    Impurity in a granular gas under nonlinear Couette flow

    We study in this work the transport properties of an impurity immersed in a granular gas under stationary nonlinear Couette flow. The starting point is a kinetic model for low-density granular mixtures recently proposed by the authors [Vega Reyes F et al. 2007 Phys. Rev. E 75 061306]. Two routes have been considered. First, a hydrodynamic or normal solution is found by exploiting a formal mapping between the kinetic equations for the gas particles and for the impurity. We show that the transport properties of the impurity are characterized by the ratio between the temperatures of the impurity and gas particles and by five generalized transport coefficients: three related to the momentum flux (a nonlinear shear viscosity and two normal stress differences) and two related to the heat flux (a nonlinear thermal conductivity and a cross coefficient measuring a component of the heat flux orthogonal to the thermal gradient). Second, by means of a Monte Carlo simulation method we numerically solve the kinetic equations and show that our hydrodynamic solution is valid in the bulk of the fluid when realistic boundary conditions are used. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic solution applies to arbitrarily (inside the continuum regime) large values of the shear rate, of the inelasticity, and of the rest of parameters of the system. Preliminary simulation results of the true Boltzmann description show the reliability of the nonlinear hydrodynamic solution of the kinetic model.     Combined Relativistic and static analysis for all Delta B=2 operators

    We analyse matrix elements of Delta B=2 operators by combining QCD results with the ones obtained in the static limit of HQET. The matching of all the QCD operators to HQET is made at NLO order. To do that we have to include the anomalous dimension matrix up to two loops, both in QCD and HQET, and the one loop matching for all the Delta B=2 operators. The matrix elements of these operators are relevant for the prediction of the B-\bar B mixing, B_s meson width difference and supersymmetric effects in Delta B=2 transitions.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure.     Bose-Einstein condensation in antiferromagnets close to the saturation field

    At zero temperature and strong applied magnetic fields the ground sate of an anisotropic antiferromagnet is a saturated paramagnet with fully aligned spins. We study the quantum phase transition as the field is reduced below an upper critical Hc2H_{c2} and the system enters a XY-antiferromagnetic phase. Using a bond operator representation we consider a model spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic with single-ion anisotropy in hyper-cubic lattices under strong magnetic fields. We show that the transition at Hc2H_{c2} can be interpreted as a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons. The theoretical results are used to analyze our magnetization versus field data in the organic compound NiCl2NiCl_2-4SC(NH2)24SC(NH_2)_2 (DTN) at very low temperatures. This is the ideal BEC system to study this transition since Hc2H_{c2} is sufficiently low to be reached with static magnetic fields (as opposed to pulsed fields). The scaling of the magnetization as a function of field and temperature close to Hc2H_{c2} shows excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. It allows to obtain the quantum critical exponents and confirm the BEC nature of the transition at Hc2H_{c2}.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in PRB

    The converse problem for the multipotentialisation of evolution equations and systems

    We propose a method to identify and classify evolution equations and systems that can be multipotentialised in given target equations or target systems. We refer to this as the {\it converse problem}. Although we mainly study a method for (1+1)(1+1)-dimensional equations/system, we do also propose an extension of the methodology to higher-dimensional evolution equations. An important point is that the proposed converse method allows one to identify certain types of auto-B\"acklund transformations for the equations/systems. In this respect we define the {\it triangular-auto-B\"acklund transformation} and derive its connections to the converse problem. Several explicit examples are given.     Distinct high-T transitions in underdoped Ba1x_{1-x}Kx_{x}Fe2_{2}As2_{2}

    In contrast to the simultaneous structural and magnetic first order phase transition T0T_{0} previously reported, our detailed investigation on an underdoped Ba0.84_{0.84}K0.16_{0.16}Fe2_{2}As2_{2} single crystal unambiguously revealed that the transitions are not concomitant. The tetragonal (τ\tau: I4/mmm) - orthorhombic (ϑ\vartheta: Fmmm) structural transition occurs at TST_{S}\simeq 110 K, followed by an adjacent antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at TNT_{N}\simeq 102 K. Hysteresis and coexistence of the τ\tau and ϑ\vartheta phases over a finite temperature range observed in our NMR experiments confirm the first order character of the structural transition and provide evidence that both TST_{S} and TNT_{N} are strongly correlated. Our data also show that superconductivity (SC) develops in the ϑ\vartheta phase below TcT_{c} = 20 K and coexists with long range AFM. This new observation, TSTNT_{S}\neq T_{N}, firmly establishes another similarity between the hole-doped BaFe2_{2}As2_{2} via K substitution and the electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
