    Mechanical modulation of single-electron tunneling through molecular-assembled metallic nanoparticles

    We present a microscopic study of single-electron tunneling in nanomechanical double-barrier tunneling junctions formed using a vibrating scanning nanoprobe and a metallic nanoparticle connected to a metallic substrate through a molecular bridge. We analyze the motion of single electrons on and off the nanoparticle through the tunneling current, the displacement current and the charging-induced electrostatic force on the vibrating nanoprobe. We demonstrate the mechanical single-electron turnstile effect by applying the theory to a gold nanoparticle connected to the gold substrate through alkane dithiol molecular bridge and probed by a vibrating platinum tip.Comment: Accepted by Phys.     GRB970228 and the class of GRBs with an initial spikelike emission: do they follow the Amati relation?

    On the basis of the recent understanding of GRB050315 and GRB060218, we return to GRB970228, the first Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) with detected afterglow. We proposed it as the prototype for a new class of GRBs with "an occasional softer extended emission lasting tenths of seconds after an initial spikelike emission". Detailed theoretical computation of the GRB970228 light curves in selected energy bands for the prompt emission are presented and compared with observational BeppoSAX data. From our analysis we conclude that GRB970228 and likely the ones of the above mentioned new class of GRBs are "canonical GRBs" have only one peculiarity: they exploded in a galactic environment, possibly the halo, with a very low value of CBM density. Here we investigate how GRB970228 unveils another peculiarity of this class of GRBs: they do not fulfill the "Amati relation".     First-principles study of native point defects in Bi2Se3

    Using first-principles method within the framework of the density functional theory, we study the influence of native point defect on the structural and electronic properties of Bi2_2Se3_3. Se vacancy in Bi2_2Se3_3 is a double donor, and Bi vacancy is a triple acceptor. Se antisite (SeBi_{Bi}) is always an active donor in the system because its donor level (ε\varepsilon(+1/0)) enters into the conduction band. Interestingly, Bi antisite(BiSe1_{Se1}) in Bi2_2Se3_3 is an amphoteric dopant, acting as a donor when μ\mue_e<<0.119eV (the material is typical p-type) and as an acceptor when μ\mue_e>>0.251eV (the material is typical n-type). The formation energies under different growth environments (such as Bi-rich or Se-rich) indicate that under Se-rich condition, SeBi_{Bi} is the most stable native defect independent of electron chemical potential μ\mue_e. Under Bi-rich condition, Se vacancy is the most stable native defect except for under the growth window as μ\mue_e>>0.262eV (the material is typical n-type) and Δ\Deltaμ\muSe_{Se}<<-0.459eV(Bi-rich), under such growth windows one negative charged BiSe1_{Se1} is the most stable one.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Bogoliubov Hamiltonian as Derivative of Dirac Hamiltonian via Braid Relation

    In this paper we discuss a new type of 4-dimensional representation of the braid group. The matrices of braid operations are constructed by q-deformation of Hamiltonians. One is the Dirac Hamiltonian for free electron with mass m, the other, which we find, is related to the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian for quasiparticles in 3^3He-B with the same free energy and mass being m/2. In the process, we choose the free q-deformation parameter as a special value in order to be consistent with the anyon description for fractional quantum Hall effect with ν=1/2\nu = 1/2.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

    Nonclassical photon pairs generated from a room-temperature atomic ensemble

    We report experimental generation of non-classically correlated photon pairs from collective emission in a room-temperature atomic vapor cell. The nonclassical feature of the emission is demonstrated by observing a violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Each pair of correlated photons are separated by a controllable time delay up to 2 microseconds. This experiment demonstrates an important step towards the realization of the Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller scheme for scalable long-distance quantum communication.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Improved Approximation Algorithms for Computing k Disjoint Paths Subject to Two Constraints

    For a given graph GG with positive integral cost and delay on edges, distinct vertices ss and tt, cost bound CZ+C\in Z^{+} and delay bound DZ+D\in Z^{+}, the kk bi-constraint path (kkBCP) problem is to compute kk disjoint stst-paths subject to CC and DD. This problem is known NP-hard, even when k=1k=1 \cite{garey1979computers}. This paper first gives a simple approximation algorithm with factor-(2,2)(2,2), i.e. the algorithm computes a solution with delay and cost bounded by 2D2*D and 2C2*C respectively. Later, a novel improved approximation algorithm with ratio (1+β,max{2,1+ln1β})(1+\beta,\,\max\{2,\,1+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}\}) is developed by constructing interesting auxiliary graphs and employing the cycle cancellation method. As a consequence, we can obtain a factor-(1.369,2)(1.369,\,2) approximation algorithm by setting 1+ln1β=21+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}=2 and a factor-(1.567,1.567)(1.567,\,1.567) algorithm by setting 1+β=1+ln1β1+\beta=1+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}. Besides, by setting β=0\beta=0, an approximation algorithm with ratio (1,O(lnn))(1,\, O(\ln n)), i.e. an algorithm with only a single factor ratio O(lnn)O(\ln n) on cost, can be immediately obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial approximation algorithm for the kkBCP problem that strictly obeys the delay constraint.Comment: 12 page
