Numerous tillage studies have been conducted in Iowa, the Midwest, and throughout the U.S. with a wide range of results. The tillage system that results in the highest yield depends on several factors including soil type and weather during the study Generally, systems with little soil disturbance are favored on coarser textured soils and/or in drier years (Eckert 1987; Beyaert et al 2002). For soil and water conservation purposes, as well as for economic reasons, extending successful use of no-till or similar systems to finer textured soils seems advantageous

Materials for low temperature SOFCs.
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are one of the potentially most efficient and clean energy conversion technologies for electric utility applications. Laboratory cells have shown extraordinary durability, and actual utility-scale prototypes have worked very well. The main obstacle to commercialization has been the relatively high manufacturing cost. To reduce these costs, efforts have been underway for several years to adapt manufacturing technology from the semiconductor industry to the SOFCs; however, tape casting, screen printing and similar methods are more applicable to planar configurations than to the more proven tubular ones. In planar cells the bipolar plate and edge seals become more critical elements, and material selection may have repercussions for the other fuel cell components. Ferritic stainless steel bipolar plates may be a good choice for reducing the cost of the stacks, but ferritic steels oxidize rapidly at temperatures above 800 C. Inexorably, one is led to the conclusion that anodes, cathodes and electrolytes operating below 800 C need to be found. Another motivation for developing planar SOFCs operating at reduced temperature is the prospect of new non-utility applications. The U.S. Department of Energy has initiated the Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) program for developing small modular stacks ranging in capacity from 5 to 10 kW{sup (1)}. This size range meets the power requirements of auxiliary power units for heavy and perhaps even light-duty vehicles, and also for remote stationary applications. In terms of electric capacity, the distributed electric utility market may well exceed the potential market for APUs, but the number of units produced could be higher for the latter, yielding cost benefits related to mass production. On the other hand, the fuel for use in transportation or remote stationary applications will consist of gasoline, diesel or propane, which contain higher sulfur levels than natural gas. Anodes with some resistance to sulfur poisoning would be desirable. Also, during the more frequent shutdowns and startups in these applications, the anodes may get exposed to air. Typical nickel-based SOFC anodes may not tolerate air exposure very well and may need to be modified. Molecular genetics improves the management of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer
Background. The syndrome of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) can be diagnosed fairly accurately using clinical criteria and a family history. Identifying HNPCC helps to prevent large-bowel cancer, or allows cancer to be treated at an early stage. Once the syndrome has been diagnosed'a family member's risk can be judged approximately from a family tree, or it can now be predicted accurately if the causative mutation is known.Objective. This study involved attempts to improve the management of a family with HNPCC over a period of 10 years. Clinical diagnostic criteria, colonoscopic surveillance, surgical treatment, genetic counselling, molecular genetic research, and finally predictive genetic testing were applied as they evolved during this time.Subjects and methods. A rural general practitioner first noted inherited large-bowel cancer in the family and began screening subjects as they presented, using rigid sigmoidoscopy at the local hospital. At the time that the disorder was recognised as being HNPCC (1987), screening by means of colonoscopy at our university hospital was aimed primarily at first-degree relatives of affected individuals. After realising how many.were at risk, screening was brought closer to the family. A team of clinicians and researchers visited the local hospital to identify and counsel those at risk and to perform screening colonoscopy. Family members were recruited for research to find the gene and its mutation that causes the disease, to develop an accurate predictive test and to reduce the number of subjects undergoing surveillance colonoscopies.Results. There are approximately 500 individuals in this family. In the 10 years of this study the number of subjects who have been counselled for increased genetic risk or who have requested colonoscopic surveillance for HNPCC in this kindred has increased from 20 to 140. After the causative mutation was found in the hMLHl gene on chromosome 3, a test for it has reduced the number of subjects who need screening colonoscopy by over 70%. A protocol has been devised to inform family members, to acquire material for research in order to provide genetic counselling for (pre-test and post-test) risk, and to test for the mutation. Eventually, identifying those with the mutation should focus surveillance accurately.Conclusions. The benefits of restricting screening to subjects with the mutation that causes colorectal cancer and of performing operations to prevent cancer are hard to measure accurately. However, it is likely that at least half the family members will be able to avoid colonoscopic screening, some deaths from cancer should be prevented, and the cost of preventing and treating cancer in the family should fall substantially
Exploring the measurement of markedness and its relationship with other linguistic variables
Antonym pair members can be differentiated by each word's markedness-that distinction attributable to the presence or absence of features at morphological or semantic levels. Morphologically marked words incorporate their unmarked counterpart with additional morphs (e.g., "unlucky" vs. "lucky"); properties used to determine semantically marked words (e.g., "short" vs. "long") are less clearly defined. Despite extensive theoretical scrutiny, the lexical properties of markedness have received scant empirical study. The current paper employs an antonym sequencing approach to measure markedness: establishing markedness probabilities for individual words and evaluating their relationship with other lexical properties (e.g., length, frequency, valence). Regression analyses reveal that markedness probability is, as predicted, related to affixation and also strongly related to valence. Our results support the suggestion that antonym sequence is reflected in discourse, and further analysis demonstrates that markedness probabilities, derived from the antonym sequencing task, reflect the ordering of antonyms within natural language. In line with the Pollyanna Hypothesis, we argue that markedness is closely related to valence; language users demonstrate a tendency to present words evaluated positively ahead of those evaluated negatively if given the choice. Future research should consider the relationship of markedness and valence, and the influence of contextual information in determining which member of an antonym pair is marked or unmarked within discourse
Assessing Semantic Similarities among Geospatial Feature Class Definitions
The assessment of semantic similarity among objects is a basic requirement for semantic interoperability. This paper presents an innovative approach to semantic similarity assessment by combining the advantages of two different strategies: featurematching process and semantic distance calculation. The model involves a knowledge base of spatial concepts that consists of semantic relations (is-a and part-whole) and distinguishing features (functions, parts, and attributes). By taking into consideration cognitive properties of similarity assessments, this model expects to represent a cognitively plausible and computationally achievable method for measuring the degree of interoperability
