    Sensing Subjective Well-being from Social Media

    Subjective Well-being(SWB), which refers to how people experience the quality of their lives, is of great use to public policy-makers as well as economic, sociological research, etc. Traditionally, the measurement of SWB relies on time-consuming and costly self-report questionnaires. Nowadays, people are motivated to share their experiences and feelings on social media, so we propose to sense SWB from the vast user generated data on social media. By utilizing 1785 users' social media data with SWB labels, we train machine learning models that are able to "sense" individual SWB from users' social media.     Dietary nitrate supplementation enhances short but not longer duration running time-trial performance

    Purpose This study evaluated the effects of dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation on physiological functioning and exercise performance in trained runners/ triathletes conducting short and longer distance treadmill running time-trials (TT). Method Eight trained male runners or triathletes completed four exercise performance tests comprising a 10 minute warm up followed by either a 1500 m or 10,000 m treadmill TT. Exercise performance tests were preceded 3 hours before the exercise by supplementation with either 140 ml concentrated nitrate-rich (~ 12.5 mmol nitrate) (BRJ) or nitrate-deplete (~ 0.01 mmol nitrate) (PLA) beetroot juice. Results BRJ supplementation significantly elevated plasma [NO2-] (P 0.05). However, post-exercise blood [lactate] was significantly greater in BRJ following the 1500 m TT (6.6 Ā± 1.2 vs. 6.1 Ā± 1.5 mM; P 0.05). Performance in the 1500 m TT was significantly faster in BRJ versus PLA (319.6 Ā± 36.2 vs. 325.7 Ā± 38.8 s; P 0.05). Conclusion Acute BRJ supplementation significantly enhanced 1500 m but not 10,000 m TT performance. These findings suggest that BRJ might be ergogenic during shorter-distance TTs which allow for a high work rate, but not during longer-distance TTs, completed at a lower work rate

    Trinity University\u27s Summer Bridge Program: Navigating the Changing Demographics in Higher Education

    Our article is divided into five sections. First, our study explores the demographic, economic, and cultural changes influencing higher education. We also explain the tangible and intangible benefits of a college education for first-generation, underrepresented students (FGUS). Second, we provide a brief discussion of the history of Trinity University and our Summer Bridge program. Third, our study describes our Summer Bridge program. Fourth, the data we collected examines how our Summer Bridge studentsā€™ grades and retention rates compare to our other first-year students. And, fifth, our article concludes with a discussion of future directions for our Summer Bridge program and how it may apply to other higher educational institutions. In particular, we offer recommendations for other student affairs professionals who also will be experiencing an increase in first-generation, underrepresented students

    Interaction Properties of the Periodic and Step-like Solutions of the Double-Sine-Gordon Equation

    The periodic and step-like solutions of the double-Sine-Gordon equation are investigated, with different initial conditions and for various values of the potential parameter Ļµ\epsilon. We plot energy and force diagrams, as functions of the inter-soliton distance for such solutions. This allows us to consider our system as an interacting many-body system in 1+1 dimension. We therefore plot state diagrams (pressure vs. average density) for step-like as well as periodic solutions. Step-like solutions are shown to behave similarly to their counterparts in the Sine-Gordon system. However, periodic solutions show a fundamentally different behavior as the parameter Ļµ\epsilon is increased. We show that two distinct phases of periodic solutions exist which exhibit manifestly different behavior. Response functions for these phases are shown to behave differently, joining at an apparent phase transition point.Comment: 17pages, 15 figure

    The opposites task: Using general rules to test cognitive flexibility in preschoolers

Executive functions play an important role in cognitive development, and during the preschool years especially, children's performance is limited in tasks that demand flexibility in their behavior. We asked whether preschoolers would exhibit limitations when they are required to apply a general rule in the context of novel stimuli on every trial (the "opposites" task). Two types of inhibitory processing were measured: response interference (resistance to interference from a competing response) and proactive interference (resistance to interference from a previously relevant rule). Group data show 3-year-olds have difficulty inhibiting prepotent tendencies under these conditions, whereas 5-year-olds' accuracy is near ceiling in the task. (Contains 4 footnotes and 1 table.

    The effects of exposure to appetitive cues on inhibitory control: A meta-analytic investigation

    Ā© 2018 The Authors Inhibitory control refers to the ability to stop, change or delay a response, and is often used in order to protect higher order goals. Theoretical models suggest that appetitive cues such as pictures of alcoholic drinks or food evoke strong automatic appetitive responses which lead to transient impairments in inhibitory control, and that these effects of cues may be related to individual differences (e.g. in body mass index, or alcohol consumption). In order to investigate these claims we conducted a random effects meta-analysis of 66 effect sizes (35 alcohol, 31 food) from 37 articles that tested the effect of exposure to appetitive (alcohol/food) cues on indices of inhibitory control. The overall effect of cue exposure was small, but robust (SMD = āˆ’0.12 [95% CI āˆ’0.23, āˆ’0.02]; Z = 2.34, p =.02, I2= 84%). Exposure to alcohol-related cues significantly impaired inhibitory control (SMD = āˆ’0.21 [95% CI = āˆ’0.32, āˆ’0.11]; Z = 4.17, p <.001), however exposure to food-related cues did not lead to impairments (SMD = āˆ’0.03 [95% CI = āˆ’0.21, 0.15]; Z = 0.36, p =.720). There was no evidence that drinking or weight status significantly moderated the effects of cues on inhibitory control. Similarly, cue modality (words, pictures, or smells) did not significantly moderate the effects. Trim and Fill analysis suggested bias in the literature, which when corrected, made the overall effect of cues non-significant. Overall, these findings provide some tentative support for theoretical claims that exposure to appetitive cues prompts transient impairments in inhibitory control. Further research is required to determine the clinical significance of these observations. However, care should be taken when drawing conclusions from a potentially biased evidence base
