    State-developed housing in Korea: a case study from Seoul.

    This study is concerned with the problems of low-income housing in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. In considering Korean housing policy it focusses on the role of the public sector and the attempts that are currently being made to supply state-developed housing for urban low-income groups in Seoul. The overall aim is to highlight the major factors governing the formulation of a housing policy for the achievement of a high level of public satisfaction, socioeconomic fulfilment and environmental quality. With the over-concentration of wealth and emplovment opportunities in the capital in recent years, the housing shortage has grown increasingly acute. A massive growth in illegal housing and squatter settlements has been the predictable result. The consequence of limited public investment in the housing sector is that it is practically impossible to allocate sufficient resources for the housing needs of the low-income group, and without a clear understanding of the needs of the recipient population. Paradoxically, it was found that state-developed housing in Seoul tended to aid the middle or upper income groups. These groups often consume a vastly disproportionate share of housing resources. whatever funds and resources are available should in effect be rationed to meet the most urgent needs for shelter. In order to achieve the objectives of this study and to widen the range of information available to establish a firm basis for the analysis of the current housing situation, it was necessary to collect data about existing state-developed housing, both in terms of the machinery of provision and the dwellings constructed. General information was collected about housing institutions, about finance, and about laws and regulations affecting state-developed housing. Information about particular housing Danchis(estates) of varying types was collected in Seoul to form the starting point for a household survey designed to build up a more detailed picture of the physical character of dwellings, dwelling control, environmental locus, relative locus, housing mobility and the burden of financing. The resulting analysis, and discussions based on the field survey and investigations, made possible an examination of a wide range of information which is closely related to the residential and social functions of housing development. The thesis concludes with recommendations, and with an alternative policy strategy drawn from the various strands of the research, which might be used as a basis for a rational, equitable housing policy both in the medium and long term

    Genome sequence of Jatropha curcas L., a non-edible biodiesel plant, provides a resource to improve seed-related traits

    Jatropha curcas (physic nut), a non‐edible oilseed crop, represents one of the most promising alternative energy sources due to its high seed oil content, rapid growth and adaptability to various environments. We report ~339 Mbp draft whole genome sequence of J. curcas var. Chai Nat using both the PacBio and Illumina sequencing platforms. We identified and categorized differentially expressed genes related to biosynthesis of lipid and toxic compound among four stages of seed development. Triacylglycerol (TAG), the major component of seed storage oil, is mainly synthesized by phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase in Jatropha, and continuous high expression of homologs of oleosin over seed development contributes to accumulation of high level of oil in kernels by preventing the breakdown of TAG. A physical cluster of genes for diterpenoid biosynthetic enzymes, including casbene synthases highly responsible for a toxic compound, phorbol ester, in seed cake, was syntenically highly conserved between Jatropha and castor bean. Transcriptomic analysis of female and male flowers revealed the up‐regulation of a dozen family of TFs in female flower. Additionally, we constructed a robust species tree enabling estimation of divergence times among nine Jatropha species and five commercial crops in Malpighiales order. Our results will help researchers and breeders increase energy efficiency of this important oil seed crop by improving yield and oil content, and eliminating toxic compound in seed cake for animal feed

    Study of charmonia in four-meson final states produced in two-photon collisions

    We report measurements of charmonia produced in two-photon collisions and decaying to four-meson final states, where the meson is either a charged pion or a charged kaon. The analysis is based on a 395fb^{-1} data sample accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. We observe signals for the three C-even charmonia eta_c(1S), chi_{c0}(1P) and chi_{c2}(1P) in the pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-, K^+K^-pi^+pi^- and K^+K^-K^+K^- decay modes. No clear signals for eta_c(2S) production are found in these decay modes. We have also studied resonant structures in charmonium decays to two-body intermediate meson resonances. We report the products of the two-photon decay width and the branching fractions, Gamma_{gamma gamma}B, for each of the charmonium decay modes.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure

    Measurement of the ratio B(D0->pi+pi-pi0)/B(D0->K-pi+pi0) and the time-integrated CP asymmetry in D0->pi+pi-pi0

    We report a high-statistics measurement of the relative branching fraction B(D0->pi+pi-pi0)/B(D0->K-pi+pi0) using a 532 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The measured value of the relative branching fraction is B(D0->pi+pi-pi0)/B(D0->K-pi+pi0) = (10.12 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.18(syst))x10^{-2} which has an accuracy comparable to the world average. We also present a measurement of the time-integrated CP asymmetry in D0->pi+pi-pi0 decay. The result, A_{CP} = (0.43 +/- 1.30)%, shows no significant CP violation.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Physics Letters

    Measurement of CP asymmetry in Cabibbo suppressed D0 decays

    We measure the CP-violating asymmetries in decays to the D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi- CP eigenstates using 540 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Cabibbo-favored D0 -> K-pi+ decays are used to correct for systematic detector effects. The results, A_{CP}^{KK} = (-0.43 +- 0.30 +- 0.11)% and A_{CP}^{pipi} = (+0.43 +- 0.52 +- 0.12)%, are consistent with no CP violation.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.

    The COSINE-100 liquid scintillator veto system

    This paper describes the liquid scintillator veto system for the COSINE-100 dark matter experiment and its performance. The COSINE-100 detector consists of eight NaI(Tl) crystals immersed in 2200 L of linear alkylbenzene-based liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator tags between 65 and 75% of the internal 40K background in the 2–6 keV energy region. We also describe the background model for the liquid scintillator, which is primarily used to assess its energy calibration and threshold

    Measurement of the cosmic muon annual and diurnal flux variation with the COSINE-100 detector

    We report measurements of annual and diurnal modulations of the cosmic-ray muon rate in the Yangyang underground laboratory (Y2L) using 952 days of COSINE-100 data acquired between September 2016 and July 2019. A correlation of the muon rate with the atmospheric temperature is observed and its amplitude on the muon rate is determined. The effective atmospheric temperature and muon rate variations are positively correlated with a measured effective temperature coefficient of αT = 0.80 ± 0.11. This result is consistent with a model of meson production in the atmosphere. We also searched for a diurnal modulation in the underground muon rate by comparing one-hour intervals. No significant diurnal modulation of the muon rate was observed

    A Low-Footprint Java-to-Native Compilation Scheme Using Formal Methods

    Ahead-of-Time and Just-in-Time compilation are common ways to improve runtime performances of restrained systems like Java Card by turning critical Java methods into native code. However, native code is much bigger than Java bytecode, which severely limits or even forbids these practices for devices with memory constraints. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a method for reducing natively-compiled code by suppressing runtime exception check sites, which are emitted when compiling bytecodes that may potentially throw runtime exceptions. This is made possible by completing the Java program with JML annotations, and using a theorem prover in order to formally prove that the compiled methods never throw runtime exceptions. Runtime exception check sites can then safely be removed from the generated native code, as it is proved they will never be entered. We have experimented our approach on several card-range and embedded Java applications, and were able to remove almost all the exception check sites. Results show memory footprints for native code that are up to 70% smaller than the non-optimized version, and sometimes as low than 115% the size of the Java bytecode when compiled for ARM thumb
