    We report measurements of the state of wetting of two liquid mixtures at coexistence near their respective critical consolute temperatures. Borosilicate glass capillary tubes were reacted with hexamethyldisilazane to produce substrates of uniform and controlled silylation. Surfaces of low coverage exhibit a series of first-order partial to complete wetting transitions and obey a short-range force scaling relation. Surfaces of high coverage yield surprising results which may be understood as a consequence of long-range forces

    The wetting layer formed by a phase-separated binary liquid mixture in contact with a glass substrate is observed to have a large nonequilibrium response in thickness to small temperature perturbations. An independent theoretical and physical picture is developed, which also provides a direct means of measuring the forces responsible for wetting and their effect on the dynamics of diffusion-limited interfacial motion.     Capillary Behavior of Binary Liquid Mixtures Near Criticality: Rise and Kinetics

    In three different phase-separated binary liquid mixtures we have observed stationary capillary rises in which the meniscus curvature is inconsistent with the sign of the rise. This ‘‘inverted-meniscus’’ configuration occurs within approximately 50 mK of the mixture’s critical temperature and shows no sign of decay after much longer than the characteristic time for relaxation. We also report experiments showing that perturbation of the wetting layer inside the capillary tube can dramatically affect the capillary rise. This motivates three scenarios in which the behavior of the wetting layer foils an equilibrium capillary rise measurement of the contact angle and produces an inverted meniscus

    p32 is a novel mammalian Lgl binding protein that enhances the activity of protein kinase Cζ and regulates cell polarity

    Lgl (lethal giant larvae) plays an important role in cell polarity. Atypical protein kinase C (aPKC) binds to and phosphorylates Lgl, and the phosphorylation negatively regulates Lgl activity. In this study, we identify p32 as a novel Lgl binding protein that directly binds to a domain on mammalian Lgl2 (mLgl2), which contains the aPKC phosphorylation site. p32 also binds to PKCζ, and the three proteins form a transient ternary complex. When p32 is bound, PKCζ is stimulated to phosphorylate mLgl2 more efficiently. p32 overexpression in Madin–Darby canine kidney cells cultured in a 3D matrix induces an expansion of the actin-enriched apical membrane domain and disrupts cell polarity. Addition of PKCζ inhibitor blocks apical actin accumulation, which is rescued by p32 overexpression. p32 knockdown by short hairpin RNA also induces cell polarity defects. Collectively, our data indicate that p32 is a novel regulator of cell polarity that forms a complex with mLgl2 and aPKC and enhances aPKC activity

    The influence of social phobia in first episode of psychosis and attentional processing and the ability to use theory of mind

    Chapter One: Literature Review This chapter reviews the research surrounding the prevalence of comorbid social phobia in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. It then critically evaluates the eight studies that have specifically explored the relationships, if any, between social phobia and psychotic symptoms. The review surmises that the research findings are inconsistent, which seem to be attributable to methodological differences between all the studies in terms of participant selection, chronicity of psychotic symptoms and lack of consistent measures. Chapter Two: Research Report This study investigates attentional processing, the influence of social phobia and the ability to use Theory of Mind (ToM: the ability to infer other people's mental states and behaviour) in people diagnosed with their first episode of psychosis, when compared to healthy matched controls. The results showed that the first episode group attended towards negative evaluation, somatic sensations, physical threat, but not social situation word groups. Social phobia was highly prevalent in the first episode of psychosis cohort (37%) and this anxiety disorder was unrelated to psychotic symptoms. ToM processing was impaired in the first episode group. ToM was not related to social phobia symptoms, but was related to social functioning.     Extracting the spectral signature of alpha-clustering in 44,48,52Ti using the continuous wavelet transform

    A novel technique has been developed, making use of the continuous wavelet transform to identify α-clustered states from resonant scattering measurements in regions of high nuclear state density. This technique expedites the investigation of α-clustering in medium mass and heavy nuclei, where the role that α-clustering plays in the structure of the nucleus is poorly understood. Here we report the application of this technique to measurements of the 4He(40,44,48Ca,α) resonant reactions, leading to an assessment of the α-cluster structure of 44,48,52Ti. Alpha-clustering was identified in 44Ti and 52Ti, but was observed to break down in 48Ti. The implications of these results are discussed
