    First measurement of the helicity asymmetry E in eta photoproduction on the proton

    Results are presented for the first measurement of the double-polarization helicity asymmetry E for the eta photoproduction reaction gamma p - \u3e eta p. Data were obtained using the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) with the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab, covering a range of center-of-mass energy W from threshold to 2.15 GeV and a large range in center-of-mass polar angle. As an initial application of these data, the results have been incorporated into the Julich-Bonn model to examine the case for the existence of a narrow N* resonance between 1.66 and 1.70 GeV. The addition of these data to the world database results in marked changes in the predictions for the Eobservable from that model. Further comparison with several theoretical approaches indicates these data will significantly enhance our understanding of nucleon resonances. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V

    Exclusive pi(0) electroproduction at W \u3e 2 GeV with CLAS

    Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction (ep -\u3e e\u27p\u27pi(0)) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d(4)sigma/dtdQ(2)dx(B)d phi(pi) and structure functions sigma(T) + sigma(L), sigma(TT), and sigma(LT) as functions of t were obtained over a wide range of Q(2) and x(B). The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions

    Determination of the beam-spin asymmetry of deuteron photodisintegration in the energy region E-gamma=1.1-2.3 GeV

    The beam-spin asymmetry, Sigma, for the reaction gamma d -\u3e pn has been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) for six photon-energy bins, between 1.1 and 2.3 GeV, and proton angles in the center-of-mass frame, theta(c.m.), between 25 degrees and 160 degrees. These are the first measurements of beam-spin asymmetries at theta(c.m.) = 90. for photon-beam energies above 1.6 GeV, and the first measurements for angles other than theta(c.m.) = 90 degrees. The angular and energy dependence of Sigma is expected to aid in the development of QCD-based models to understand the mechanisms of deuteron photodisintegration in the transition region between hadronic and partonic degrees of freedom, where both effective field theories and perturbative QCD cannot make reliable predictions

    We have measured cross sections for the gamma He-3 -\u3e pd reaction at photon energies of 0.4-1.4 GeV and a center-of-mass angle of 90 degrees. We observe dimensional scaling above 0.7 GeV at this center-of-mass angle. This is the first observation of dimensional scaling in the photodisintegration of a nucleus heavier than the deuteron

    Near-threshold neutral pion electroproduction at high momentum transfers and generalized form factors

    We report the measurement of near-threshold neutral pion electroproduction cross sections and the extraction of the associated structure functions on the proton in the kinematic range Q(2) from 2 to 4.5 GeV2 and W from 1.08 to 1.16 GeV. These measurements allow us to access the dominant pion-nucleon s-wave multipoles E0+ and S0+ in the near-threshold region. In the light-cone sum-rule framework (LCSR), these multipoles are related to the generalized form factors G(1)(pi 0p) (Q(2)) and G(2)(pi 0p) (Q(2)). The data are compared to these generalized form factors and the results for G(1)(pi 0p) (Q(2)) are found to be in good agreement with the LCSR predictions, but the level of agreement with G(2)(pi 0p) (Q(2)) is poor.     Epithelial cells in nipple aspirate fluid and subsequent breast cancer risk: A historic prospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Past studies have shown that women with abnormal cytology or epithelial cells in nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) have an increased relative risk (RR) of breast cancer when compared to women from whom NAF was attempted but not obtained (non-yielders). This study analyzed NAF results from a group of women seen in a breast clinic between 1970–1991 (N = 2480). Our analysis presented here is an aggregate of two sub-groups: women with questionnaire data (n = 712) and those with NAF visits beginning in 1988 (n = 238), the year in which cancer case information was uniformly collected in California.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cytological classification was determined for a group of 946 women using the most abnormal epithelial cytology observed in fluid specimens. Breast cancer incidence and mortality status was determined through June 2006 using data from the California Cancer Registry, California Vital Statistics and self-report. We estimated odd ratios (ORs) for breast cancer using logistic regression analysis, adjusting for age. We analyzed breast cancer risk related to abnormality of NAF cytology using non-yielders as the referent group and breast cancer risk related to the presence or absence of epithelial cells in NAF, using non-yielders/fluid without epithelial cells as the referent group.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Overall, 10% (93) of the 946 women developed breast cancer during the follow-up period. Age-adjusted ORs and 95% confidence intervals (C.I.) compared to non-yielders were 1.4 (0.3 to 6.4), 1.7 (0.9 to 3.5), and 2.0 (1.1 to 3.6) for women with fluid without epithelial cells, normal epithelial cells and hyperplasia/atypia, respectively. Comparing the presence or absence of epithelial cells in NAF, women with epithelial cells present in NAF were more likely to develop breast cancer than non-yielders or women with fluid without epithelial cells (RR = 1.9, 1.2 to 3.1).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results support previous findings that 1) women with abnormal epithelial cells in NAF have an increased risk of breast cancer when compared to non-yielders or women with normal epithelial cells in NAF and 2) women with epithelial cells present in NAF have an increased risk of breast cancer when compared to non-yielders or women who had NAF without epithelial cells present.</p
