This paper reports on the life of the English Country trader Captain Frazer Sinclair leading up to and following the loss of the Forbes in the Karimata Strait in 1806. Critical loads for nutrient nitrogen for soil-vegetation systems
Members of the UK Critical Loads Advisory Group (CLAG) have calculated critical loads for nutrient nitrogen to produce maps for Great Britain. The results of three methods, based upon the conclusions from the Lokeberg workshop are described below. Two of these methods use the empirical approachand the other the steady state equation ("mass balance") for nitrogen saturation
Phase II of the ASCE Benchmark Study on SHM
The task group on structural health monitoring of the Dynamic Committee of ASCE was formed in
1999 at the 12
th
Engineering Mechanics Conference. The task group has designed a number of analytical
studies on a benchmark structure and there are plans to follow these with an experimental program. The
first phase of the analytical studies was completed in 2001. The second phase, initiated in the summer of
2001, was formulated in the light of the experience gained on phase I and focuses on increasing realism in
the simulation of the discrepancies between the actual structure and the mathematical model used in the
analysis. This paper describes the rational that lead the SHM task group to the definition of phase II and
presents the details of the cases that are being considered

A Linguistic Approach to the Problem of Slot Semantics
Most frame-based knowledge representation (KR) systems have two strange features. First, the concepts represented by the nodes are nouns rather than verbs. Verbal ideas tend to appear mostly in describing roles or slots. Thus the systems are asymmetric. Second, and more seriously, the slot names on frames are arbitrary and not defined in the system. Usually no metasystem is given to account for them. Thus the systems are not closed. Both these features can be avoided by structures inspired by case-based linguistic theories. The basic ideas are that an ontology consists of separate, parallel lattices of verbal and nominal concepts, and that the slots of concepts in each lattice are defined by reference to the concepts in the other lattice. Slots of verbal concepts are derived from cases, and restricted by nominal concepts. Slots of nominal concepts include conducts (verbal concepts) and derivatives of the slots of verbal concepts. Our objective in this paper is not to define a new KR language, but to use input from the study of natural cognition (case grammar) to refine technology for artificial cognition

Thermodynamics of an attractive 2D Fermi gas
Thermodynamic properties of matter are conveniently expressed as functional
relations between variables known as equations of state. Here we experimentally
determine the compressibility, density and pressure equations of state for an
attractive 2D Fermi gas in the normal phase as a function of temperature and
interaction strength. In 2D, interacting gases exhibit qualitatively different
features to those found in 3D. This is evident in the normalized density
equation of state, which peaks at intermediate densities corresponding to the
crossover from classical to quantum behaviour.Comment: Contains minor revision
Contact and sum-rules in a near-uniform Fermi gas at unitarity
We present an experimental study of the high-energy excitation spectra of
unitary Fermi gases. Using focussed beam Bragg spectroscopy, we locally probe
atoms in the central region of a harmonically trapped cloud where the density
is nearly uniform, enabling measurements of the dynamic structure factor for a
range of temperatures both below and above the superfluid transition. Applying
sum-rules to the measured Bragg spectra, we resolve the characteristic
behaviour of the universal contact parameter, , across the superfluid
transition. We also employ a recent theoretical result for the kinetic
(second-moment) sum-rule to obtain the internal energy of gases at unitarity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Fast-slow asymptotic for semi-analytical ignition criteria in FitzHugh-Nagumo system
We study the problem of initiation of excitation waves in the FitzHugh-Nagumo
model. Our approach follows earlier works and is based on the idea of
approximating the boundary between basins of attraction of propagating waves
and of the resting state as the stable manifold of a critical solution. Here,
we obtain analytical expressions for the essential ingredients of the theory by
singular perturbation using two small parameters, the separation of time scales
of the activator and inhibitor, and the threshold in the activator's kinetics.
