The disharmony of parents and children in online learning during the pandemic was a crucial phenomenon. This disharmony had caused difficulties for children to improve their learning motivation. In line with that, this study not only mapped out the forms of disharmony between parents and children in online learning but also analyzed the causes behind disharmony and its implications for children’s learning motivation. The data of this study was collected based on interviews with three different groups of informants by taking into account the structural characteristics of the groups. The results of this study showed that the emotional pressure, inability, and unpreparedness of parents and children in dealing with changes in learning traditions during the pandemic had strengthened the disharmony between them. The disharmony had a consequence on the decline in children’s learning motivation in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The inability and unpreparedness of parents to accompany their children in online learning throughout the pandemic were crucial factors that caused disharmony. This study suggested the need to expand the cases studied and added data sources to enable understanding of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the disharmony of parents and children

Coronavirus disease also known as Covid-19 forces society to adapt and change to encounter and stop its spread. Maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness is the method suggested by WHO and the government for dealing with the pandemic. Islam has taught about the virtue of cleanliness in the Quran and hadith long before the Covid-19 pandemic. Likewise, religious authorities such as the MUI issued a fatwa on the topic long before the coronavirus arrived in Indonesia. This research used the literature review method to understand Muslim society's awareness of cleanliness and the impact of Covid-19 on its behaviors. It discovered that the ideal expected of Islam to be aware of cleanliness still showed a gap over the reality that occurred, particularly in Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population. However, the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia has had a positive impact on personal cleanliness. According to a BPS survey, the majority of respondents are more likely to adopt hygiene behavior. Furthermore, Islamic organizations such as MUI, Muhammadiyah, and NU have long emphasized the importance of maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness. One of the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic is the importance of cleanliness, particularly in daily life

The Challenges of Islamic Organizations in Promoting Moderation in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Two leading Islamic organisations in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) have moderation in their missionary vision to create a tolerant, open, and civilised society. This paper explores the challenges of realising Islamic moderation in Indonesia, especially those driven by Muhammadiyah and NU. The data used as the basis for the analysis were obtained from interviews and document studies. The challenge of Islamic moderation initiated by these two organisations is the rise of conservative groups, which have received vast space from the data obtained. This paper emphasised that the rise of conservative groups has resulted in weak respect for other groups. There is even a tendency to resist Islamic groups outside their group. This paper is limited to the internal challenges to Islamic moderation in Indonesia carried out by Muhammadiyah and NU, particularly related to the rise of conservative Islamic groups. Therefore, this paper suggests conducting various studies to provide a basic framework for jointly building a commitment to implement Islamic moderation in Indonesia by looking at other civil society organisations

The focus of this research is to examine the accommodation of Islamic custom and law, especially in determining the beginning and end of the month of Ramadan in indigenous Papuan Muslim communities in West Papua. This determination method is known as the traditional method, which is considered the most accurate in determining the beginning of the month of Ramadan. The community also maintains this method even though it often differs from the government's determination. The analytical method used in this research is phenomenology by looking at people's behaviour as text that can be interpreted and given meaning. The data used as the basis for the analysis of this study were obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation. Observations focused on indigenous peoples' traditions in determining the beginning and end of non-Ramadan. Interviews were conducted with 12 informants of syarak judges (Imam, khatib, muazzin, and marbot) who have knowledge and actors in the traditional method. The study results show that the indigenous people have been practising determining the beginning and end of the month of Ramadan for a long time, carried out by syarak judges consisting of imams, khatib, muazzin, and marbot. They are figures who are considered capable of knowing when the month of Ramadan will arrive. As for the number of days of Ramadan, it must be 30 days, so since the first day is set, it will be counted up to the 30th day. The number of days cannot be less and cannot be more. The limitation of this research lies in the limited time in the research process because it was carried out when there was an outbreak of the Corona Virus Disease 19

This article explores the form of compromise between Islam and local tradition (adat) in the religious practices of Muslims in Bugis community in South Sulawesi. Islam is an integral part of Bugis lives and is positioned as the main reference so that it encourages Bugis community members to become more fanatic than others. However, in some cases, it is not uncommon for religious practices that have traditional nuances. In fact, the local tradition is in a position that exceeds the role of religion as reflected in the celebration of Islamic holidays. This condition allows the attraction between religion and local tradition to occur in the practice of everyday life of the Bugis community. The question is at what level do conflicts and compromises occur between local tradition and religion among the Bugis community? To answer this question, an investigation was carried out using qualitative methods that put forward and applying the techniques of participant observation and literature study. The results show that points of compromise were discovered where religion and local tradition complemented each other. The tendency to compromise Islam and local tradition is motivated by not only the low understanding of religion itself but also the desire to maintain the ancestral local traditions that have been practiced for a long time in their community. The compromise of Islam and local tradition in religious practices have resulted in the escape of their respective positions, and it makes the role of religion tends to weaken

Response of Millennial Muslims to Religious Minority Groups in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Religious minority groups have historically been positioned as the trigger for religious and social disharmony. This paper aims to explore the millennial Muslims’ basis for their positioning towards minority groups in Indonesia. The data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document studies were analyzed and then converted into narrative form, tables, diagrams, and charts. The findings show that there are two millennial Muslim responses towards religious minority groups. First, some are responding with acceptance of non-Islamic affiliated minority groups. Of the 412 surveyed respondents, 280 or 67, 96% stated their acceptance based on the juridical-constitutional reason that every citizen has the same rights and obligations, including the rights to live and obey the law. Representing the second millennial response, most respondents also rejected Islamic-affiliated minority groups. 383 respondents (93%) stated this rejection noting that they believe in the existence of these groups damaging Islam’s image. The different forms of response are based on theological, juridical, and cultural reasons that can be found in religious arguments, legislation, and values of the local wisdom of the Indonesians. This study proposes the need of building better understanding among millennial Muslims regarding social diversity in Indonesia, and finding common ground for these differences that can be applied to avoid religious conflicts in the future
