The Mastery of Space in Early Modern Political Thought Giovanni Botero, the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican and the fusion of the civitas and urbs in sixteenth-century Italy

Before the sixteenth century there was a strong emphasis in Renaissance political thought on the difference between the political city (the civitas) and the physical city (the urbs). The body politic ‘floated’ above the landscape—it was not rooted in a specific territory as we understand states to be today. In 1588 the philosopher-priest Giovanni Botero argued that wealth underpinned political power; challenging humanist narratives about the corrupting forces of wealth for the civitas. These narratives were rooted in a classical ‘politics’, which saw the civitas as a morally oriented body. Botero conceived his arguments in the context of ‘reason of state’, where politics became the art of maintaining one’s ‘stato’. While arguing that wealth was the source of civitas’ power he grounded it in the economic capacity of the urbs. Physical space became an object of political power. I argue in this thesis that the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican was a potent visual exposition of these ideas—ideas which had important implications for the rise of the territorial mercantilist ‘state’

Rheological Behavior and Manufacturing Simulation of Prepreg Platelet Molding Systems

Molding systems formed by cutting and slitting prepreg composite tape into the form of platelets have been shown to be beneficial in producing parts with moderate performance with moderate processing characteristics. However, the platelets forming the molding system are typically quite large compared to typical part thicknesses. Therefore, a challenge of scales exists in platelet molding systems that is absent in traditionally considered well dispersed fiber molding systems used in injection molding. In this dissertation, we consider the specific problem of determining the final orientation state of parts manufactured in compression molding from platelet molding systems along with identifying parameters which affect ease of processing. A multi-scale approach is taken addressing necessary descriptors of platelet orientation state, evolution relationships for platelet orientations, constitutive model forms along with anisotropic viscosity predictions, and finite element based implementations to analyze complex problems. The major result is then a holistic modeling approach applied to a pin bracket geometry which is then validated versus experimental measurements

The Power to Envision Change: Art as Environmental Activism

How do visual and narrative-based approaches to communicating environmental messages inspire action and further awareness? This thesis investigates three artists whose work tells environmental stories in various ways: activists from the Beehive Design Collective, photographer Chris Jordan, and activist/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph. These artists produce challenging, engaging, emotionally vital art that allows urgent environmental messages to sink in to peoples’ minds and hearts in a different way than scientific information. At this time when our planet is in ever-increasing environmental danger and the need for action becomes ever greater, how we perceive our relation to the issues facing us will determine how we attempt to solve them. Art has rich potential to provide an entry point to emotion, creativity and community, and thereby to help people grapple with overwhelming environmental issues in an empowered and visionary way

A general protocol for conversion of a tetrasubstituted alkene to a highly methylated hydrocarbon is tested with a concise synthesis of the natural product, herbertene. The conversion: alkene --\u3e 1,2-diol --\u3e 1,2-dimethylated hydrocarbon should find application in a number of synthesis designs
