Design of resonant microcavities: application to optical gyroscopes
We study theoretically and numerically the effect of rotation on resonant
frequencies of microcavities in a rotating frame of reference. Cavity rotation
causes the shifts of the resonant frequencies proportional to the rotation rate
if it is larger than a certain value. Below the value, a region of rotation
rate exists where there is no resulting the frequency shifts proportional to
the rotation rate. We show that designing cavity symmetry as () can eliminate this region.Comment: 10 page
An analytic approximation to the Diffusion Coefficient for the periodic Lorentz Gas
An approximate stochastic model for the topological dynamics of the periodic
triangular Lorentz gas is constructed. The model, together with an extremum
principle, is used to find a closed form approximation to the diffusion
coefficient as a function of the lattice spacing. This approximation is
superior to the popular Machta and Zwanzig result and agrees well with a range
of numerical estimates.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
University-local industry linkages : the case of Tohoku University in the Sendai area of Japan
This paper focuses on Tohoku University in Sendai in the nonmetropolitan area of Japan. Both a long historical and comparative perspective and a spacial perspective are essential to discuss the relevance of university-local industry linkages to local regional economic development. The conjunction of these linkages and economic development has been affected by two evolutionary processes: institutional configurations and territorial dynamics in the national innovation system. In addition, university-local industry linkages have been complicated by top-down regionalization and bottom-up regionalism.Tertiary Education,ICT Policy and Strategies,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems,Technology Industry,Rural Development Knowledge&Information Systems
Parent and teacher perspectives on friendships and social interactions of secondary students with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) remain infrequent, especially at the secondary level. However, when friendships between students with and without IDD have developed, direct support from parents and teachers has been a critical facilitator. Thus, this qualitative study examined parent (n = 10) and teacher (n = 20) perspectives on friendships and social interactions of middle and high school students with IDD receiving special education services in inclusive settings at least part of the day. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with each participant and analyzed inductively utilizing a multi stage process of open and then thematic coding. The thematic findings suggest that the challenge of friendship development between students with and without IDD is ongoing, though there may be potential in focusing more explicitly and intentionally on increasing social interaction opportunities both in and out of school. Implications for future research and practice are described in the context of supporting students with and without IDD to increase social interactions and develop friendships
Sagnac effect in resonant microcavities
The Sagnac effect in two dimensional (2D) resonant microcavities is studied theoretically and numerically. The frequency shift due to the Sagnac effect occurs as a threshold phenomenon for the angular velocity in a rotating microcavity. Above the threshold, the eigenfunctions of a rotating microcavity become rotating waves while they are standing waves below the threshold
