Vector boson production in association with jets in CMS

The study of the associated production of vector bosons and jets constitutes an excellent environment to check numerous QCD predictions. Total and differential cross sections of vector bosons produced in association with jets have been studied in pp collisions using CMS data. Differential distributions as a function of a broad range of kinematical observables are measured and compared with theoretical predictions. In this talk, studies of associated production of vector bosons with inclusive jets and with jets originating from heavy-flavour quarks will be summarized.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the 41st International Conference on High Energy physics - ICHEP2022, Bologna, Italy, 6-13 July, 2022. 6 pages, 3 figure

Non-uniqueness of the Quasinormal Mode Expansion of Electromagnetic Lorentz Dispersive Materials

Any optical structure possesses resonance modes and its response to an excitation can be decomposed onto the quasinormal and numerical modes of discretized Maxwell's operator. In this paper, we consider a dielectric permittivity that is a N-pole Lorentz function of the pulsation ω\omega. We propose a common formalism and obtain different formulas for the modal expansion. The non-uniqueness of the excitation coeffcient is due to a choice of the linearization of Maxwell's equation with respect to ω\omega and of the form of the source term. We make the link between the numerical discrete modal expansion and analytical formulas that can be found in the literature. We detail the formulation of dispersive Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) in order to keep a linear eigenvalue problem. We also give an algorithm to regain an orthogonal basis for degenerate modes. Numerical results validate the different formulas and compare their accuracy.Comment: 11 figures, 21 page

Study of capillary interaction between two grains: a new experimental device with suction control

    Get PDF
International audienceWe investigated the behavior of a water liquid bridge formed between two grains. We mainly focused on tensile tests with suction control (capillary pressure). Theoretical and experimental studies are compared. A new experimental device involving suction control of the liquid bridge was developed specifically for this kind of test. Most of the liquid bridge variables and characteristics were measured by image analysis (gorge radius, volume, contact angles, filling angles). Capillary force was measured by differential weighting. Experimental conditions allows us to avoid viscous effects. Our experimental results were close to Young- Laplace equation solutions. The "gorge method", commonly used for calculating the capillary force, was also validated by our experiments. Liquid bridge rupture was studied and a new rupture criterion is proposed. This criterion depends on the grain radius, contact angle, surface tension and suction and was in agreement with the experimental results

Amélioration du développement modal des champs électromagnétiques par une méthode d’interpolation

We consider optical structures where the dielectric permittivity is described as a rational function of the pulsation ω (Lorentz model). The electromagnetic fields can be computed on a large number of frequencies by computing the eigenmodes of the optical device and reconstructing the solution by expanding it on these eigenmodes. This modal expansion suffers from numerous limitations that are detailed in this report. In order to overcome these limitations, an interpolation procedure is proposed such that the direct computation of the electric field is needed only for a small number of interpolation points. Numerical experiments in 2-D and 3-D exhibit the efficiency of this approach.

Prolonged Complete Response after GEMOX Chemotherapy in a Patient with Advanced Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The only currently validated treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is sorafenib. However, sorafenib has been mainly studied in patients with HCC developed in cirrhotic liver. Chemotherapy might be more suitable for patients with HCC in non-cirrhotic liver. We report the case of a young woman with fibrolamellar HCC in a non-cirrhotic liver, with histologically proven metastatic ganglionary relapse after surgical resection of the primary tumour. Chemotherapy with gemcitabine and oxaliplatin (GEMOX regimen) achieved a complete response without relapse five years after discontinuation of chemotherapy. This exceptional case raises the question of clinical trials specifically designed for patients with HCC in non-cirrhotic liver

Risk factors for sporadic campylobacteriosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Campylobacter spp. is an important causative agent of diarrheal illness worldwide. The disease is frequently associated with foodborne transmission, but other routes of exposure are increasingly recognized. A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies were performed to determine the main risk factors associated with sporadic campylobacteriosis. Suitable scientific articles published up to March 2017 were identified through a systematic literature search and subject to methodological quality assessment. From each study, odds ratios (OR) as measures of association were extracted or calculated, as well as study characteristics such as study population, design, type of model used and risk factor categorization. Mixed-effects meta-analytical models were adjusted by population type to appropriate data partitions. From 4453 identified references, the quality assessment stage was passed by 71 case-control studies focusing on sporadic campylobacteriosis. The eligible studies were conducted between 1981 and 2012 and provided 1336 ORs for meta-analysis. The meta-analysis identified international travel (pooled OR=4.626), recent use of gastric antacids (pooled OR=2.911), occupational exposure to animals/carcasses (pooled OR=3.022), and food consumption (in particular raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, beef, and dairy) as the main risks factors for sporadic campylobacteriosis in the mixed population. In the child population, the main risk factors concerned environmental/animal transmission routes (e.g. drinking untreated water (pooled OR=3.261), exposure to recreational water (pooled OR=3.156), exposure to farm/rural environment (pooled OR=3.128), contact with farm animals (pooled OR=2.747), person-to-person transmission (pooled OR=2.736) and consumption of raw milk (pooled OR =2.603). The results of this meta-analysis highlight the importance of overlooked routes and vehicles of transmission (environment, animal contact, and other food vehicles) of Campylobacter that should be explored in dedicated studies. The authors would like to thank Anses staff and the members of the Anses Working Group on Source Attribution of Foodborne Diseases: Moez Sanaa, Laurence Watier, Jean Christophe Augustin, Frédéric Carlin, Laurent Guillier, Nathalie Jourdan-Da Silva, Alexandre Leclercq, Anne Thébault, Nicole Pavio, Isabelle Villena. The evaluation of new computing languages for a large community, like HEP, involves comparison of many aspects of the languages’ behaviour, ecosystem and interactions with other languages. In this paper we compare a number of languages using a common, yet non-trivial, HEP algorithm: the anti- kT clustering algorithm used for jet finding. We compare specifically the algorithm implemented in Python (pure Python and accelerated with numpy and numba), and Julia, with respect to the reference implementation in C++, from Fastjet. As well as the speed of the implementation we describe the ergonomics of the language for the coder, as well as the efforts required to achieve the best performance, which can directly impact on code readability and sustainability
