Purpose: The aim of this paper is the use of the “drop of honey effect” to explain the spread of Covid-19. Approach/Methodology/Design: After Covid-19 appearance in Wuhan, in the Chinese province of Hubei, by December, 2019, it spread all over the world. The World Health Organization declared it as pandemic in March 11, 2020. The infection is highly contagious and made thousands of deaths around the world. Timely decisions are key for the control of the dissemination. The “drop of honey effect” results as an important framework to explain the Covid-19 spread. Findings: An opportune decision in a very initial moment could have made all the difference in the virus spread. Practical Implications: The study will contribute positively for the understanding of the importance of well-timed decisions for governments, world organizations, academia, companies and people, each one on a different dimension’s level. Originality/Value: This study presents the “drop of honey effect” as an original and very suitable framework to explain the way how the virus spread all over the world after the virus in Wuhan began to infect people.peer-reviewe

The situation of buildings degradation is very severe in many cities in the world. The case of a degraded building is studied in this article. The building becomes ruined because owners do not agree about what to do with the building and no one can use it without the consent of the others. Besides, time makes the building become with a lower value. After a long period of degradation, the question “what doing now?” is posed. Considering the situation of many degraded buildings, the present study aims to analyze a possible cause and work a situation of anti-commons concerning a building owned by several holders having each one exclusion rights. We use SWOT Analysis to build strategies for this anti-commons’ real estate case. Then Fuzzy DEMATEL model is applied to understand the relations between strategies for a final decision. Conclusions allow understanding the relations between strategies and how they influence each other to get a final decision for this problem. For our case, we recommend a concrete strategy to the owners after evaluating the preferences of the decision makers.peer-reviewe

The model of economic analysis used on the market by companies has shown too much inability to the explanation of problems arising from the economic man’s decision. So that alternative theories have been developed by a conventional series of renowned scientists and institutions. The need of an alternative has generated several different approaches. It is the case of the analysis of behavioral economics, represented in this study by neuromarketing. Theoretical view in the study of the anchoring effect of prices in the consumer's mind is presented. This study evidences the existence of the anchoring effect of prices in consumer decision of students from business courses of the city of Belém – PA (Brazil).peer-reviewe

This papers shows a case study on the implementation of a financial management system related to IT service in a small enterprise whose core business is not IT related. Process models (ITIL is the nost popular) describe "what to do" but not "how to do". Moreover, small non IT enterprises do not the value of IT services provided by their providers the value of the assets underlying the provisioning of those services, and the quallification of operational forecasting. Introducing Financial Management is the Key to connect the business and IT, and in this way, getting opeational visibility, and insight and superior decision making. A case study is presented describing the first steps given in order to introduce IT cost services management, enhancing decision making and obtaining operational control

Game theory and trade tensions between advanced economies

Purpose: This article aims to study trade tensions between advanced economies and to express the difference between “currency war” and “trade war” and the respective effects on the global economy‎. Design/Methodology/Approach: The analysis of trade relations between countries is always one of the main concerns of policymakers and economists‎. ‎In this paper‎, ‎interactions Dollar-Yuan‎, ‎Yuan-Euro and Dollar-Euro are modeled using game theory, being the effect of protectionism and currency devaluation in trade tensions studied by introducing a new game defined as threat game‎. Findings: Our findings show that protectionism and negotiation strategy is a credible deterrent threat and can be a brake for a total currency war‎. Also, we use the concept of rational choice to demonstrate that, for advanced economies, the cooperation strategy is the best way to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Practical Implications: The subject discussed in the paper refers to issues related to protectionism, currency war and negotiation. The holistic perspective that is applied in this study includes the expression of a dominant strategy in trade relations between countries that helps to prevent the competitive devaluation of money. The consequences of the currency war have been catastrophic for the global economy and have ultimately led to a global depression. It also outlines ways to converge in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic. Originality/Value: This paper focuses on the prospects for trade relations between advanced economies such as the United States, Europe and China. As a result, the perspective proposed allows us to make a significant and innovative contribution to the literature because it can equip relevant stakeholders in the Global Economic System with the necessary strategies to make efficient decisions.peer-reviewe

Extinction revisited : “allee effect” and irreversibility in “schooling” fisheries

    Get PDF
Important results of Colin Clark’s research in the 70s are used again in the discussion of the limits to the privatization of the fisheries. Those results highlighted the possibility of species extinction motivated by special forms of the natural growth function. This paper revisits the situation in which the growth function exhibits a non-feedback, or depensation, curve. The existence of non-shrinkage curves poses problems in determining the sustainable yield and has important implications for resource management. The so-called "Allee Effect" may explain the difficulties of recovery of certain stocks, even when there are a set of limitations to the fishing effort. Ultimately, it explains the extinction of some species: if we face a situation of non-critical feedback, an effect of irreversibility is introduced. These effects are considered in the schooling species fisheries case.peer-reviewe

Ferrugem da folha sobre genótipos de aveia com diferentes níveis de resistência : danos e perdas

The evolution in virulence of Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae has challenged the genetic resistance to crown rust in oat genotypes. New resistance sources are constantly required for yield stabilization and costs reduction. This study aimed to characterize the crown rust resistance of oat genotypes and the disease´s productive and economic impact. Experiments were conducted in two environments, with and without chemical control. Resistance was measured by disease progress, apparent rate of infection, final severity and pustule size. Damages were based on reduction of yield, 1000 grain mass and hectoliter mass. UFRGS16Q6030-2 was immune. In both environments, UFRGS166091-2 and URS Brava exhibited the greatest level of resistance and the smallest grain yield reduction, while URS 22 was highly susceptible, reducing more than 70% of its grain yield. These results surpass the negative impacts of the disease previously reported in oats, particularly related to grain yield. The data presented in this paper highlighted the importance of genetic resistance, particularly partial resistance, for maintaining oat genetic yield potential, reducing environmental contamination with less fungicides, and increasing economic gains with oat cultivation.

Measurement of the cross section for the production of a WW boson in association with bb^- jets in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A measurement is presented of the cross section for the production of a W boson with one or two jets, of which at least one must be a b-jet, in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Production via top decay is not included in the signal definition. The measurement is based on 35 pb^-1 of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The W+b-jet cross section is defined for jets reconstructed with the anti-kt clustering algorithm with transverse momentum above 25 GeV and rapidity within +/-2.1. The b-jets are identified by reconstructing secondary vertices. The fiducial cross section is measured both for the electron and muon decay channel of the W boson and is found to be 10.2 +/- 1.9 (stat) +/- 2.6 (syst) pb for one lepton flavour. The results are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations, which predict a cross section smaller than, though consistent with, the measured value.Peer Reviewe
