Credible, Truthful, and Two-Round (Optimal) Auctions via Cryptographic Commitments
We consider the sale of a single item to multiple buyers by a
revenue-maximizing seller. Recent work of Akbarpour and Li formalizes
\emph{credibility} as an auction desideratum, and prove that the only optimal,
credible, strategyproof auction is the ascending price auction with reserves
(Akbarpour and Li, 2019).
In contrast, when buyers' valuations are MHR, we show that the mild
additional assumption of a cryptographically secure commitment scheme suffices
for a simple \emph{two-round} auction which is optimal, strategyproof, and
credible (even when the number of bidders is only known by the auctioneer).
We extend our analysis to the case when buyer valuations are
-strongly regular for any , up to arbitrary
in credibility. Interestingly, we also prove that this construction cannot be
extended to regular distributions, nor can the be removed with
multiple bidders
Comment on "Density and Spin response of a strongly-interacting Fermi gas in the attractive and quasi-repulsive regime"
This is a comment on Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 080401 (2012) by Palestini et al.
We pointed out that the diagrammatic method in that article violates gauge
invariance. As a consequence, there will a Meissner effect in the normal phase
and the contribution from collective modes are not mentioned in the
symmetry-broken phase.Comment: 1 page, no figur
Markov-Switching Model Selection Using Kullback-Leibler Divergence
In Markov-switching regression models, we use Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the true and candidate models to select the number of states and variables simultaneously. In applying Akaike information criterion (AIC), which is an estimate of KL divergence, we find that AIC retains too many states and variables in the model. Hence, we derive a new information criterion, Markov switching criterion (MSC), which yields a marked improvement in state determination and variable selection because it imposes an appropriate penalty to mitigate the over-retention of states in the Markov chain. MSC performs well in Monte Carlo studies with single and multiple states, small and large samples, and low and high noise. Furthermore, it not only applies to Markov-switching regression models, but also performs well in Markov- switching autoregression models. Finally, the usefulness of MSC is illustrated via applications to the U.S. business cycle and the effectiveness of media advertising.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

Very large magnetoresistance in FeTaS single crystals
Magnetic moments intercalated into layered transition metal dichalcogenides
are an excellent system for investigating the rich physics associated with
magnetic ordering in a strongly anisotropic, strong spin-orbit coupling
environment. We examine electronic transport and magnetization in
FeTaS, a highly anisotropic ferromagnet with a Curie temperature
K. We find anomalous Hall data confirming a
dominance of spin-orbit coupling in the magnetotransport properties of this
material, and a remarkably large field-perpendicular-to-plane MR exceeding 60%
at 2 K, much larger than the typical MR for bulk metals, and comparable to
state-of-the-art GMR in thin film heterostructures, and smaller only than CMR
in Mn perovskites or high mobility semiconductors. Even within the
FeTaS series, for the current = 0.28 single crystals the MR is
nearly higher than that found previously in the commensurate
compound FeTaS. After considering alternatives, we argue that
the large MR arises from spin disorder scattering in the strong spin-orbit
coupling environment, and suggest that this can be a design principle for
materials with large MR.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted in PR
