Ambient particulate matter (PM10) concentrations in major urban areas of Korea during 1996â2010
AbstractIn this study, ambient particulate matter pollution was investigated using monthly PM10 concentration data collected from seven major cities in Korea from 1996 to 2010. The highest mean value for the whole study period is seen from the capital city, Seoul (63.2±17.9ÎŒg mâ3), while the lowest is from Ulsan (46.7±14.8ÎŒg mâ3). The concentrations of PM10 in all cities exhibited seasonal variations with the peak values occurring consistently in spring (March or April). The PM10 data in each city consistently exhibited strong correlations (p<0.01) with gaseous pollutants (SO2, NO2, and CO), except for O3 (p>0.05). The analysis of long term trends of PM10 levels indicates a weak but consistent decline in concentrations in most cities with the relative average annual reductions of between 0.4 and 2.8% yâ1
Transparent and flexible fingerprint sensor array with multiplexed detection of tactile pressure and skin temperature
We developed a transparent and flexible, capacitive fingerprint sensor array with multiplexed, simultaneous detection of tactile pressure and finger skin temperature for mobile smart devices. In our approach, networks of hybrid nanostructures using ultra-long metal nanofibers and finer nanowires were formed as transparent, flexible electrodes of a multifunctional sensor array. These sensors exhibited excellent optoelectronic properties and outstanding reliability against mechanical bending. This fingerprint sensor array has a high resolution with good transparency. This sensor offers a capacitance variation ~17 times better than the variation for the same sensor pattern using conventional ITO electrodes. This sensor with the hybrid electrode also operates at high frequencies with negligible degradation in its performance against various noise signals from mobile devices. Furthermore, this fingerprint sensor array can be integrated with all transparent forms of tactile pressure sensors and skin temperature sensors, to enable the detection of a finger pressing on the display
Enhanced polarization and abnormal flexural deformation in bent freestanding perovskite oxides
Recent realizations of ultrathin freestanding perovskite oxides offer a unique platform to probe novel properties in two-dimensional oxides. Here, we observe a giant flexoelectric response in freestanding BiFeO3 and SrTiO3 in their bent state arising from strain gradients up to 3.5âĂâ107âmâ1, suggesting a promising approach for realizing ultra-large polarizations. Additionally, a substantial change in membrane thickness is discovered in bent freestanding BiFeO3, which implies an unusual bending-expansion/shrinkage effect in the ferroelectric membrane that has never been seen before in crystalline materials. Our theoretical model reveals that this unprecedented flexural deformation within the membrane is attributable to a flexoelectricityâpiezoelectricity interplay. The finding unveils intriguing nanoscale electromechanical properties and provides guidance for their practical applications in flexible nanoelectromechanical systems
Second-Line Irinotecan, Leucovorin, and 5-Fluorouracil for Gastric Cancer Patients after Failed Docetaxel and S-1
Background. This retrospective study aimed to assess the efficacy and toxicities of second-line chemotherapy with irinotecan, leucovorin, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in metastatic gastric cancer (MGC) patients previously treated with docetaxel and S-1 with or without oxaliplatin (DS/DOS). Patients and Methods. We reviewed the data of patients who had previously been treated with first-line DS/DOS and received biweekly irinotecan-based chemotherapy (FOLFIRI/IFL) between October 2004 and November 2011. Results. A total of 209 cycles were administered to 35 patients, with a median of 4 (range, 1â22) cycles each. The overall response rate in 29 response-assessable patients was 17.2%, including 2 complete and 3 partial responses. The median progression-free and overall survivals were 3.81 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.82â5.80) months and 6.24 (95% CI, 1.44â11.04) months, respectively. The major grade 3/4 toxicity was neutropenia (8.6%). Conclusion. FOLFIRI/IFL chemotherapy showed modest antitumour activity and tolerable toxicities in DS/DOS-treated MGC patients

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in th p pbar mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gamma p pbar decays
We observe a narrow enhancement near 2mp in the invariant mass spectrum of
ppbar pairs from radiative J/psi-->gamma ppbar decays. The enhancement can be
fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit Wigner fuction. In the case of the S-wave
fit, the peak mass is below the 2mp threshold and the full width is less than
30 MeV. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of

Glial contribution to excitatory and inhibitory synapse loss in neurodegeneration
Synapse loss is an early feature shared by many neurodegenerative diseases, and it represents the major correlate of cognitive impairment. Recent studies reveal that microglia and astrocytes play a major role in synapse elimination, contributing to network dysfunction associated with neurodegeneration. Excitatory and inhibitory activity can be affected by glia-mediated synapse loss, resulting in imbalanced synaptic transmission and subsequent synaptic dysfunction. Here, we review the recent literature on the contribution of glia to excitatory/inhibitory imbalance, in the context of the most common neurodegenerative disorders. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying pathological synapse loss will be instrumental to design targeted therapeutic interventions, taking in account the emerging roles of microglia and astrocytes in synapse remodeling
Evidence of psi(3770) non-DD-bar Decay to J/psi pi+pi-
Evidence of decays to a non- final state is
observed. A total of \psi(3770) \to \PPJP events are
obtained from a data sample of 27.7 taken at center-of-mass
energies around 3.773 GeV using the BES-II detector at the BEPC. The branching
fraction is determined to be BF(\psi(3770) \to \PPJP)=(0.34\pm 0.14 \pm
0.09)%, corresponding to the partial width of \Gamma(\psi(3770) \to \PPJP) =
