Deep learning applied to EEG source-data reveals both ventral and dorsal visual stream involvement in holistic processing of social stimuli
Perception of social stimuli (faces and bodies) relies on “holistic” (i.e., global) mechanisms, as supported by picture-plane inversion: perceiving inverted faces/bodies is harder than perceiving their upright counterpart. Albeit neuroimaging evidence suggested involvement of face-specific brain areas in holistic processing, their spatiotemporal dynamics and selectivity for social stimuli is still debated. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of holistic processing for faces, bodies and houses (adopted as control non-social category), by applying deep learning to high-density electroencephalographic signals (EEG) at source-level. Convolutional neural networks were trained to classify cortical EEG responses to stimulus orientation (upright/inverted), separately for each stimulus type (faces, bodies, houses), resulting to perform well above chance for faces and bodies, and close to chance for houses. By explaining network decision, the 150–200 ms time interval and few visual ventral-stream regions were identified as mostly relevant for discriminating face and body orientation (lateral occipital cortex, and for face only, precuneus cortex, fusiform and lingual gyri), together with two additional dorsal-stream areas (superior and inferior parietal cortices). Overall, the proposed approach is sensitive in detecting cortical activity underlying perceptual phenomena, and by maximally exploiting discriminant information contained in data, may reveal spatiotemporal features previously undisclosed, stimulating novel investigations
Acceptability with general orderings
We present a new approach to termination analysis of logic programs. The
essence of the approach is that we make use of general orderings (instead of
level mappings), like it is done in transformational approaches to logic
program termination analysis, but we apply these orderings directly to the
logic program and not to the term-rewrite system obtained through some
transformation. We define some variants of acceptability, based on general
orderings, and show how they are equivalent to LD-termination. We develop a
demand driven, constraint-based approach to verify these
acceptability-variants.
The advantage of the approach over standard acceptability is that in some
cases, where complex level mappings are needed, fairly simple orderings may be
easily generated. The advantage over transformational approaches is that it
avoids the transformation step all together.

Unwinding in Information Flow Security
We study information flow security properties which are persistent, in the sense that if a system is secure then all of its reachable states are secure too. We present a uniform characterization of these properties in terms of a general unwinding schema. This unwinding characterization allows us to prove several compositionality properties of the considered security classes. Moreover, we exploit the unwinding condition to dictate the form of the rules we can use to incrementally develop secure processes and to rectify insecure processes
Synthesis, structure–property relationships and absorbance modulation of highly asymmetric photochromes with variable oxidation and substitution patterns
Asymmetric diarylethenes with benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl and 2-thienyl residues having variable oxidation degrees (S and/or SO2) remained unexplored. These photochromes provide reversibly photoswitchable absorbance and multicolor emission modulation. Here we report 18 photochromic 1,2-diarylperfluorocyclopentenes with oxidized and non-oxidized 2-methylbenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl, as well as 5-aryl-3-methylthiophen-2-yl groups. The structure–property relationships were studied for three groups of compounds: non-oxidized, mono-oxidized (to SO2 in the benzothiophene part), and fully-oxidized (to 2 × SO2). The quantum chemistry calculations helped to interpret the substituents’ effects in each group and predict the photophysical properties of yet unavailable photochromes. The photochromic systems with absorbance modulation introduced in this work were designed for the use in diffraction-unlimited writing and reading with light, nanopattering and optical lithography
Combining norms to prove termination
Automatic termination analyzers typically measure the size of terms applying norms which are mappings from terms to the natural numbers. This paper illustrates how to enable the use of size functions defined as tuples of these simpler norm functions. This approach enables us to simplify the problem of deriving automatically a candidate norm with which to prove termination. Instead of deriving a single, complex norm function, it is sufficient to determine a collection of simpler norms, some combination of which, leads to a proof of termination. We propose that a collection of simple norms, one for each of the recursive data-types in the program, is often a suitable choice. We first demonstrate the power of combining norm functions and then the adequacy of combining norms based on regular-types
