Elliptic flow contribution to two-particle correlations at different orientations to the reaction plane

Collective anisotropic particle flow, a general phenomenon present in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, can be separated from direct particle-particle correlations of different physics origin by virtue of its specific azimuthal pattern. We provide expressions for flow-induced two-particle azimuthal correlations, if one of the particles is detected under fixed directions with respect to the reaction plane. We consider an ideal case when the reaction plane angle is exactly known, as well as present the general expressions in case of finite event-plane resolution. We foresee applications for the study of generic two-particle correlations at large transverse momentum originating from jet fragmentation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published as Rapid Communications in Phys.Rev.C Re-submit paper to with small improvements in text for better understanding, some minor changes in notation, and correcting one formula where a summation was forgotten. Jet Correlations of Identified Particles in PHENIX

Azimuthal two particle correlations at intermediate pTp_{T} with one of the particles identified have been measured at PHENIX. Trigger (2.5<pT<4.0GeV/c2.5 < p_{T} < 4.0 GeV/c) baryons and mesons show little significant difference in the number of associated particles (1.7<pT<2.5GeV/c1.7 < p_{T} < 2.5 GeV/c) independent of centrality. For inclusive hadron triggers with 2.5<pT<4.0GeV/c2.5 < p_{T} < 4.0 GeV/c, associated fragmentation particles with 1.0<pT<2.5GeV/c1.0 < p_{T} < 2.5 GeV/c show a higher baryon to meson ratio on the away side.Comment: talk given at Quark Matter 2004, 4 pages 4 figur

High pT correlations with strange particles in STAR

We present the highlights of the current identified strange particles DeltaPhi and DeltaEta correlations analyses, including system-size and trigger-pT of the jet and ridge, jet, ridge and away-side meson/baryon ratios, and the current state of the multi-strange baryon analysis. We see clear azimuthal peaks of comparable strength for all strange baryons and K0-short mesons. We see no observable species dependence on the same-side jet or ridge yields as a function of pT. However, while the away side and the ridge have Lambda to K0-short ratio similar to that of the bulk, the jet-only ratio is similar to that in p+pp+p. The implications of these findings on current in-medium jet theoretical explanations are discussed.Comment: Proceedings for the Strangeness in Quark Matter 2007 Conference in Levoca, Slovaki

    Physics Revealed at Intermediate p_T

A review is given on the subject of hadron production at intermediate pTp_T in heavy-ion collisions. The underlying dynamical processes are inferred from interpreting the data in the framework of recombination. Ridge formation with or without triggers is found to play an important role in nearly all observables in that pTp_T region. Correlation data would be hard to interpret without taking ridges into account. The semi-hard partons that create the ridges may even be able to drive elliptic flow without fast thermalization.Comment: 8 pages, plenary talk given at Quark Matter 2008, Jaipur, Indi

Energy and system dependence of high-pTp_T triggered two-particle near-side correlations

Previous studies have indicated that the near-side peak of high-pTp_T triggered correlations can be decomposed into two parts, the \textit{Jet} and the \textit{Ridge}. We present data on the yield per trigger of the \textit{Jet} and the \textit{Ridge} from d+Aud+Au, Cu+CuCu+Cu and Au+AuAu+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV and compare data on the \textit{Jet} to PYTHIA 8.1 simulations for p+pp+p. PYTHIA describes the \textit{Jet} component up to a scaling factor, meaning that PYTHIA can provide a better understanding of the \textit{Ridge} by giving insight into the effects of the kinematic cuts. We present collision energy and system dependence of the \textit{Ridge} yield, which should help distinguish models for the production mechanism of the \textit{Ridge}.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, proceedings for Hot Quarks in Estes Park, Colorad

STAR Results on High Transverse Momentum, Heavy Flavor and Electromagnetic Probes

We summarize here recent results from the STAR collaboration focusing on processes involving large momentum transfers. Measurements of angular correlations of di-hadrons are explored in both the pseudorapidity (eta) and azimuthal (phi) projections. In central Au+Au, an elongated structure is found in the eta projection which persists up to the highest measured pT. After quantifying the particle yield in this structure and subtracting it from the near-side yield, we observe that the remainder exhibits a behavior strikingly similar to that of the near-side yield in d+Au. For heavy flavor production, using electron-hadron correlations in p+p collisions, we obtain an estimate of the b-quark contribution to the non-photonic electrons in the pT region 3-6 GeV/c, and find it consistent with FONLL calculations. Together with the observed suppression of non-photonic electrons in Au+Au, this strongly suggests suppression of b-quark production in Au+Au collisions. We discuss results on the mid-rapidity Upsilon cross-section in p+p collisions. Finally, we present a proof-of-principle measurement of photon-hadron correlations in p+p collisions, paving the way for the tomographic study of the matter produced in central Au+Au via gamma-jet measurements.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Understanding jet quenching and medium response with di-hadron correlation

A brief review of the pTp_T dependence of the dihadron correlations from RHIC is presented. We attempt to construct a consistent picture that can describe the data as a whole, focusing on the following important aspects, 1) the relation between jet fragmentation of survived jet and medium response to quenched jets, 2) the possible origin of the medium response and its relation to intermediate pTp_T physics for single hadron production, 3) the connection between the near-side ridge and away-side cone, 4) and their relations to low energy results.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, presented at the 20th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, "Quark Matter 2008", Jaipur, India, February 4-10, 2008. Recent high pT measurements in STAR

After five years of data taking, the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory provides precise measurements of particle production at high transverse momentum in p-p, d-Au, and Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. We review recent results on the flavor dependence of high pT particle suppression and hadron particle spectra at sqrt(s) = 62.4 GeV. New results on two-particle angular correlations for identified trigger particles and for low momentum associated charged hadrons in p-p and Au-Au as well as near-side Δη\Delta\eta correlations will be presented and discussed.Comment: 5th International Conference on Physics and Astrophysics of Quark Gluon Plasma, Calcutta. 8 pages, 10 figures, submitted to J.
