Town of Avon: A Case Study in Pavement Preservation
In this session presenters will discuss how the town of Avon has implemented and managed their pavement preservation program. This proactive program which began in the late 1990’s, resulted in good roads, a good overall network rating and an overall reduction in construction costs. Presenters will discuss the assessment of the road network, selection of treatments, and candidate selection. Representatives from the agency, contractor, and engineering firm will be on hand to discuss ideas and answer questions
Segmented Motion Compensation for Complementary Coded Ultrasonic Imaging
Ultrasonic imaging using complementary coded pulses offers the SNR improvements of signal coding without the filter side-lobes introduced by single-transmit codes. Tissue motion between coded pulse emissions, however, can introduce high side-lobes caused by misalignment of complementary filter outputs. This paper presents a method for filtering and motion compensation of complementary coded signals appropriate for use in medical imaging. The method is robust to the effects of non-ideal transducers on the imaging signals, includes mirrored compensation stages to reduce the impact of motion estimation error, and has been shown to reduce side-lobes to levels that compare favorably to systems using FM-coded signals of similar length and bandwidth while providing increased coding gain and range resolution. In addition, motion compensation allows the received data to be used without the frame-rate penalty usually incurred by complementary-coded imaging. The method has been verified using simulated point and speckle targets with both homogeneous and inhomogeneous motion profiles. Selected results have been verified experimentally
Post-radiation sciatic neuropathy: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Post-radiation peripheral neuropathy has been reported in brachial and cervical plexuses and the femoral nerve.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe a patient who developed post-radiation sciatic neuropathy after approximately 3 years and discuss the pathophysiology, clinical course and treatment options available for the deleterious effects of radiation to peripheral nerves.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first case of post-radiation involvement of the sciatic nerve reported in the literature.</p
Use of a Distal Radius Endoprosthesis Following Resection of a Bone Tumour: A Case Report
Limited literature is available on the reconstruction of the distal radius using prosthetic replacement following resection of a bone tumour. We present the first reported case, in the English literature, of the use of an entirely metal endoprosthesis for the reconstruction of the distal radius. This case involves a 66-year-old male who was treated for giant cell tumour of the distal radius with surgical excision of the lesion and replacement of the defect using a predominantly titanium endoprosthesis. He was followed-up for 56 months following surgery and had a good functional outcome with no associated pain or complications. We propose that the use of a primarily titanium endoprosthesis for the reconstruction of a bone defect of the distal radius is a suitable alternative, providing good function of the forearm with satisfactory range of movement at the wrist and adequate pain relief
AgBioData consortium recommendations for sustainable genomics and genetics databases for agriculture
The future of agricultural research depends on data. The sheer volume of agricultural biological data being produced today makes excellent data management essential. Governmental agencies, publishers and science funders require data management plans for publicly funded research. Furthermore, the value of data increases exponentially when they are properly stored, described, integrated and shared, so that they can be easily utilized in future analyses. AgBioData (https://www.agbiodata.org) is a consortium of people working at agricultural biological databases, data archives and knowledgbases who strive to identify common issues in database development, curation and management, with the goal of creating database products that are more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. We strive to promote authentic, detailed, accurate and explicit communication between all parties involved in scientific data. As a step toward this goal, we present the current state of biocuration, ontologies, metadata and persistence, database platforms, programmatic (machine) access to data, communication and sustainability with regard to data curation. Each section describes challenges and opportunities for these topics, along with recommendations and best practices
Effects of arterial cannulation stress on regional cerebral blood flow in major depressive disorder
Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) display abnormal neurophysiological responses to psychological stress but little is known about their neurophysiological responses to physiological stressors. Using [15O-H2O] positron emission tomography we assessed whether the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) response to arterial cannulation differed between patients with MDD and healthy controls (HCs). Fifty-one MDD patients and 62 HCs were scanned following arterial cannulation and 15 MDD patients and 17 HCs were scanned without arterial cannulation. A region-of-interest analysis showed that a significantly increased rCBF of the anterior cingulate cortex and right amygdala was associated with arterial cannulation in MDD. A whole brain analysis showed increased rCBF of the right post-central gyrus, left temporopolar cortex, and right amygdala during arterial cannulation in MDD patients. The rCBF in the right amygdala was significantly correlated with depression severity. Conceivably, the limbic response to invasive physical stress is greater in MDD subjects than in HCs
