    Analog tree-organized multiplexer

    An analog tree-organized multiplexer (ATOM) which is intended for use in the telemetry system of an interplanetary spacecraft is designed. The ATOM will be fabricated by a monolithic, dielectric isolation process, and will contain silicon junction field effect transistors (JFET) as the active elements. The effect of the radiation environment on the performance of the ATOM is analyzed. The result indicates that the expected radiation environment will cause only minor changes in the preradiation characteristics of ATOM. The JFET in the ATOM is designed to meet the electrical requirements when fabricated by either the double poly-dielectric isolation process or the raised dielectric isolation process. The effect of the heat treatment required for the dielectric isolation process on the diffusion profile of the JFET is described. The layout of the ATOM circuit for fabrication by either the double poly or raised dielectric isolation process is also given

    Human Telomeres Are Tethered to the Nuclear Envelope during Postmitotic Nuclear Assembly

    SummaryTelomeres are essential for nuclear organization in yeast and during meiosis in mice. Exploring telomere dynamics in living human cells by advanced time-lapse confocal microscopy allowed us to evaluate the spatial distribution of telomeres within the nuclear volume. We discovered an unambiguous enrichment of telomeres at the nuclear periphery during postmitotic nuclear assembly, whereas telomeres were localized more internally during the rest of the cell cycle. Telomere enrichment at the nuclear rim was mediated by physical tethering of telomeres to the nuclear envelope, most likely via specific interactions between the shelterin subunit RAP1 and the nuclear envelope protein Sun1. Genetic interference revealed a critical role in cell-cycle progression for Sun1 but no effect on telomere positioning for RAP1. Our results shed light on the dynamic relocalization of human telomeres during the cell cycle and suggest redundant pathways for tethering telomeres to the nuclear envelope

    Cricket, migration and diasporic communities

    Ever since different communities began processes of global migration, sport has been an integral feature in how we conceptualise and experience the notion of being part of a diaspora. Sport provides diasporic communities with a powerful means for creating transnational ties, but also shapes ideas of their ethnic and racial identities. In spite of this, theories of diaspora have been applied sparingly to sporting discourses. Due mainly to its central role in spreading dominant white racial narratives within the British Empire, and the various ways different ethnic groups have ‘played’ with the meanings and associations of the sport in the (post-)colonial period, cricket is an interesting focus for academic research. Despite W.G. Grace’s claim that cricket advances civilisation by promoting a common bond, binding together peoples of vastly different backgrounds, to this day cricket operates strict symbolic boundaries; defining those who do, and equally, do not belong. C.L.R. James’ now famous metaphor of looking ‘beyond the boundary’ captures the belief that, to fully understand the significance of cricket, and the sport’s roles in changing and shaping society, one must consider the wider social and political contexts within which the game is played.
