    Get PDF
Scrub Typhus, or tsutsugamushi disease is a febrile illness caused by bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae and named Orientia tsutsugamushi. Recently it has been found to endemic in Subhimalayan region of India.Malaria is highly endemic in rest of India but its prevalence is low in Subhimalayan region because of the altitude. We report a rare case of a patient having coinfection with scrub typhus and malaria

From fusion to total disassembly: global stopping in heavy-ion collisions

Using the quantum molecular dynamics model, we aim to investigate the emis- sion of light complex particles, and degree of stopping reached in heavy-ion colli- sions. We took incident energies between 50 and 1000 MeV/nucleon. In addition, central and peripheral collisions and different masses are also considered. We ob- serve that the light complex particles act in almost similar manner as anisotropic ratio. In other words, multiplicity of light complex particles is an indicator of global stopping in heavy-ion collisions. We see that maximum light complex particles and stopping is obtained for heavier masses in central collisions

Purpose. Shunt capacitors are installed in power system for compensating reactive power. Therefore, feeder capacity releases, voltage profile improves and power loss reduces. However, determination optimal location and size of capacitors in distributionsystems is a complex optimization problem. In order to determine the optimum size and location of the capacitor, an objective function which is generally defined based on capacitor installation costs and power losses should be minimized According to operational limitations. This paper offers a newly developed metaheuristic technique, named dice game optimizerto determine optimal size and location of capacitors in a distribution network. Dice game optimizer is a game based optimization technique that is based on the rules of the dice game.

Cost analysis of critical patient care at a pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary care public hospital in an urban metropolis of India

Background: The cost of critical care is widely recognized as being high. However, it remains a challenge to accurately assess the cost of intensive care due to a lack of standardized methodology. There is also considerable heterogeneity with regard to allocation of resources and distribution of critical care services. Methods: We conducted a prospective study to analyse diagnosis-based costs of paediatric patient care at a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in a public hospital in Mumbai on the basis of identified cost components; direct (fixed and variable) and indirect costs. Results: Out of 167 (102 boys, 61%) patients enrolled, 65 (39%) were aged 1-7 months. They spent an average of 4±1.46 bed days in the PICU. The cost of direct fixed components (salaries, capital equipment, disposables) was Rs. 64,48,200 for six months. The maximum cost of direct variable components spent by the hospital (physiotherapy intervention, expert opinion, investigations, medicines, blood products, piped gases) amounted to Rs. 548.63/patient/day for treatment of non-infectious diseases. Cost of indirect components (building maintenance) was Rs. 12,500/six months. Linear regression analysis showed 83-99.99% dependency of treatment cost to diagnosis and bed days. The average cost of treatment of infectious and non-infectious diagnoses/patient/day spent by the hospital was Rs. 260 and Rs. 548.63 respectively as compared to Rs. 169.96 and Rs. 356.21 spent by the patients. Conclusions: Our study showed that majority of the treatment costs depended on the diagnosis and number of bed days of the patients. Also being a tertiary care public hospital, 60% of the treatment costs were borne by the hospital. Thus, our study attempts to quantify, in financial terms, the expenditure involved in running a paediatric ICU in a tertiary care public hospital so as to assist doctors and healthcare decision makers in the allocation of resources

Study of CeNi4Mn by neutron diffraction

We report neutron diffraction measurements on CeNi4Mn, which has recently been identified as a soft ferromagnet (Tc ~ 140 K) with a sizeable spin-transport polarization. Our data show conclusively that the Mn atoms occupy a unique site (4c) in the unit cell, which has the symmetry of the cubic MgCu4Sn-type structure. We infer a moment of 4.6 mu_B on Mn at 17 K, which is oriented ferromagnetically along the {101} plane. The amplitude of the Mn vibrational motion is found to be larger than that of Ce and Ni atoms at all temperatures, thereby lending support to theoretical prediction of rattling phonon modes in this compound.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solid State Commu

An improved PV system with auto-protection to inject active power into the power grid of marine ships

1132-1142Photovoltaic (PV) system is turning into an ideal secondary power source for marine ships because of the ability to trap nature’s green energy. In this paper, a ship’s power grid connected PV system is proposed. The proposed system will help to inject the active power into the ship’s electric power grid together with a protection scheme, which will prevent the PV system and ship’s power grid from different faulty conditions. The proposed system has facility to track the maximum power point (MPP) of PV array by means of hybrid MPPT method and flyback DC-DC converter. Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique controlled 3-phase full-bridge VSI is used to convert DC bus voltage into useful 3-phase AC output in order to feed the local load and transmit excess AC power into the ship’s bus. Furthermore, an isolation transformer is used to provide galvanic isolation amid PV system and ship’s power grid

Nitrogen Cycling in Pasture Grazed by Lactating Dairy Cows

Increasing use of intensive rotational grazing for livestock production in the USA raises questions about the potential for nitrate-N (NO3- N) leaching losses. In grazing experiments with lactating dairy cows at two sites in the Upper Midwest, we monitored milk production, soil NO3-N concentration, and NO3-N leaching. Dietary supplementation increased milk yield, but there was no measurable impact on NO3-N leaching losses. Leaching volumes and NO3-N losses were small on these silt loam soils, even directly under urine patches. The results suggest that NO3-N leaching is not likely to be a problem on fine-textured soils in the Upper Midwest under pastures dominated by deeply-rooted perennial species, as long as N inputs are moderate and animal management does not degrade the pasture

On the role of different Skyrme forces and surface corrections in exotic cluster-decay

We present cluster decay studies of 56^{56}Ni^* formed in heavy-ion collisions using different Skyrme forces. Our study reveals that different Skyrme forces do not alter the transfer structure of fractional yields significantly. The cluster decay half-lives of different clusters lies within \pm 10% for PCM and \pm 15% for UFM.Comment: 13 pages,6 figures and 1 table; in press Pramana Journal of Physics (2010
