Estimating the determinants of the unemployment duration for college graduates in Taiwan

    No full text
This paper incorporates unmeasured heterogeneity into the econometric specification to estimate the determinants of the unemployment duration for college graduates in Taiwan. Empirical results indicate that personal characteristics and job search variables are significant determinants while family background variables show little effect. The insignificance of the financial constraint variable suggests that the scheduled unemployment compensation programme may not have any impact on the search unemployment duration for college graduates in Taiwan.

Estimating Fair Capital Holdings with Stochastic Interest Rates for Banks in Taiwan

    No full text
[[abstract]]This study estimates the fair capital holdings implied by the current deposit insurance premiums for banks in Taiwan. We adopt the deposit-insurance model with stochastic interest rates and develop a two-step approach, combining a MLE and a simultaneous-equation system, to solve the implied capital. The empirical results for the time period from 1991 to 2002 indicate that all types of banks, government or private, large or small, old or new, are generally under-capitalized at current deposit insurance premiums. The amount of estimated capital infusion required for most banks is higher under the stochastic interest rate than that under the constant interest rate. Moreover, there is an identification issue for estimating the risk factor effect under the constant interest rate model due to the opposite direction of the effect of the interest rate risk and the credit risk on the capital requirement. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish the interest rate risk and credit risk in order to correctly identify the risk factor effect on the capital requirement.[[fileno]]2070208010003[[department]]經濟學

A Multinomial Logit Analysis of Methods Used by Persons who Completed Suicide

    No full text
[[abstract]]This paper presents a multinomial logit analysis of the methods used by Taiwanese individuals who completed suicide between 1991 and 1993. We investigated the influence of age, gender, urban or rural residence, seasons, and occupations on the six “choices” of suicide methods. The findings suggest that a systematic pattern exists between the choice of method and demographic characteristics of persons who have completed suicide. Most of the different patterns of suicide by sex, age, occupation, or residence can be understood by the different availability and accessibility to the means of suicide faced by the individuals. Our findings support Becker's (1962, 1974, 1993) contention that all kinds of human behavior or choices are shaped by the constraints imposed on the individuals. The findings also have important policy implications for suicide prevention in that they support Lester's advocacy to prevent or reduce suicide incidents by limiting availability, blocking accessibility, or “inconveniencing” the suicidal individuals.[[fileno]]2070208010006[[department]]經濟學

A reexamination of "sociological and economic theories of suicide: A comparison of the U.S.A. and Taiwan"

This paper is an update and reexamination of Yang et al. [Yang B., Lester D. and Yang C. Soc. Sci. Med. 34, 333, 1992]. Time-series analyses were carried out to explore the importance of sociological and economic determinants of suicide rates in the U.S. and in Taiwan for 1952-1992. Labor market related variables (unemployment and female labor force participation) were found to play similar roles in multiple regressions for both nations, while general economic and social conditions (GNP per capita and divorce) played a role only in the U.S. A comparison of standardized coefficients revealed that pure economic variables exerted greater influence over national suicide rates than sociological variables.suicide U.S.A. Estimating the cost of deposit insurance with stochastic interest rates: the case of Taiwan

    No full text
This study measures the deposit insurance premium under stochastic interest rates for Taiwan's banks by applying the two-step maximum likelihood estimation method. The estimation results suggest that the current premiums—charging 5, 5.5, and 6 basis points per dollar of insured deposits—are too low, but largely reflect the rank orders of the risks of the insured banks. Moreover, the regression results indicate that asset volatility dominates bank size in determining the insurance premium. When the volatility risk is decomposed into two parts, credit risk significantly dominates interest-rate risk. An examination of bank characteristics indicates that privately owned old banks are more likely to have lower levels of credit risk, asset volatility, and deposit insurance premiums than state-owned banks and newly chartered banks.Deposit insurance, Stochastic interest rates,
