Is “Unconsummated Marriage” still an appropriate term? A snapshot of reality
The most shared definition of Unconsummated Marriage (UM) refers to “the failure to perform successful sexual intercourse at the beginning of
the marriage. UM usually occurs in the first few nights of marriage and so it is frequently referred to as “honeymoon impotence” or “wedding night
impotence”. In the Middle-Eastern (MES) and Western (WS) societies, sexuality follows different patterns in terms of meaning and rules. Moreover
the evolution of societies all around the world created new contexts and kinds of relationship. This could hamper a correct taxonomy of such sexual
dysfunction where a social variable seems crucial.
Aim: To analyze and review data on UM all around the world, to understand if in different societies it refers to the same situation.
Method: A review of published literature on UM from 1970 to date, was conducted.
Results: Substantial difference emerged from MES to WS. In MES, sexuality is allowable only in marriage, while in WS sexuality and relationship are
not strongly linked. This could suggest that the term “marriage” is unable to cover the phenomenon in such different countries. Moreover, the average
time before the consultation, causal attribution and prevalence are very different in Western and Middle Eastern countries.
Conclusion: We found that the term “first attempts dysfunction” could be better used to describe male, female or both difficulties related to
ignorance about sexuality or state/performance anxiety. On the other hand over the individual category of sexual dysfunctions, we suggest a new term
as “Unconsummated relationship”, where individual difficulties toward sexuality are involved creating a couple’s dysfunction.

Safety and efficacy of short-term intrapulmonary percussive ventilation in patients with bronchiectasis
Background. Treatment of bronchiectasis includes drugs, oxygen therapy and bronchial clearance maneuvers. The aim of the current study was to assess safety and efficacy of IntrapulmonaryPercussive Ventilation when compared with usual Chest Physical Therapy in patients with bronchiectasis Methods. In two consecutive days, 22 patients underwent both Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation and Chest Physical Therapy following a randomized cross-over design. At inclusion (T0), at the end of 30-min session (T1), and after 30 min (T2) and 4 hrs (T3), side effects, heart rate, oxygen saturation rate, respiratory rate, sensation of phlegm encumbrance and dyspneameasured by visual analogue scales, were recorded. At T1, discomfort measured by visual analogue scales was also recorded. At T3, we evaluated efficacy in terms of volume (ml), and wet and dry weight (g) of sputum. Results. Side effects were not so severe as to determine study discontinuation and were similar (27%) between the two treatments. Heart rate (p<.001) and respiratory rate (p=0.047) decreased over time while sensation of phlegm encumbrance improved (p=0.026) withboth treatments. Only Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation improved (p=0.004) sensation of dyspnea and resulted more comfortable than Chest Physical Therapy (p=0.032). The two treatments caused important phlegm production without differences in total volume, and both wet and dry weight. Conclusions. In patients with bronchiectasis and productive cough, short-term application of Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation is similarly safe and effective than traditional chestPhysical Therapy with less discomfort. Further studies on cost-effectiveness of using IPV is recommended
Electronic Structure of CeFeAsO1-xFx (x=0, 0.11/x=0.12) compounds
We report an extensive study on the intrinsic bulk electronic structure of
the high-temperature superconductor CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 and its parent compound
CeFeAsO by soft and hard x-ray photoemission, x-ray absorption and soft-x-ray
emission spectroscopies. The complementary surface/bulk probing depth, and the
elemental and chemical sensitivity of these techniques allows resolving the
intrinsic electronic structure of each element and correlating it with the
local structure, which has been probed by extended-x-ray absorption fine
structure spectroscopy. The measurements indicate a predominant 4f1 (i.e. Ce3+)
initial state configuration for Cerium and an effective valence-band-to-4f
charge-transfer screening of the core hole. The spectra also reveal the
presence of a small Ce f0 initial state configuration, which we assign to the
occurrence of an intermediate valence state. The data reveal a reasonably good
agreement with the partial density of states as obtained in standard density
functional calculations over a large energy range. Implications for the
electronic structure of these materials are discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Prenatal coparenting alliance and marital satisfaction when pregnancy occurs after assisted reproductive technologies or spontaneously
Although the coparenting relationship has been described as key in family dynamics, very few studies have assessed its development during pregnancy after assisted reproductive technology (ART). In this study, the authors compared the prenatal coparenting relationship in 33 couples who conceived through ART with that of 49 couples who conceived spontaneously, and assessed the association between marital satisfaction and the prenatal coparenting alliance. The first-time parents were met during the second trimester of pregnancy. A validated observational task (the Prenatal Lausanne Trilogue Play) was used to assess their prenatal coparenting relationship, and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale was used to evaluate marital satisfaction. No differences were observed in the two groups’ global prenatal coparenting scores, but the ART couples showed less coparental playfulness than those who conceived spontaneously. Marital satisfaction was higher in women who conceived through ART. These data suggest that infertility and its treatment affect the prenatal coparenting and marital relationships in different ways
A Giant Crater on 90 Antiope?
Mutual event observations between the two components of 90 Antiope were
carried out in 2007-2008. The pole position was refined to lambda0 =
199.5+/-0.5 eg and beta0 = 39.8+/-5 deg in J2000 ecliptic coordinates, leaving
intact the physical solution for the components, assimilated to two perfect
Roche ellipsoids, and derived after the 2005 mutual event season (Descamps et
al., 2007). Furthermore, a large-scale geological depression, located on one of
the components, was introduced to better match the observed lightcurves. This
vast geological feature of about 68 km in diameter, which could be postulated
as a bowl-shaped impact crater, is indeed responsible of the photometric
asymmetries seen on the "shoulders" of the lightcurves. The bulk density was
then recomputed to 1.28+/-0.04 gcm-3 to take into account this large-scale
non-convexity. This giant crater could be the aftermath of a tremendous
collision of a 100-km sized proto-Antiope with another Themis family member.
This statement is supported by the fact that Antiope is sufficiently porous
(~50%) to survive such an impact without being wholly destroyed. This violent
shock would have then imparted enough angular momentum for fissioning of
proto-Antiope into two equisized bodies. We calculated that the impactor must
have a diameter greater than ~17 km, for an impact velocity ranging between 1
and 4 km/s. With such a projectile, this event has a substantial 50%
probability to have occurred over the age of the Themis family.Comment: 30 pages, 3 Tables, 8 Figures. Accepted for publication in Icaru
Orbital occupancies and the putative jeff = 1/2 groundstate in Ba2IrO4: a combined oxygen K edge XAS and RIXS study
The nature of the electronic groundstate of Ba2IrO4 has been addressed using
soft X-ray absorption and inelastic scattering techniques in the vicinity of
the oxygen K edge. From the polarization and angular dependence of XAS we
deduce an approximately equal superposition of xy, yz and zx Ir4+ 5d orbitals.
By combining the measured orbital occupancies, with the value of the spin-orbit
coupling provided by RIXS, we estimate the crystal field splitting associated
with the tetragonal distortion of the IrO6 octahedra to be small, \Delta=50(50)
meV. We thus conclude definitively that Ba2IrO4 is a close realization of a
spin-orbit Mott insulator with a jeff = 1/2 groundstate, thereby overcoming
ambiguities in this assignment associated with the interpretation of X-ray
resonant scattering experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Activation of melanocortin receptors MC1 and MC5 attenuates retinal damage in experimental diabetic retinopathy
We hypothesize that melanocortin receptors (MC) could activate tissue protective circuit in a model of streptozotocin- (STZ-)
induced diabetic retinopathy (DR) in mice. At 12–16 weeks after diabetes induction, fluorescein angiography (FAG) revealed an
approximate incidence of 80% microvascular changes, typical of DR, in the animals, without signs of vascular leakage. Occludin
progressively decreased in the retina of mice developing retinopathy. qPCR of murine retina revealed expression of two MC
receptors, Mc1r and Mc5r. The intravitreal injection (5 ᵰ7L) of the selective MC1 small molecule agonist BMS-470539 (33 ᵰ7mol)
and the MC5 peptidomimetic agonist PG-901 (7.32 nM) elicited significant protection with regular course and caliber of retinal vessels, as quantified at weeks 12 and 16 after diabetes induction. Mouse retina homogenate settings indicated an augmented release of IL-1ᵯc, IL-1ᵯd, IL-6, MIP-1ᵯc, MIP-2ᵯc, MIP-3ᵯc, and VEGF from diabetic compared to nondiabetic mice. Application of PG20N or AGRP and MC5 and MC1 antagonist, respectively, augmented the release of cytokines, while the agonists BMS-470539 and PG-901 almost restored normal pattern of these mediators back to nondiabetic values. Similar changes were quantified with respect to Ki-67 staining. Finally, application of MC3-MC4 agonist/antagonists resulted to be inactive with respect to all parameters under
