The role of octadecanoids and functional mimics in soybean defense responses
Oxylipins of the jasmonate pathway and synthetic functional analogs have been analyzed for their elicitor like activities in an assay based on the induced accumulation of glyceollins, the phytoalexins of soybean (Glycine max L.), in cell suspension cultures of this plant. Jasmonic acid (JA) and its methyl ester showed weak phytoalexininducing activity when compared to an early jasmonate biosynthetic precursor, 12-oxophytodienoic acid (OPDA), as well as to the bacterial phytotoxin coronatine and certain 6-substituted indanoylLisoleucine methyl esters, which all were highly active. Interestingly, different octadecanoids and indanoyl conjugates induced the accumulation of transcripts of various defenserelated genes to different degrees, indicating distinct induction competencies. Therefore, these signaling compounds and mimics were further analyzed for their effects on signal transduction elements, such as the transient enhancement of the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration and MAP kinase activation, which are known to be initiated by a soybean pathogenderived {[}beta]glucan elicitor. In contrast to the {[}beta]glucan elicitor, none of the other compounds tested triggered these early signaling elements. Moreover, endogenous levels of OPDA and JA in soybean cells were shown to be unaffected after treatment with {[}beta]glucans. Thus, OPDA and JA, which are functionally mimicked by coronatine and a variety of 6-substituted derivatives of indanoylLisoleucine methyl ester, represent highly efficient signaling compounds of a lipidbased pathway not deployed in the {[}beta]glucan elicitorinitiated signal transduction
Mixing in a stratified shear flow: Energetics and sampling
Direct numerical simulations of the time evolution of homogeneous stably stratified shear flows have been performed for Richardson numbers from 0 to 1 and for Prandtl numbers between 0.1 and 2. The results indicate that mixing efficiency R(sub f) varies with turbulent Froude number in a manner consistent with laboratory experiments performed with Prandtl numbers of 0.7 and 700. However, unlike the laboratory results, for a particular Froude number, the simulations do not show a clear dependence on the magnitude of R(sub f) on Pr. The observed maximum value of R(sub f) is 0.25. When averaged over vertical length scales of an order of magnitude greater than either the overturning or Ozmidov scales of the flow, the simulations indicate that the dissipation rate epsilon is only weakly lognormally distributed with an intermittency of about 0.01 whereas estimated values in the ocean are 3 to 7
Finite-gap Solutions of the Vortex Filament Equation: Isoperiodic Deformations
We study the topology of quasiperiodic solutions of the vortex filament
equation in a neighborhood of multiply covered circles. We construct these
solutions by means of a sequence of isoperiodic deformations, at each step of
which a real double point is "unpinched" to produce a new pair of branch points
and therefore a solution of higher genus. We prove that every step in this
process corresponds to a cabling operation on the previous curve, and we
provide a labelling scheme that matches the deformation data with the knot type

Ricci Solitons and Einstein-Scalar Field Theory
B List has recently studied a geometric flow whose fixed points correspond to
static Ricci flat spacetimes. It is now known that this flow is in fact Ricci
flow modulo pullback by a certain diffeomorphism. We use this observation to
associate to each static Ricci flat spacetime a local Ricci soliton in one
higher dimension. As well, solutions of Euclidean-signature Einstein gravity
coupled to a free massless scalar field with nonzero cosmological constant are
associated to shrinking or expanding Ricci solitons. We exhibit examples,
including an explicit family of complete expanding solitons which can be
thought of as a Ricci flow for a complete Lorentzian metric. The possible
generalization to Ricci-flat stationary metrics leads us to consider an

Rotational symmetry of self-similar solutions to the Ricci flow
Let (M,g) be a three-dimensional steady gradient Ricci soliton which is
non-flat and \kappa-noncollapsed. We prove that (M,g) is isometric to the
Bryant soliton up to scaling. This solves a problem mentioned in Perelman's

Evaluating academic and media nongovernmental organization partnerships for participatory data gathering
This article discusses participatory methods for data gathering in the context of a partnership between a Swiss-based media development organization, Fondation Hirondelle, and a research team at the University of Sheffield. In 2018–2019, the partnership conducted fieldwork which focused on the impact of radio on women listeners in Niger. The project used participatory methods of data gathering in the form of workshops and focus group discussions (FGDs). The article examines the advantages and limitations of combining the practical experience of international development organizations and the in-depth research capabilities of academia. To triangulate this collaboration and to navigate the limitations of FGDs, the use of workshops is discussed as an important method for providing feedback among the radio practitioners and experts in Niger. The article examines the usefulness of combining these methods and reshaping their application to promote participatory research with radio audiences and practitioners
Conservation laws for vacuum tetrad gravity
Ten conservation laws in useful polynomial form are derived from a Cartan
form and Exterior Differential System (EDS) for the tetrad equations of vacuum
relativity. The Noether construction of conservation laws for well posed EDS is
introduced first, and an illustration given, deriving 15 conservation laws of
the free field Maxwell Equations from symmetries of its EDS. The Maxwell EDS
and tetrad gravity EDS have parallel structures, with their numbers of
dependent variables, numbers of generating 2-forms and generating 3-forms, and
Cartan character tables all in the ratio of 1 to 4. They have 10 corresponding
symmetries with the same Lorentz algebra, and 10 corresponding conservation

Developments and prospects for biological control of Prosopis (Leguminosae) in South Africa
South Africa was the first country to deploy biological control (biocontrol) against invasive Prosopis populations. Developments in this regard have been ongoing, and have been reviewed, at approximately 10-year intervals, since 1991. This review spans the period 2011-2020, a timespan globally characterised by increased awareness of the impacts of invasive Prosopis populations, and recognition of the need for improved management. Concerted international collaboration has resulted in enhanced clarity on phylogenetic relationships within the Leguminosae and the phylogenetic placement of Prosopis. These advances have improved the framework for interpreting the host range of potential agents and for evaluating risk. At the outset of the biocontrol programme, in the 1980s, only agents that consumed mature seeds were considered. The intention was to reduce the invasiveness of Prosopis while simultaneously retaining it as a usable resource. The programme was subsequently expanded to investigate agents that prevent pod set or maturation of seed. More recently, potential agents that damage the vegetative growth of the plants have been included in response to recognition in South Africa, that there is no other route to successful management of Prosopis.
