Natural Law: Practical Reason and Creative Information
Leaving unstated it’s probably many connections with Chinese traditional cultures, it [this paper] seeks to articulate some main theses of the tradition that, owing as much (if not more) to Hebrew prophets as to Greek philosophers, is foundational for a critical appropriation and defence of authentic human rights. Leaving many important human rights unstated, it tries to identify the rational foundations for them all, in nine theses.
absolutos.
Forcing boundary-layer transition on an inverted airfoil in ground effect and at varying incidence
Presented at 34th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics ConferenceThe influence of the laminar boundary-layer state on a wing operating in ground effect at Re = 6 × 10 has been investigated using experiments with a model that provides two-dimensional flow and computations with a panel-method code. The effect of a boundary-layer trip placed at varying distances from the leading edge was observed at various incidences in terms of on-surface characteristics, including pressure measurements, flow visualisation and hot-film anemometry, and off-surface characteristics with LDA surveys below and behind the wing. The act of forcing transition led to downforce being reduced and drag increased, moreover, it altered almost all aspects of the wing’s aerodynamic characteristics, with the effect becoming greater as the trip was placed closer to the leading edge. These aspects include the replacement of a laminar separation bubble with trailing-edge separation, a thicker boundary layer, and a thicker wake with greater velocity deficit. The importance of considering laminar phenomena for wings operating in ground effect has been show
Freezing of Simple Liquid Metals
Freezing of simple liquid metals and the relative stabilities of competing
crystalline solids are investigated using thermodynamic perturbation theory,
the interactions between ions being modeled by effective pair potentials
derived from pseudopotential theory. The ionic free energy of the solid phase
is calculated, to first order in the perturbation potential, using classical
density-functional theory and an accurate approximation to the hard-sphere
radial distribution function. Free energy calculations for Na, Mg, and Al yield
well-defined freezing transitions and structural free energy differences for
bcc, fcc, and hcp crystals in qualitative agreement with experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX with elsart.st
Magnetic tight-binding and the iron-chromium enthalpy anomaly
We describe a self consistent magnetic tight-binding theory based in an
expansion of the Hohenberg-Kohn density functional to second order, about a non
spin polarised reference density. We show how a first order expansion about a
density having a trial input magnetic moment leads to the Stoner--Slater rigid
band model. We employ a simple set of tight-binding parameters that accurately
describes electronic structure and energetics, and show these to be
transferable between first row transition metals and their alloys. We make a
number of calculations of the electronic structure of dilute Cr impurities in
Fe which we compare with results using the local spin density approximation.
The rigid band model provides a powerful means for interpreting complex
magnetic configurations in alloys; using this approach we are able to advance a
simple and readily understood explanation for the observed anomaly in the
enthalpy of mixing.Comment: Submitted to Phys Rev
