Relativistic Heavy--Ion Collisions in the Dynamical String--Parton Model
We develop and extend the dynamical string parton model. This model, which is
based on the salient features of QCD, uses classical Nambu-Got\=o strings with
the endpoints identified as partons, an invariant string breaking model of the
hadronization process, and interactions described as quark-quark interactions.
In this work, the original model is extended to include a phenomenological
quantization of the mass of the strings, an analytical technique for treating
the incident nucleons as a distribution of string configurations determined by
the experimentally measured structure function, the inclusion of the gluonic
content of the nucleon through the introduction of purely gluonic strings, and
the use of a hard parton-parton interaction taken from perturbative QCD
combined with a phenomenological soft interaction. The limited number of
parameters in the model are adjusted to and -- data. Utilizing
these parameters, the first calculations of the model for -- and
-- collisions are presented and found to be in reasonable agreement with

Spallation reactions. A successful interplay between modeling and applications
The spallation reactions are a type of nuclear reaction which occur in space
by interaction of the cosmic rays with interstellar bodies. The first
spallation reactions induced with an accelerator took place in 1947 at the
Berkeley cyclotron (University of California) with 200 MeV deuterons and 400
MeV alpha beams. They highlighted the multiple emission of neutrons and charged
particles and the production of a large number of residual nuclei far different
from the target nuclei. The same year R. Serber describes the reaction in two
steps: a first and fast one with high-energy particle emission leading to an
excited remnant nucleus, and a second one, much slower, the de-excitation of
the remnant. In 2010 IAEA organized a worskhop to present the results of the
most widely used spallation codes within a benchmark of spallation models. If
one of the goals was to understand the deficiencies, if any, in each code, one
remarkable outcome points out the overall high-quality level of some models and
so the great improvements achieved since Serber. Particle transport codes can
then rely on such spallation models to treat the reactions between a light
particle and an atomic nucleus with energies spanning from few tens of MeV up
to some GeV. An overview of the spallation reactions modeling is presented in
order to point out the incomparable contribution of models based on basic
physics to numerous applications where such reactions occur. Validations or
benchmarks, which are necessary steps in the improvement process, are also
addressed, as well as the potential future domains of development. Spallation

Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration
Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were
recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of
RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy,
yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse
momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical
fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results
are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state
of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be

Anesthetic management of a patient with a double inferior vena cava and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis who underwent bilateral living-donor lobar lung transplantation.
A 43-year-old woman with pulmonary fibrosis secondary to pulmonary alveolar proteinosis was scheduled to undergo lung transplantation. Before the lung transplantation, she had undergone multiple whole-lung lavage procedures on extracorporeal circulation (ECC), which had caused scarring of the right femoral subcutaneous tissues. Preoperative examination revealed a double inferior vena cava (IVC) with interiliac communication, and the left IVC ended at the left renal vein. Surgical exposure of the right femoral vessels was performed immediately after anesthetic induction for emergent vascular access to establish an ECC. Cardiopulmonary collapse did not occur and the ECC was not required until lung resection. The lung transplantation was completed uneventfully. Congenital IVC anomaly is rare, but may make cannulation through the femoral vein difficult. Scarring of the subcutaneous tissue could result in a difficult "percutaneous" approach to the vessels. Evaluation of the vascular anatomy related to the establishment of an ECC is important before lung transplantation
A Historiometric Examination of Machiavellianism and a New Taxonomy of Leadership
Although researchers have extensively examined the relationship between charismatic leadership and Machiavellianism (Deluga, 2001; Gardner & Avolio, 1995; House & Howell, 1992), there has been a lack of investigation of Machiavellianism in relation to alternative forms of outstanding leadership. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between Machiavellianism and a new taxonomy of outstanding leadership comprised of charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic leaders. Using an historiometric approach, raters assessed Machiavellianism via the communications of 120 outstanding leaders in organizations across the domains of business, political, military, and religious institutions. Academic biographies were used to assess twelve general performance measures as well as twelve general controls and five communication specific controls. The results indicated that differing levels of Machiavellianism is evidenced across the differing leader types as well as differing leader orientation. Additionally, Machiavellianism appears negatively related to performance, though less so when type and orientation are taken into account.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Representational predicaments for employees: Their impact on perceptions of supervisors\u27 individualized consideration and on employee job satisfaction
A representational predicament for a subordinate vis-à-vis his or her immediate superior involves perceptual incongruence with the superior about the subordinate\u27s work or work context, with unfavourable implications for the employee. An instrument to measure the incidence of two types of representational predicament, being neglected and negative slanting, was developed and then validated through an initial survey of 327 employees. A subsequent substantive survey with a fresh sample of 330 employees largely supported a conceptual model linking being neglected and negative slanting to perceptions of low individualized consideration by superiors and to low overall job satisfaction. The respondents in both surveys were all Hong Kong Chinese. Two case examples drawn from qualitative interviews illustrate and support the conceptual model. Based on the research findings, we recommend some practical exercises to use in training interventions with leaders and subordinates. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Maize Histone H2B-mCherry: A New Fluorescent Chromatin Marker for Somatic and Meiotic Chromosome Research
Cytological studies of fluorescent proteins are rapidly yielding insights into chromatin structure and dynamics. Here we describe the production and cytological characterization of new transgenic maize lines expressing a fluorescent histone fusion protein, H2B-mCherry. The transgene is expressed under the control of the maize ubiquitin1 promoter, including its first exon and intron. Polymerase chain reaction–based genotyping and root-tip microscopy showed that most of the lines carrying the transgene also expressed it, producing bright uniform staining of nuclei. Further, plants showing expression in root tips at the seedling stage also showed expression during meiosis, late in the life cycle. Detailed high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of cells and nuclei from various somatic and meiotic cell types showed that H2B-mCherry produced remarkably clear images of chromatin and chromosome fiber morphology, as seen in somatic, male meiotic prophase, and early microgametophyte cells. H2B-mCherry also yielded distinct nucleolus staining and was shown to be compatible with fluorescence in situ hybridization. We found several instances where H2B-mCherry was superior to DAPI as a generalized chromatin stain. Our study establishes these histone H2B-mCherry lines as new biological reagents for visualizing chromatin structure, chromosome morphology, and nuclear dynamics in fixed and living cells in a model plant genetic system
Evidence for Parapatric Speciation in the Mormyrid Fish, Pollimyrus castelnaui (Boulenger, 1911), from the Okavango–Upper Zambezi River Systems: P. marianne sp. nov., Defined by Electric Organ Discharges, Morphology and Genetics
We report on parapatric speciation in the mormyrid fish,Pollimyrus castelnaui (Boulenger, 1911), from the Okavango and the Upper Zambezi River systems. We recognise samples from the Zambezi River as a distinct species,
P. marianne, displaying an eastern phenotype of electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform (Type 3) that is distinct
from the western EOD phenotype (Type 1) observed in P. castelnaui samples from the neighbouring Okavango.
Samples from the geographically intermediate Kwando/Linyanti River (a tributary of the Zambezi that is also intermittently connected to the Okavango) presented a more variable third EOD phenotype (Type 2). In 13 out of 14
morphological characters studied, the Zambezi River samples differed significantly from P. castelnaui. Morphologically and in EOD characters, the Kwando/Linyanti fish are distinct from both P. castelnaui and P. marianne.
Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene unambiguously reveals that specimens from the Zambezi
River System form a well supported taxon which clearly differs from P. castelnaui from the Okavango (1.5–2.5%
sequence divergence).Within specimens from theKwando–Zambezi System some geographic differentiation can be
detected (nucleotide substitutions up to 0.6%); but groups cannot be resolved with certainty. Significant allozyme
differences were found between the Okavango and all other EOD types from the Upper Zambezi System, and, within the Zambezi System, between the Kwando (Type 2) and Zambezi (Type 3) individuals. The low Wright’s fixation index values, the lack of fixed allele differences, and small genetic distances provide little evidence for speciation between groups within the Zambezi System, but moderate to great fixation index values and significant allele frequency differences were observed between the Okavango and the other fishes. It is concluded that within
the Zambezi System, differentiation between Kwando/Linyanti and Zambezi populations (as revealed by morphology and EOD waveform comparisons) is so recent that substantial genetic (allozyme and mitochondrial sequence)
differences could not have evolved, or were not detected
