    Similarity of nuclear structure in 132Sn and 208Pb regions: proton-neutron multiplets

    Starting from the striking similarity of proton-neutron multiplets in 134Sb and 210Bi, we perform a shell-model study of nuclei with two additional protons or neutrons to find out to what extent this analogy persists. We employ effective interactions derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential renormalized by use of the V-low-k approach. The calculated results for 136Sb, 212Bi, 136I, and 212At are in very good agreement with the available experimental data. The similarity between 132Sn and 208Pb regions is discussed in connection with the effective interaction, emphasizing the role of core polarization effects.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    Relativity and the lead-acid battery

    The energies of the solid reactants in the lead-acid battery are calculated ab initio using two different basis sets at non-relativistic, scalar relativistic, and fully relativistic levels, and using several exchange-correlation potentials. The average calculated standard voltage is 2.13 V, compared with the experimental value of 2.11 V. All calculations agree in that 1.7-1.8 V of this standard voltage arise from relativistic effects, mainly from PbO2 but also from PbSO4

    Self energies of the pion and the delta isobar from the ^3He(e,e'pi^+)^3H reaction

    In a kinematically complete experiment at the Mainz microtron MAMI, pion angular distributions of the 3^3He(e,e'π+)3\pi^+)^3H reaction have been measured in the excitation region of the Δ\Delta resonance to determine the longitudinal (LL), transverse (TT), and the LTLT interference part of the differential cross section. The data are described only after introducing self-energy modifications of the pion and Δ\Delta-isobar propagators. Using Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to extrapolate the pion self energy as inferred from the measurement on the mass shell, we deduce a reduction of the π+\pi^+ mass of Δmπ+=(1.72.1+1.7)\Delta m_{\pi^+} = (-1.7^{+ 1.7}_{- 2.1}) MeV/c2^2 in the neutron-rich nuclear medium at a density of ρ=(0.0570.057+0.085)\rho = (0.057^{+ 0.085}_{- 0.057}) fm3^{-3}. Our data are consistent with the Δ\Delta self energy determined from measurements of π0\pi^0 photoproduction from 4^4He and heavier nuclei.Comment: Elsart, 12 pages and 4 figures, Correspondent: Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult.     Final State Interaction in Exclusive (e,eNN)(e,e'NN) Reactions

    Contributions of nucleon-nucleon (NN) correlations, meson exchange currents and the residual final state interactions (FSI) on exclusive two-nucleon knock-out reactions induced by electron scattering are investigated. All contributions are derived from the same realistic meson exchange model for the NN interaction. Effects of correlations and FSI are determined in a consistent way by solving the NN scattering equation, the Bethe-Goldstone equation, for two nucleons in nuclear matter. One finds that the FSI re-scattering terms are non-negligible even if the two nucleons are emitted back to back.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    The Impact of Olfactory Disorders in the United Kingdom

    Olfactory disorders are believed to affect 5% of the general population and have been shown to bear significant psychosocial consequences to sufferers. Although more common than blindness and profound deafness in the United Kingdom, the impact of these disorders has not been assessed to date and the plight of British patients has yet to be quantified. In 2012, a patient support organization, Fifth Sense, was founded to provide information and support to sufferers of chemosensory disorders. Following a recent members conference, a survey of the membership was conducted anonymously using a series of questions based on an existing olfactory disorders questionnaire. From 496 respondents, this has demonstrated high rates of depression (43%) and anxiety (45%), impairment of eating experience (92%), isolation (57%), and relationship difficulties (54%). Women appear to have significantly more issues than men in terms of social and domestic dysfunction relating to olfactory loss (P = 0.01). Qualitative disorders also affected more than 1 in 5 members with parosmia reported in 19% and phantosmia in 24%.     Nuclear shell-model calculations for 6Li and 14N with different NN potentials

    Two ``phase-shift equivalent'' local NN potentials with different parametrizations, Reid93 and NijmII, which were found to give nearly identical results for the triton by Friar et al, are shown to yield remarkably similar results for 6Li and 14N in a (0+2)hw no-core space shell-model calculation. The results are compared with those for the widely used Hamada-Johnson hard-core and the original Reid soft-core potentials, which have larger deuteron D-state percentages. The strong correlation between the tensor strength and the nuclear binding energy is confirmed. However, many nuclear-structure properties seem to be rather insensitive to the details of the NN potential and, therefore, cannot be used to test various NN potentials. (Submitted to Phys. Rev.     Nucleon-Nucleon Correlations and Two-Nucleon Currents in Exclusive (e,eNNe,e'NN) Reactions

    The contributions of short-range nucleon-nucleon (NN) correlations, various meson exchange current (MEC) terms and the influence of Δ\Delta isobar excitations (isobaric currents, IC) on exclusive two-nucleon knockout reactions induced by electron scattering are investigated. The nuclear structure functions are evaluated for nuclear matter. Realistic NN interactions derived in the framework of One-Boson-Exchange model are employed to evaluate the effects of correlations and MEC in a consistent way. The correlations correlations are determined by solving the Bethe-Goldstone equation. This yields significant contributions to the structure functions W_L and W_T of the (e,e'pn) and (e,e'pp) reactions. These contributions compete with MEC corrections originating from the π\pi and ρ\rho exchange terms of the same interaction. Special attention is paid to the so-called 'super parallel' kinematics at momentum transfers which can be measured e.g. at MAMI in Mainz.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures include

    Effects of non-resonant photoproductions arising from two different πNN\pi NN couplings are investigated in the γNππN\gamma N\to\pi\pi N reaction. We find that the pseudoscalar (PS) πNN\pi NN coupling is generally preferable to the pseudovector (PV) πNN\pi NN coupling and particularly the total cross sections are successfully described by the model with the PS πNN\pi NN coupling. In order to see the difference between the two couplings, we also show the results of invariant mass spectra and helicity-dependent cross sections in various isospin channels calculated with the PS and PV couplings.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, minor changes and version to be published in Phys.Rev.

    Polarization transfer in the 4^{4}He(e,ep3(\vec{e},e' \vec{p}^{3}H reaction

    Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering.     First identification of excited states in the Tz_z = 1/2 nucleus 93^{93}Pd

    The first experimental information about excited states in the N = Z + 1 nucleus 93Pd is presented. The experiment was performed using a 205 MeV 58Ni beam from the Vivitron accelerator at IReS, Strasbourg, impinging on a bismuth-backed 40Ca target. Gamma-rays, neutrons and charged particles emitted in the reactions were detected using the Ge detector array Euroball, the Neutron Wall liquid-scintillator array and the Euclides Si charged-particle detector system. The experimental level scheme is compared with the results of new shell model calculations which predict a coupling scheme with aligned neutron-proton pairs to greatly influence the level structure of NZN\approx Z nuclei at low excitation energies
