Optimal Strategies for Sinusoidal Signal Detection
We derive and study optimal and nearly-optimal strategies for the detection
of sinusoidal signals hidden in additive (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) noise.
Such strategies are an essential part of algorithms for the detection of the
gravitational Continuous Wave
(CW) signals produced by pulsars. Optimal strategies are derived for the case
where the signal phase is not known and the product of the signal frequency and

Waveforms for Gravitational Radiation from Cosmic String Loops
We obtain general formulae for the plus- and cross- polarized waveforms of
gravitational radiation emitted by a cosmic string loop in transverse,
traceless (synchronous, harmonic) gauge. These equations are then specialized
to the case of piecewise linear loops, and it is shown that the general
waveform for such a loop is a piecewise linear function. We give several simple
examples of the waveforms from such loops. We also discuss the relation between
the gravitational radiation by a smooth loop and by a piecewise linear

A chi-squared time-frequency discriminator for gravitational wave detection
Searches for known waveforms in gravitational wave detector data are often
done using matched filtering. When used on real instrumental data, matched
filtering often does not perform as well as might be expected, because
non-stationary and non-Gaussian detector noise produces large spurious filter
outputs (events). This paper describes a chi-squared time-frequency test which
is one way to discriminate such spurious events from the events that would be
produced by genuine signals. The method works well only for broad-band signals.
The case where the filter template does not exactly match the signal waveform
is also considered, and upper bounds are found for the expected value of

Site and mechanism of enhanced gastrointestinal absorption of aluminum by citrate
Site and mechanism of enhanced gastrointestinal absorption of aluminum by citrate. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that citrate markedly enhances the intestinal absorption of aluminum (Al), but the site and mechanism of enhanced absorption are unknown. To determine where in the gastrointestinal tract aluminum citrate (Alcitr) was absorbed, Alcitr was gavaged with D-[1-3H] glucose in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Plasma Al levels increased rapidly and simultaneously peaked with D-[1-3G] glucose, suggesting early proximal bowel absorption. In in vitro duodenal and jejunal everted gut preparations, Alcitr incubation resulted in increased tissue Al levels and markedly enhanced transmural transport of Al and citr. Unlike citr, the transmural movement of Al was independent of temperature (37°C vs. 4°C). On the other hand, Al lactate (al Lac) increased tissue associated Al levels but had no effect on transmural Al movement. To determine if this large flux of Al following Alcitr administration was due to paracellular movement, ruthenium red and Ussing chamber studies were used to evaluate the morphologic and functional integrity of cellular tight junctions. Alcitr, as opposed to A1C13, markedly increased ruthenium red deposits in intercellular spaces, especially around goblet cells, and induced a prolonged significant reduction in transmural resistance. Alcitr also resulted in rapid and nearly complete (99.7%) chelation of free calcium, an event known to disrupt cellular tight junction integrity. Taken together, these data suggest that enhanced Al absorption following administration of Alcitr occurs in the proximal bowel via the paracellular pathway due to the opening of cellular tight junctions
Chemical Abundance Study of One Red Giant Star in NGC 5694 : A Globular Cluster with Dwarf Spheroidals' Chemical Signature?
We report the abundance analysis of one red giant branch star in the
metal-poor outer halo globular cluster NGC 5694. We obtain [Fe/H] = -1.93,
based on the ionized lines, and our metallicity measurement is in good
agreement with previous estimates. We find that [Ca+Ti/2Fe] and [Cu/Fe] of NGC
5694 are about 0.3 -- 0.4 dex lower than other globular clusters with similar
metallicities, but similar to some LMC clusters and stars in some dwarf
spheroidal galaxies. Differences persist, however, in the abundances of neutron
capture elements. The unique chemical abundance pattern and the large
Galactocentric distance (30 kpc) and radial velocity (-138.6 +/- 1.0 km/sec)
indicate that NGC 5694 had an extragalactic origin.Comment: ApJL accepte

14C-Cobalamin Absorption from Endogenously Labeled Chicken Eggs Assessed in Humans Using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry.
Traditionally, the bioavailability of vitamin B-12 (B12) from in vivo labeled foods was determined by labeling the vitamin with radiocobalt (57Co, 58Co or 60Co). This required use of penetrating radioactivity and sometimes used higher doses of B12 than the physiological limit of B12 absorption. The aim of this study was to determine the bioavailability and absorbed B12 from chicken eggs endogenously labeled with 14C-B12 using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). 14C-B12 was injected intramuscularly into hens to produce eggs enriched in vivo with the 14C labeled vitamin. The eggs, which provided 1.4 to 2.6 μg of B12 (~1.1 kBq) per serving, were scrambled, cooked and fed to 10 human volunteers. Baseline and post-ingestion blood, urine and stool samples were collected over a one-week period and assessed for 14C-B12 content using AMS. Bioavailability ranged from 13.2 to 57.7% (mean 30.2 ± 16.4%). Difference among subjects was explained by dose of B12, with percent bioavailability from 2.6 μg only half that from 1.4 μg. The total amount of B12 absorbed was limited to 0.5-0.8 μg (mean 0.55 ± 0.19 μg B12) and was relatively unaffected by the amount consumed. The use of 14C-B12 offers the only currently available method for quantifying B12 absorption in humans, including food cobalamin absorption. An egg is confirmed as a good source of B12, supplying approximately 20% of the average adult daily requirement (RDA for adults = 2.4 μg/day)
Coexistence Curve Singularities at Critical End Points
We report an extensive Monte Carlo study of critical end point behaviour in a
symmetrical binary fluid mixture. On the basis of general scaling arguments,
singular behaviour is predicted in the diameter of the liquid-gas coexistence
curve as the critical end point is approached. The simulation results show
clear evidence for this singularity, as well as confirming a previously
predicted singularity in the coexistence chemical potential. Both singularities

SMAD transcription factors are altered in cell models of HD and regulate HTT expression
Transcriptional dysregulation is observable in multiple animal and cell models of Huntington's disease, as well as in human blood and post-mortem caudate. This contributes to HD pathogenesis, although the exact mechanism by which this occurs is unknown. We therefore utilised a dynamic model in order to determine the differential effect of growth factor stimulation on gene expression, to highlight potential alterations in kinase signalling pathways that may be in part responsible for the transcriptional dysregulation observed in HD, and which may reveal new therapeutic targets. We demonstrate that cells expressing mutant huntingtin have a dysregulated transcriptional response to epidermal growth factor stimulation, and identify the transforming growth factor-beta pathway as a novel signalling pathway of interest that may regulate the expression of the Huntingtin (HTT) gene itself.
