An oath is declared to be the calling upon God to witness that what is said by the person sworn is true. It includes an affirmation and embraces every method whereby the conscience of a witness is obligated to testify to the truth. The contents of an oath may vary according to the conditions existing at the time the person is sworn. Generally speaking no particular form of words is necessary. In many instances, however, the Ohio code provides what the oath shall contain. These provisions are mandatory and the language of the statute must be strictly adhered to

Interview of William F. Burns, Major General USA (retired)

Major General William F. Burns (b. 1932 in Scranton PA and d. 2021 in Carlisle, PA) grew up in a number of places during the time of the great depression and spent much of his childhood living in the greater Philadelphia area. General Burns attended middle school, high school, and college in Philadelphia. He attended La Salle College High School and La Salle College (now La Salle University), graduating from La Salle in 1954. He was part of the ROTC during college and joined the Army after graduation around the time that he married his wife to whom he is still married. General Burns went on to serve as a diplomat to the Soviet Union during the cold war, and participated in the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) talks as the chief U.S. diplomat. Among other notable highlights of his career, General Burns served as the director of the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency from 1988 to 1989 and served as the first U. S. special envoy to denuclearization talks with various former Soviet Socialist Republics. General Burns spoke extensively about his early life and college years, which covered material of biographical and cultural interest. Topics touched upon in the concluding sections of the interview deal with his later career. Interview of William F. Burns, Major General USA

General Burns (1932-2021) was enrolled in La Salle University\u27s Army ROTC program. Burns was the first distinguished ROTC graduate in school history. He commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in 1954. From there, General Burns began his military career, which include, posts at: Fort Bragg, Fort Sill, United States Army War College, Princeton University and Germany. He retired in 1988 as a Major General in the United States Army. President Reagan nominated Gen Burns as the Director for Arms Control Agency in 1988. During this time he spent countless hours negotiating arms control with the Soviets for example, in Geneva. In his later years he served on advisory committees such as being a member of La Salle\u27s Board of Trustees. At the time of the interview, he resided in Carlisle, PA, where he had lived for twenty years

Gendered nationalism : the gender gap in support for the Scottish National Party

Recent major surveys of the Scottish electorate and of Scottish National Party (SNP) members have revealed a distinct gender gap in support for the party. Men are markedly more likely than women to vote for the SNP and they comprise more than two-thirds of its membership. In this article, we use data from those surveys to test various possible explanations for the disproportionately male support for the SNP. While popular accounts have focused on the gendered appeal of recent leaders and on the party’s fluctuating efforts at achieving gender equality in its parliamentary representation, we find much stronger support for a different explanation. Women are less inclined to support and to join the SNP because they are markedly less supportive of its central objective of independence for Scotland. Since men and women barely differ in their reported national identities, the origins of this gender gap in support for independence presents a puzzle for further research

Hawaiʻi Coral Disease database (HICORDIS):species-specific coral health data from across the Hawaiian archipelago

AbstractThe Hawaiʻi Coral Disease database (HICORDIS) houses data on colony-level coral health condition observed across the Hawaiian archipelago, providing information to conduct future analyses on coral reef health in an era of changing environmental conditions. Colonies were identified to the lowest taxonomic classification possible (species or genera), measured and assessed for visual signs of health condition. Data were recorded for 286,071 coral colonies surveyed on 1819 transects at 660 sites between 2005 and 2015. The database contains observations for 60 species from 22 genera with 21 different health conditions. The goals of the HICORDIS database are to: i) provide open access, quality controlled and validated coral health data assembled from disparate surveys conducted across Hawaiʻi; ii) facilitate appropriate crediting of data; and iii) encourage future analyses of coral reef health. In this article, we describe and provide data from the HICORDIS database. The data presented in this paper were used in the research article “Satellite SST-based Coral Disease Outbreak Predictions for the Hawaiian Archipelago” (Caldwell et al., 2016) [1]
