If only it were true: the problem with the four conditionals
The traditional division of conditionals into four main types (zero, first, second, and third) has long been called into question. Unfortunately, the awareness that this description does not reflect conditional patterns in actual usage has not generally been reflected in EFL coursebooks. This article re-examines the arguments for a description of conditional patterns which reflects actual usage and uses corpus data to demonstrate the kind of patterns in frequent use. It then suggests two teaching approaches that may help teachers to tackle a variety of conditional patterns in the classroom
Listing Contract Length and Time on Market
Miceli (1989) in a search for the optimal time to allow a broker to market property provides a theoretical model which posits that the principal (seller) may use the length of the listing contract to motivate the agent (listing broker) to better align incentives. Expanding slightly on Miceli, this present work predicts that longer time allotted the broker to market residential property will decrease broker effort resulting in lower search intensity and eventually a longer marketing span for property, ceteris paribus. This prediction is borne out across three empirical modeling methodologies commonly used in time on market studies.
A simple method for the small scale synthesis and solid-phase extraction purification of steroid sulfates
Steroid sulfates are a major class of steroid metabolite that are of growing importance in fields such as anti-doping analysis, the detection of residues in agricultural produce or medicine. Despite this, many steroid sulfate reference materials may have limited or no availability hampering the development of analytical methods. We report simple protocols for the rapid synthesis and purification of steroid sulfates that are suitable for adoption by analytical laboratories. Central to this approach is the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) for purification, a technique routinely used for sample preparation in analytical laboratories around the world. The sulfate conjugates of sixteen steroid compounds encompassing a wide range of steroid substitution patterns and configurations are prepared, including the previously unreported sulfate conjugates of the designer steroids furazadrol (17β-hydroxyandrostan[2,3-d]isoxazole), isofurazadrol (17β-hydroxyandrostan[3,2-c]isoxazole) and trenazone (17β-hydroxyestra-4,9-dien-3-one). Structural characterization data, together with NMR and mass spectra are reported for all steroid sulfates, often for the first time. The scope of this approach for small scale synthesis is highlighted by the sulfation of 1μg of testosterone (17β-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one) as monitored by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS).We thank the Australian Research Council (LP120200444) for

“Free Will and Affirmation: Assessing Honderich’s Third Way”
In the third and final part of his A Theory of Determinism (TD) Ted Honderich addresses the fundamental question concerning “the consequences of determinism.” The critical question he aims to answer is what follows if determinism is true? This question is, of course, intimately bound up with the problem of free will and, in particular, with the question of whether or not the truth of determinism is compatible or incompatible with the sort of freedom required for moral responsibility. It is Honderich’s aim to provide a solution to “the problem of the consequences of determinism” and a key element of this is his articulation and defence of an alternative response to the implications of determinism that collapses the familiar Compatibilist/Incompatibilist dichotomy. Honderich offers us a third way – the response of “Affirmation” (HFY 125-6). Although his account of Affirmation has application and relevance to issues and features beyond freedom and responsibility, my primary concern in this essay will be to examine Honderich’s theory of “Affirmation” as it concerns the free will problem
Performance of AAOmega: the AAT multi-purpose fibre-fed spectrograph
AAOmega is the new spectrograph for the 2dF fibre-positioning system on the
Anglo-Australian Telescope. It is a bench-mounted, double-beamed design, using
volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings and articulating cameras. It is fed by
392 fibres from either of the two 2dF field plates, or by the 512 fibre SPIRAL
integral field unit (IFU) at Cassegrain focus. Wavelength coverage is 370 to
950nm and spectral resolution 1,000-8,000 in multi-Object mode, or 1,500-10,000
in IFU mode. Multi-object mode was commissioned in January 2006 and the IFU
system will be commissioned in June 2006.
The spectrograph is located off the telescope in a thermally isolated room
and the 2dF fibres have been replaced by new 38m broadband fibres. Despite the
increased fibre length, we have achieved a large increase in throughput by use
of VPH gratings, more efficient coatings and new detectors - amounting to a
factor of at least 2 in the red. The number of spectral resolution elements and
the maximum resolution are both more than doubled, and the stability is an
order of magnitude better.
The spectrograph comprises: an f/3.15 Schmidt collimator, incorporating a
dichroic beam-splitter; interchangeable VPH gratings; and articulating red and
blue f/1.3 Schmidt cameras. Pupil size is 190mm, determined by the competing
demands of cost, obstruction losses, and maximum resolution. A full suite of
VPH gratings has been provided to cover resolutions 1,000 to 7,500, and up to

Alignment and Aperture Scan at the Fermilab Booster
The Fermilab booster has an intensity upgrade plan called the Proton
Improvement plan (PIP). The flux throughput goal is 2E17 protons/hour, which is
almost double the current operation at 1.1E17 protons/hour. The beam loss in
the machine is going to be the source of issues. The booster accelerates beam
from 400 MeV to 8 GeV and extracts to the Main Injector. Several percent of the
beam is lost within 3 msec after the injection. The aperture at injection
energy was measured and compared with the survey data. The magnets are going to
be realigned in March 2012 in order to increase the aperture. The beam studies,
analysis of the scan and alignment data, and the result of the magnet moves

Pattern Formation on Trees
Networks having the geometry and the connectivity of trees are considered as
the spatial support of spatiotemporal dynamical processes. A tree is
characterized by two parameters: its ramification and its depth. The local
dynamics at the nodes of a tree is described by a nonlinear map, given rise to
a coupled map lattice system. The coupling is expressed by a matrix whose
eigenvectors constitute a basis on which spatial patterns on trees can be
expressed by linear combination. The spectrum of eigenvalues of the coupling
matrix exhibit a nonuniform distribution which manifest itself in the
bifurcation structure of the spatially synchronized modes. These models may
describe reaction-diffusion processes and several other phenomena occurring on

Training AAC users in user-centred design
User-centred design (UCD) with a focus on usability provides product developers with a design approach in which users are involved in every stage of the process: when gathering requirements; when evaluating alternative designs; and when evaluating interactive prototypes.The characteristics of people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) make it difficult to follow a truly UCD approach, which in part may contribute to the high rejection of AAC devices. Training workshops have been delivered to introduce users and AAC professionals to the UCD process.Initial feedback indicates that they feel more empowered to evaluate systems and to engage in the design of new systems after attending the workshop
New way to achieve chaotic synchronization in spatially extended systems
We study the spatio-temporal behavior of simple coupled map lattices with
periodic boundary conditions. The local dynamics is governed by two maps,
namely, the sine circle map and the logistic map respectively. It is found that
even though the spatial behavior is irregular for the regularly coupled
(nearest neighbor coupling) system, the spatially synchronized (chaotic
synchronization) as well as periodic solution may be obtained by the
introduction of three long range couplings at the cost of three nearest
