almost equal under no scatter correction (NOSC) conditions. A significant effect of age was found, with an SBR decline rate of 6.3% per decade. In the 30–39 age group, SBRs were 12.2% higher in women than in men, but this increase declined with age and was absent in the 70–79 age group. Conclusions: This study provided a large-scale quantitative database of [¹²³I]FP-CIT SPECT scans from different scanners in healthy controls across a wide age range and with balanced sex representation. The phantom calibration effectively harmonizes SPECT data from different SPECT systems under NOSC conditions. The data collected in this study may serve as a reference database
Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
