    This series contains original correspondence, despatches and their enclosures that were sent to the Board of Trade and to the Secretary of State from the civil administrators at Newfoundland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It contains reports and petitions that relate to the fishery, trade and defence of Newfoundland. -- The digital collection features volumes 1-120, covering 1696-1844.Vols. 1-20 include correspondence with the Board of Trade, 1696-1782; vol. 21 is a "Miscellaneous" volume for 1730-1793; vols. 22-120 comprise correspondence with the Secretary of State, 1702-1844; vol. 37 is a “Miscellaneous” volume for 1783-1786; vol. 41 contains “Promiscuous Papers” for 1771-1798. Beginning with vol. 57 (1816), an annual list of correspondence giving the date, author and brief description is sometimes given at the end of the Governor's correspondence.Title from the Colonial Office records subdivision number, which is how the series is commonly referred to; alternative title from cataloguing title. -- Caution: due to either handwriting or pale type, some document text is not searchable
