Caltech and aeronautics: a presentation by the California Institute of Technology

    Get PDF
The outstanding accomplishment of Caltech in the field of aeronautics is not that it has taught, but that it has always had something new to teach. When most aircraft were glued together from bamboo, balsawood, and canvas, Caltech was teaching the next generation of designers how to build hollow shells of stiffened sheet metal. Today, at the threshold of the Space Age, Caltech is combining astronomy, mathematics, physics, mechanics and chemistry into a new sort of aeronautical science, tailored to the needs of a new era that knows no spatial limitations. To an important extent, Caltech's contributions to industrial and military aeronautics have been made possible, through the years, by equally valuable contributions, in the form of men, money, and equipment, from industry and government. This support has filled a vital need in the past; it will become even more important in the future. The following pages tell something of Caltech's role in aeronautics, its research accomplishments, its success as a teacher of men. Most important, this booklet sets forth the direction of Caltech's present and future research. It is an exciting vista

Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), IT Tallaght and IT Blanchardstown hosted the Science Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC 2015) on 13th November 2015 in DIT\u27s Grangegorman Campus. 25 students from DIT, IT Tallaght and IT Blanchardstown who completed an undergraduate research project in a Scientific discipline in the academic year 2014-15 presented at this conference. The aims of the conference were to: Provide current students with an opportunity to gain an understanding of the work which has been undertaken by recent graduates, and the career opportunities that exist for graduates in Scientific disciplines. Provide recent graduates with an opportunity to gain a reviewed publication based on the scientific research undertaken by them during their undergraduate studies. Celebrate the academic achievements of recent graduates in the scientific disciplines. Provide a multi-disciplinary scientific forum through which undergraduate research outputs can be disseminated to students, researchers, academic professionals and industry

Participation in a Platform Ecosystem: Appropriability, Competition, andAccess to the Installed Base

In this study we examine the antecedents of small independent software vendor (ISV) decisions to join a platform ecosystem. Using data on the history of partnering activities from 1201 ISVs from 1996 to 2004, we find that appropriability strategies based on intellectual property rights and the possession of downstream complementary capabilities by ISVs are positively related to partnership formation, and ISVs use these two mechanisms as substitutes to prevent expropriation by the platform owner. In addition, we show that greater competition in downstream product markets between the ISV and the platform owner is associated with a lower likelihood of partnership formation, while the platform's penetration into the ISV's target industries is positively associated with the propensity to partner. The results highlight the role of innovation appropriation, downstream complementary capabilities, and collaborative competition in the formation of a platform ecosystem

Network Neutrality and Congestion Sensitive Content Providers: Implications for Service Innovation, Broadband Investment and Regulation

    Get PDF
We consider a two-sided market model with a monopolistic Internet Service Provider (ISP), network congestion sensitive content providers (CPs), and Internet customers in order to study the impact of Quality- of-Service (QoS) tiering on service innovation, broadband investments, and welfare in comparison to network neutrality. We find that QoS tiering is the more efficient regime in the short-run. However it does not promote entry by new, congestion sensitive CPs, because the ISP can expropriate much of the CPs' surplus. In the long-run, QoS tiering may lead to more or less broadband capacity and welfare, depending on the competition-elasticity of CPs' revenues
