Component-wise incremental LTL model checking
Efficient symbolic and explicit-state model checking
approaches have been developed for the verification of linear
time temporal
logic (LTL) properties. Several attempts have been made to
combine the advantages of the various algorithms. Model
checking LTL
properties usually poses two challenges: one must compute the
synchronous product of the state space and the automaton
model of the
desired property, then look for counterexamples that is
reduced to finding strongly connected components (SCCs) in
the state space
of the product. In case of concurrent systems, where the
phenomenon of state space explosion often prevents the
successful
verification, the so-called saturation algorithm has proved
its efficiency in state space exploration. This paper
proposes a new
approach that leverages the saturation algorithm both as an
iteration strategy constructing the product directly, as well
as in a
new fixed-point computation algorithm to find strongly
connected components on-the-fly by incrementally processing
the components
of the model. Complementing the search for SCCs, explicit
techniques and component-wise abstractions are used to prove
the absence
of counterexamples. The resulting on-the-fly, incremental LTL
model checking algorithm proved to scale well with the size
of
models, as the evaluation on models of the Model Checking
Contest suggests
Quantization of Midisuperspace Models
We give a comprehensive review of the quantization of midisuperspace models.
Though the main focus of the paper is on quantum aspects, we also provide an
introduction to several classical points related to the definition of these
models. We cover some important issues, in particular, the use of the principle
of symmetric criticality as a very useful tool to obtain the required
Hamiltonian formulations. Two main types of reductions are discussed: those
involving metrics with two Killing vector fields and spherically symmetric
models. We also review the more general models obtained by coupling matter
fields to these systems. Throughout the paper we give separate discussions for
standard quantizations using geometrodynamical variables and those relying on
loop quantum gravity inspired methods.Comment: To appear in Living Review in Relativit
Scaling and criticality of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid
A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to
study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid.
This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to
simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic
susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for
temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic
potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong
electron-electron interactions, g_c < 1/2, and anomalous power laws for 1/2<g_c
< 1, where g_c is the correlation parameter of the Luttinger liquid. These
findings resolve a recent controversy. If elastic potential scattering is
present, we find a logarithmically divergent impurity susceptibility at g_c<1/2

Cellular preservation of musculoskeletal specializations in the Cretaceous bird Confuciusornis
The hindlimb of theropod dinosaurs changed appreciably in the lineage leading to extant birds, becoming more ‘crouched’ in association with changes to body shape and gait dynamics. This postural evolution included anatomical changes of the foot and ankle, altering the moment arms and control of the muscles that manipulated the tarsometatarsus and digits, but the timing of these changes is unknown. Here, we report cellular-level preservation of tendon- and cartilage-like tissues from the lower hindlimb of Early Cretaceous Confuciusornis. The digital flexor tendons passed through cartilages, cartilaginous cristae and ridges on the plantar side of the distal tibiotarsus and proximal tarsometatarsus, as in extant birds. In particular, fibrocartilaginous and cartilaginous structures on the plantar surface of the ankle joint of Confuciusornis may indicate a more crouched hindlimb posture. Recognition of these specialized soft tissues in Confuciusornis is enabled by our combination of imaging and chemical analyses applied to an exceptionally preserved fossil
Mathematical Evaluation of Community Level Impact of Combining Bed Nets and Indoor Residual Spraying upon Malaria Transmission in Areas where the main Vectors are Anopheles Arabiensis Mosquitoes.
Indoor residual insecticide spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) are commonly used together even though evidence that such combinations confer greater protection against malaria than either method alone is inconsistent. A deterministic model of mosquito life cycle processes was adapted to allow parameterization with results from experimental hut trials of various combinations of untreated nets or LLINs (Olyset, PermaNet 2.0, Icon Life nets) with IRS (pirimiphos methyl, lambda cyhalothrin, DDT), in a setting where vector populations are dominated by Anopheles arabiensis, so that community level impact upon malaria transmission at high coverage could be predicted. Intact untreated nets alone provide equivalent personal protection to all three LLINs. Relative to IRS plus untreated nets, community level protection is slightly higher when Olyset or PermaNet 2.0 nets are added onto IRS with pirimiphos methyl or lambda cyhalothrin but not DDT, and when Icon Life nets supplement any of the IRS insecticides. Adding IRS onto any net modestly enhances communal protection when pirimiphos methyl is sprayed, while spraying lambda cyhalothrin enhances protection for untreated nets but not LLINs. Addition of DDT reduces communal protection when added to LLINs. Where transmission is mediated primarily by An. arabiensis, adding IRS to high LLIN coverage provides only modest incremental benefit (e.g. when an organophosphate like pirimiphos methyl is used), but can be redundant (e.g. when a pyrethroid like lambda cyhalothin is used) or even regressive (e.g. when DDT is used for the IRS). Relative to IRS plus untreated nets, supplementing IRS with LLINs will only modestly improve community protection. Beyond the physical protection that intact nets provide, additional protection against transmission by An. arabiensis conferred by insecticides will be remarkably small, regardless of whether they are delivered as LLINs or IRS. The insecticidal action of LLINs and IRS probably already approaches their absolute limit of potential impact upon this persistent vector so personal protection of nets should be enhanced by improving the physical integrity and durability. Combining LLINs and non-pyrethroid IRS in residual transmission systems may nevertheless be justified as a means to manage insecticide resistance and prevent potential rebound of not only An. arabiensis, but also more potent, vulnerable and historically important species such as Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus
Global and regional brain metabolic scaling and its functional consequences
Background: Information processing in the brain requires large amounts of
metabolic energy, the spatial distribution of which is highly heterogeneous
reflecting complex activity patterns in the mammalian brain.
Results: Here, it is found based on empirical data that, despite this
heterogeneity, the volume-specific cerebral glucose metabolic rate of many
different brain structures scales with brain volume with almost the same
exponent around -0.15. The exception is white matter, the metabolism of which
seems to scale with a standard specific exponent -1/4. The scaling exponents
for the total oxygen and glucose consumptions in the brain in relation to its
volume are identical and equal to , which is significantly larger
than the exponents 3/4 and 2/3 suggested for whole body basal metabolism on
body mass.
Conclusions: These findings show explicitly that in mammals (i)
volume-specific scaling exponents of the cerebral energy expenditure in
different brain parts are approximately constant (except brain stem
structures), and (ii) the total cerebral metabolic exponent against brain
volume is greater than the much-cited Kleiber's 3/4 exponent. The
neurophysiological factors that might account for the regional uniformity of
the exponents and for the excessive scaling of the total brain metabolism are
discussed, along with the relationship between brain metabolic scaling and

Thermally Activated Resonant Magnetization Tunneling in Molecular Magnets: Mn_12Ac and others
The dynamical theory of thermally activated resonant magnetization tunneling
in uniaxially anisotropic magnetic molecules such as Mn_12Ac (S=10) is
developed.The observed slow dynamics of the system is described by master
equations for the populations of spin levels.The latter are obtained by the
adiabatic elimination of fast degrees of freedom from the density matrix
equation with the help of the perturbation theory developed earlier for the
tunneling level splitting [D. A. Garanin, J. Phys. A, 24, L61 (1991)]. There
exists a temperature range (thermally activated tunneling) where the escape
rate follows the Arrhenius law, but has a nonmonotonic dependence on the bias
field due to tunneling at the top of the barrier. At lower temperatures this
regime crosses over to the non-Arrhenius law (thermally assisted tunneling).
The transition between the two regimes can be first or second order, depending
on the transverse field, which can be tested in experiments. In both regimes
the resonant maxima of the rate occur when spin levels in the two potential
wells match at certain field values. In the thermally activated regime at low
dissipation each resonance has a multitower self-similar structure with
progressively narrowing peaks mounting on top of each other.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure
