Advances in Preventive Therapy for Estrogen-Receptor-Negative Breast Cancer.
Preventing breast cancer is an effective strategy for reducing breast cancer deaths. The purpose of chemoprevention (also termed preventive therapy) is to reduce cancer incidence by use of natural, synthetic, or biological agents. The efficacy of tamoxifen, raloxifene, and exemestane as preventive therapy against estrogen-receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer is well established for women at increased risk for breast cancer. However, because breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, distinct preventive approaches may be required for effective prevention of each subtype. Current research is, therefore, focused on identifying alternative mechanisms by which biologically active compounds can reduce the risk of all breast cancer subtypes including ER-negative breast cancer. Promising agents are currently being developed for prevention of HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and include inhibitors of the ErbB family receptors, COX-2 inhibitors, metformin, retinoids, statins, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors, and natural compounds. This review focuses on recent progress in research to develop more effective preventive agents, in particular for prevention of ER-negative breast cancer
Entanglement and Relativity
In this paper we survey, in an elementary fashion, some of the questions that
arise when one considers how entanglement and relativity are related via the
notion of non-locality. We begin by reviewing the role of entangled states in
Bell inequality violation and question whether the associated notions of
non-locality lead to problems with relativity. The use of entanglement and
wavefunction collapse in Einstein's famous incompleteness argument is then
considered, before we go on to see how the issue of non-locality is transformed
if one considers quantum mechanics without collapse to be a complete theory, as
in the Everett interpretation. The opportunity is taken to consider whether
teleportation and dense coding might constitute a source of non-locality within

The Formation of High-Mass Black Holes in Low Mass X-ray Binaries
In this note we suggest that high-mass black holes; i.e., black holes of
several solar masses, can be formed in binaries with low-mass main-sequence
companions, provided that the hydrogen envelope of the massive star is removed
in common envelope evolution which begins only after the massive star has
finished He core burning. That is, the massive star is in the supergiant stage,
which lasts only years, so effects of mass loss by He winds are
small. Since the removal of the hydrogen envelope of the massive star occurs so
late, it evolves essentially as a single star, rather than one in a binary.
Thus, we can use evolutionary calculations of Woosley & Weaver (1995) of single
stars. We find that the black holes in transient sources can be formed from
stars with ZAMS masses in the interval 20-35\msun. The black hole mass is
only slightly smaller than the He core mass, typically \sim 7\msun.Comment: 19 pages, substantial changes, accepted in New Astronom
The analysis of user behaviour of a network management training tool using a neural network
A novel method for the analysis and interpretation of data that describes the interaction between trainee network managers and a network management training tool is presented. A simulation based approach is currently being used to train network managers, through the use of a simulated network. The motivation is to provide a tool for exposing trainees to a life like situation without disrupting a live network. The data logged by this system describes the detailed interaction between trainee network manager and simulated network. The work presented here provides an analysis of this interaction data that enables an assessment of the capabilities of the trainee network manager as well as an understanding of how the network management tasks are being approached. A neural network architecture is implemented in order to perform an exploratory data analysis of the interaction data. The neural network employs a novel form of continuous self-organisation to discover key features in the data and thus provide new insights into the learning and teaching strategies employed
Evolution and Merging of Binaries with Compact Objects
In the light of recent observations in which short gamma-ray bursts are
interpreted as arising from black-hole(BH), neutron-star(NS) or NS-NS mergings
we would like to review our research on the evolution of compact binaries,
especially those containing NS's. These were carried out with predictions for
LIGO in mind, but are directly applicable to short gamma-ray bursts in the
interpretation above.
Most important in our review is that we show that the standard scenario for
evolving NS-NS binaries always ends up with a low-mass BH (LMBH), NS binary.
Bethe and Brown (1998) showed that this fate could be avoided if the two giants
in the progenitor binary burned He at the same time, and that in this way the
binary could avoid the common envelope evolution of the NS with red giant
companion which sends the first born NS into a BH in the standard scenario. The
burning of He at the same time requires, for the more massive giants such as
the progenitors of the Hulse-Taylor binary NS that the two giants be within 4%
of each other in ZAMS mass. Applying this criterion to all binaries results in
a factor 5 of LMBH-NS binaries as compared with NS-NS binaries.
Our scenario of NS-NS binaries as having been preceded by a double He-star
binary is collecting observational support in terms of the nearly equal NS
