    Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice in the presence of fermions in the adjoint and fundamental representations with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue phases of Polyakov loops and the associated susceptibility are measured on 16^3 x 4 lattice. We establish a correspondence between the phases found on the lattice and the gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, prepared for the 31st International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory - LATTICE 2013 Added preprint number

The Field of aBetweena a A New Principle for Interdisciplinary Epistemology

Contrary to the established field of mathematical philosophy interdisciplinary research in physics and philosophy is not well known Of course there are the writings of physicists for the nonscientific public introducing selected topics for mass media distribution Yet in the presentation of highly advanced theories to an audience of physicists reflections on philosophy do not have a place On the other hand reports are written by specialists in scientific theory in which the authors oppose the traditional philosophy of continental Europe Since the 19th century renowned philosophers have put forward theories interpreting areas of natural science trying to insert them into the framework of methods traditionally applied in natural philosophy What is lacking is an interdisciplinary philosophical reflection for contemporary science in which a philosopher is able to grasp the principles of physical thinking reflecting physical theory in relation to the fundamental philosophical conception of the subject What is Truth To achieve this purpose for interdisciplinary research philosophers should have a fundamental knowledge of physics Vice versa physicists should also learn the purpose of philosophical reflection and what the goals of philosophy are The philosophy of science does not offer the same explanations for theories in physics or other natural sciences but its goal is a fundamental reflection of What is truth as a common basis for different intellectual discipline

"Land Tenure Security and Home Maintenance: Evidence from Japan"

    Get PDF
This paper considers two land tenure modes. leasehold and freehold. and models housing maintenance incentives under land tenure security in Japan. Compared with freeholders, leaseholders are equally likely to remain in the premises, but spend less on home maintenance, because leaseholders are not full residual claimants, even under land tenure security. The empirical results show that maintenance expenditures of leaseholders are about 30% lower than those of freeholders in the Japanese residential land market. Empirical evidence also indicates that leaseholders are equally likely to remain in their premises even when they undermaintain their dwellings.

Present and Projected Australian Coal Supply Capacity : Impacts of Global Recession and Expansion in Coal Exports to China

    Get PDF
Australias coal exports in 2008 totaled 252 million tons, accounting for 26.9% of global coal trade (in terms of exports) at 938 million tons. Although Indonesia has expanded its coal exports over recent years and reported exports in 2008 at 203 million tons, Australia has remained unshaken as the worlds largest coal exporter. Coal demand in Japan and European industrial countries has plunged on the global financial/economic crisis since the autumn of 2008. Their coal imports have thus declined. But China has expanded coal demand on the strength of high economic growth and increased coal imports more rapidly than earlier due to high domestic coal prices. Australias coal exports have maintained an upward trend even amid the global recession. In response to growing coal demand, new coalfield development and other projects are planned to expand production in Australia. This report considers the past results and future projections of Australias coal production and exports and its future coal supply capacity including estimated output under new coalmine development projects. It also covers the realities of a sharp increase in Australias coal exports to China in 2009.coal exports, Australia, Japan

Nonuniversal ZZ^{\prime} couplings in B decays

We study the impacts of nonuniversal ZZ^{\prime} model, providing flavor changing neutral current at tree level, on the branching ratios (BRs), CP asymmetries (CPAs) and polarization fractions of B decays. We find that for satisfying the current data, the new left- and right-handed couplings have to be included at the same time. The new introduced effective interactions not only could effectively explain the puzzle of small longitudinal polarization in BKϕB\to K^* \phi decays, but also provide a solution to the small CPA of B±π0K±B^{\pm}\to \pi^{0} K^{\pm}. We also find that the favorable CPA of B±π0K±B^{\pm}\to \pi^{0} K^{\pm} is opposite in sign to the standard model; meanwhile, the CPA of Bdπ0KB_{d}\to \pi^{0}K has to be smaller than -10%. In addition, by using the values of parameters which are constrained by BπKB\to \pi K, we find that the favorable ranges of BRs, CPAs, longitudinal polarizations, and perpendicular transverse polarizations for (B±ρ±K,BdρK±)(B^{\pm}\to \rho^{\pm} K^{*}, B_{d}\to \rho^{\mp} K^{*\pm}) are (17.1±3.9,10.0±2.0)×106(17.1\pm 3.9, 10.0\pm2.0)\times 10^{-6}, (3±5,21±7)(3\pm 5, 21\pm 7)%, (0.66±0.10,0.44±0.08)(0.66\pm 0.10, 0.44\pm 0.08) and (0.14±0.10,0.25±0.09)(0.14\pm 0.10, 0.25\pm 0.09), respectively.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, version revise
