In Natural propositions (2014), Stjernfelt contends that the interpretation of a proposition or dicisign requires the joint action of two kinds of signs. A proposition must contain a sign that conveys a general quality. This function can be served by a similarity-based icon or code-based symbol. In addition, a proposition must situate or apply this general quality, so that the predication can become liable of being true or false. This function is served by an index. Stjernfelt rightly considers the co-localization of these two parts to be a primitive phenomenon. Although this primitive character would seem to bar any further analysis, I endeavor to clarify the degree of proximity sufficient to enable co-localization. Siding with Pietarinen (2014), who argues that the whole issue should not be construed in metric terms, I conclude that one cannot make sense of propositional co-localization without appealing to some form of first-person perspective

The Great Increase in Relative Volatility of Real Wages in the United States
This paper documents that over the past 25 years, aggregate hourly real wages in the United States have become substantially more volatile relative to output. We use micro-data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) to show that this increase in relative volatility is predominantly due to increases in the relative volatility of hourly wages across different groups of workers. Compositional changes, by contrast, account for at most 12% of the increase in relative wage volatility. Using a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model, we show that the observed increase in relative wage volatility is unlikely to come from changes outside of the labor market (e.g. smaller exogenous shocks or more aggressive monetary policy). By contrast, increased flexibility in wage setting is capable of accounting for a large fraction of the observed increase in relative wage volatility. At the same time, increased wage flexibility generates a substantial decrease in the magnitude of business cycle fluctuations, which suggests a promising new explanation for the Great Moderation.Wage volatility, business cycles, great moderation, current population survey, dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models
Distributed Cooperative Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks without NLOS Identification
In this paper, a 2-stage robust distributed algorithm is proposed for
cooperative sensor network localization using time of arrival (TOA) data
without identification of non-line of sight (NLOS) links. In the first stage,
to overcome the effect of outliers, a convex relaxation of the Huber loss
function is applied so that by using iterative optimization techniques, good
estimates of the true sensor locations can be obtained. In the second stage,
the original (non-relaxed) Huber cost function is further optimized to obtain
refined location estimates based on those obtained in the first stage. In both
stages, a simple gradient descent technique is used to carry out the
optimization. Through simulations and real data analysis, it is shown that the
proposed convex relaxation generally achieves a lower root mean squared error
(RMSE) compared to other convex relaxation techniques in the literature. Also
by doing the second stage, the position estimates are improved and we can
achieve an RMSE close to that of the other distributed algorithms which know
\textit{a priori} which links are in NLOS.Comment: Accepted in WPNC 201
Tracking Inferences Is not Enough: The Given as Tie-Breaker
Most inferentialists hope to bypass givenness by tracking the conditionals claimants are implicitly committed to. I argue that this approach is underdetermined because one can always construct parallel trees of conditionals. I illustrate this using the Müller-Lyer illusion and touching a table. In the former case, the lines are either even or uneven; in the latter case, a moving hand will either sweep through or be halted. For each possibility, we can rationally foresee consequents. However, I argue that, until and unless we benefit from what is given in experience, we cannot know whether to affirm the antecedents of those conditionals

Supersonic through-flow fan assessment
A study was conducted to assess the performance potential of a supersonic through-flow fan engine for supersonic cruise aircraft. It included a mean-line analysis of fans designed to operate with in-flow velocities ranging from subsonic to high supersonic speeds. The fan performance generated was used to estimate the performance of supersonic fan engines designed for four applications: a Mach 2.3 supersonic transport, a Mach 2.5 fighter, a Mach 3.5 cruise missile, and a Mach 5.0 cruise vehicle. For each application an engine was conceptualized, fan performance and engine performance calculated, weight estimates made, engine installed in a hypothetical vehicle, and mission analysis was conducted
