Thermal and mechanical stresses in thick spheres with an extended FGM model
In this study, an exact solution for the one-dimensional steady-state thermal and mechanical stresses in a hollow thick sphere made of functionally graded material with a new graded
model is presented. The temperature distribution is assumed to be a function of radius. The material properties are graded along the radial direction according to exponential functions of radial direction. The advantage of this model, compared to the other models (linear or power law models), is in satisfaction of the material boundary conditions for several types of material
variation profiles. Employing the model, the energy and Navier equations are solved using the generalized Bessel function and the Lagrange method. In addition, a method for solving the
governing equations in spherical coordinates is presented. The analytical solution of the heat conduction equation and the Navier equation lead to the temperature profile, radial displacement, radial stress, and hoop stress as a function of

Effect of pot size, planting date and genotype on minituber production of Marfona potato cultivar
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of pot size, planting date and type of genotype on mini-tuber production of Marfona potato cultivar (Solanum tuberosum L.) in greenhouse conditions.Four genotypes (M-129, M-128P, M-127P and M-124P) originated from virus free sprouts and a genotype of the same cultivar (Marfona) originated from apical meristem, in 3 sizes of pot and 3 planting datewere investigated. The results showed that using larger pots of 3-liter has no advantage and pots smaller than 2-liter is not suitable for mini-tuber production. Also, time of Nov 18 was the best of datefor planting of potato in studied conditions and delay in date of planting reduced the mini-tuber production. The reduction in number of mini-tubers and growing period was greater for the genotype M-129 compared with the other potato genotypes. Furthermore, higher numbers of mini-tubers were produced by the M-127P and M-124P genotypes and M-127P had the highest total weight of mini-tubers.However the number of mini-tubers per plant was higher for genotypes originated from meristem culture than genotypes obtained from sprouts. It seems that genotypes originated from potato sprouts are not as efficient as the apical meristem ones. On the other hand, later genotype showed more homogenous in growth rate and phenotype
Extra-hepatic fascioliasis with peritoneal malignancy tumor feature
Fascioliasis is a zoonose parasitic disease
caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica and is
widespread in most regions of the world. Ectopic fascioliasis
usually caused by juvenile Fasciola spp., but in
recent years a few cases of tissue-embedded ova have been
reported from different endemic areas. A 79-year-old Iranian
man resident in Eird-e-Mousa village from Ardabil
Province, north-west of Iran, complained with abdominal
pain, nausea, and intestinal obstruction symptoms referred
to Ardabil Fatemi hospital. In laparotomy multiple intestinal
masses with peritoneal seeding resembling of a
malignant lesion were seen. After appendectomy and peritoneal
mass biopsy with numerous intraperitoneal adenopathy,
paraffin embedded blocks were prepared from
each tissues. A blood sample was taken from the patient
5 months later for serological diagnosis. Histopathological
examination of sections showed fibrofatty stroma with
dense mixed inflammatory cells infiltration and fibrosis in
peritoneal masses. Large numbers of ova of Fasciola spp.
were noted with typical circumscribed granulomas. Despite
of anti-fasciola treatment, IHA test for detecting anti F.
hepatica antibodies was positive 5 months after surgery
with a titer of 1/128. Due to multiple clinical manifestation
of extra-hepatic fascioliasis, its differential diagnosis from
intraperitoneal tumors or other similar diseases should be
considered
Fibroblastic polyp of the colon: clinicopathological analysis of 10 cases with emphasis on its common association with serrated crypts
: To describe the clinical and pathological features of 10 further cases of fibroblastic polyps (FP), a recently described, distinctive type of colorectal mucosal polyp. Methods and results : The patients were seven women and three men with ages ranging from 44 to 63 years. The lesions ranged in size from 2 to 4 mm. Eight of the polyps were located in the sigmoid colon. Five cases were associated with hyperplastic polyps. Histologically, FP displayed bland, plump spindle cells with oval nuclei arranged as bundles parallel to the surface or as haphazardly orientated sheets with a focal periglandular or perivascular concentric arrangement. Eight polyps represented mixed fibroblastic/hyperplastic polyps as they contained serrated (hyperplastic) crypts. Immunohistochemically, all cases were positive for vimentin and negative for desmin, smooth-muscle actin, h-caldesmon, S100 protein, c-Kit, epithelial membrane antigen, cytokeratin AE1/3, CD34, CD68, COX-2, and factor XIIIa. Ultrastructural examination supported the fibroblastic nature of the tumour cells. Conclusions : FP is a distinctive type of benign mucosal colorectal polyp characterized by its distal location, small size, frequent association with hyperplastic polyps, distinct morphological appearance and typical immunonegativity for markers of specific differentiation. FP with serrated crypts (mixed fibroblastic/hyperplastic polyp) represents a frequent variant of this lesion. A three-experiment examination of iliotibial band strain characteristics during different conditions using musculoskeletal simulation.
PURPOSE: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a common chronic pathology mediated via excessive Iliotibial band (ITB) strain. The purpose using a three-experiment approach is to provide insight into the differences in strain between different athletic movements, the incidence of ITBS in females, the efficacy of different prophylactic modalities for ITBS and also the kinematic parameters associated with ITB strain.
METHODS: Experiment 1 examined male and female athletes performing run, 45° cut and one-legged hop movements, experiment 2 observed males and females, whilst running in five different orthotic conditions and experiment 3 examined males and females riding a cycle ergometer at 70, 80 and 90RPM whilst in prophylactic knee brace and no-brace conditions. In each experiment, kinematics were obtained using a motion capture system and ITB strain was measured using a musculoskeletal simulation approach.
RESULTS: In experiment 1 ITB strain was greater in the run (male=3.87% & female=4.37%; P<0.001) and cut (male=3.12% & female=4.06%; P<0.001) movements compared to hop (male=0.87% & female=1.54%). Experiment 2 showed that females exhibited increased ITB strain (male=6.34% & female=8.91%; P<0.05) and ITB strain velocity (male=57.17%/s & female=77.41%/s; P<0.05) and also in females that ITB strain velocity was greater (P≤0.01) in lateral (80.22%/s) and no-orthotic (83.01%/s) conditions compared to medial (72.58%/s) and off the shelf orthoses (74.52%/s). The regression analyses across movements showed that ITB strain was predicted by sagittal and coronal plane mechanics at the hip (R2=0.15-0.30; P<0.05) and sagittal, coronal and transverse plane kinematics at the knee joint (R2=0.15-0.22; P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: Further insight is provided into differences in ITB strain across functional athletic movements, the increased incidence of ITBS in females and the parameters linked most strongly with ITB strain during different movements is provided; whilst also highlighting the prophylactic efficacy of medial and off the shelf orthoses in female runners
A comparison of polarized and non-polarized human endometrial monolayer culture systems on murine embryo development
BACKGROUND: Co-culture of embryos with various somatic cells has been suggested as a promising approach to improve embryo development. Despite numerous reports regarding the beneficial effects of epithelial cells from the female genital tract on embryo development in a co-culture system, little is known about the effect of these cells when being cultured under a polarized condition on embryo growth. Our study evaluated the effects of in vitro polarized cells on pre-embryo development. METHODS: Human endometrial tissue was obtained from uterine specimens excised at total hysterectomy performed for benign indications. Epithelial cells were promptly isolated and cultured either on extra-cellular matrix gel (ECM-Gel) coated millipore filter inserts (polarized) or plastic surfaces (non-polarized). The epithelial nature of the cells cultured on plastic was confirmed through immunohistochemistry, and polarization of cells cultured on ECM-Gel was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). One or two-cell stage embryos of a superovulated NMRI mouse were then flushed and placed in culture with either polarized or non-polarized cells and medium alone. Development rates were determined for all embryos daily and statistically compared. At the end of the cultivation period, trophectoderm (TE) and inner cell mass (ICM) of expanded blastocysts from each group were examined microscopically. RESULTS: Endometrial epithelial cells cultured on ECM-Gel had a highly polarized columnar shape as opposed to the flattened shape of the cells cultured on a plastic surface. The two-cell embryos cultured on a polarized monolayer had a higher developmental rate than those from the non-polarized cells. There was no statistically significant difference; still, the blastocysts from the polarized monolayer, in comparison with the non-polarized group, had a significantly higher mean cell number. The development of one-cell embryos in the polarized and non-polarized groups showed no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION: Polarized cells could improve in vitro embryo development from the two-cell stage more in terms of quality (increasing blastocyst cellularity) than in terms of developmental rate
Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 1 (LRP1) Mediates Neuronal Aβ42 Uptake and Lysosomal Trafficking
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of early intraneuronal deposits of amyloid-beta 42 (Abeta42) that precede extracellular amyloid deposition in vulnerable brain regions. It has been hypothesized that endosomal/lysosomal dysfunction might be associated with the pathological accumulation of intracellular Abeta42 in the brain. Our previous findings suggest that the LDL receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1), a major receptor for apolipoprotein E, facilitates intraneuronal Abeta42 accumulation in mouse brain. However, direct evidence of neuronal endocytosis of Abeta42 through LRP1 is lacking.Here we show that LRP1 endocytic function is required for neuronal Abeta42 uptake. Overexpression of a functional LRP1 minireceptor, mLRP4, increases Abeta42 uptake and accumulation in neuronal lysosomes. Conversely, knockdown of LRP1 expression significantly decreases neuronal Abeta42 uptake. Disruptions of LRP1 endocytic function by either clathrin knockdown or by removal of its cytoplasmic tail decreased both uptake and accumulation of Abeta42 in neurons. Finally, we show that LRP1-mediated neuronal accumulation of Abeta42 is associated with increased cellular toxicity.These results demonstrate that LRP1 endocytic function plays an important role in the uptake and accumulation of Abeta42 in neuronal lysosomes. These findings emphasize the central function of LRP1 in neuronal Abeta metabolism
