The living environments of community-dwelling older people who become frail: another look at the living standards of older New Zealanders survey.

Efforts to support older people who live in the community and who become frail will be enhanced by a better appreciation of the shared characteristics of this group. This paper reports indicative findings from a re-analysis of the Living Standards of Older New Zealanders survey (Fergusson et al. 2001) about the living conditions of this group in terms of their household arrangements, their income and standard of living, their housing situation, issues they face in terms of mobility and transport, and their social connectedness. Findings suggest a higher prevalence of frailty among older people with lower income levels and wealth, less secure housing, limitations to mobility, and with less frequent social contact. Disadvantage in these areas reduces the ability of the older person to adjust to their living environment, affecting the potential for recovery and the maintenance of wellbeing. Such disadvantage may well be amenable to social policy amelioration and is worthy of consideration by policy makers

The War of 1812: The End of an Uncommon Alliance

The War of 1812 was a struggle between three groups: Americans, British, and Native Americans. The British and the Native Americans were brought together in their necessity to fight the Americans. The alliance began during the French and Indian War while defeating the French. Throughout the rest of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century the British and Natives would support each other in a mutually beneficial alliance. The end of the War of 1812 would also be the end of the once great alliance

Ukraine at the Crossroad in Post-Communist Europe: Policymaking and the Role of Foreign Actors

As the mounting protests from Maidan Square in Kyiv led to the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovich, Ukrainians found themselves at an unavoidable fork in the road in their history. For years the country had become a new frontier of Western influence, forcing a decision between tightening economic and cultural ties with Western countries or with Russia. The basic question many Ukrainians now faced included choosing between their Soviet past or a potential liberal democratic future. Furthermore, the Russian takeover of Crimea became the first major invasion of a European country since 1968. This military maneuver stunned the international community and precipitated radically new relations between Western states and Russia. From an academic perspective, modern Ukraine presents an excellent case to study in political science an international relations. This country and the recent events that have taken place there, lends itself to an almost infinite number of research questions on post-communist development, democratization, marketization, geopolitics, energy politics and foreign influence. The focus of this paper is to examine how Western versus Russian institutions and agents, influence a third actor, Ukraine, in the post-communist world. The following discussion will: 1) address the case of Ukraine within international relations and geopolitics of the region; 2) analyze the different ways in which the two sides exert influence; 3) and how those instruments shape policymaking in four policy areas: reform, economics, energy, and security

ProteinParser:a Community Based Tool for the Generation of a Detailed Protein Consensus and FASTA Output

Comparison of bioinformatic data is a common application in the life sciences and beyond. In this communication, a novel Java based software tool, ProteinParser, is outlined. This soft- ware tool calculates a detailed consensus, or most common, amino acid at a given position in an aligned protein set, whilst also generating a full consensus protein FASTA output. A second application of this software tool, computing a consensus amino acid given a toler- ance threshold, is also demonstrated. The phytase and the common bacterial -lactamase proteins are analysed as ‘proof of concept’ examples. Consensus proteins, as generated by ProteinParser, are regularly utilised in the selection of residues for protein stabilisation muta- genesis; however, this widely applicable software tool will find many alternative applications in areas such as protein homology modelling

Blind insight: metacognitive discrimination despite chance task performance

Blindsight and other examples of unconscious knowledge and perception demonstrate dissociations between judgment accuracy and metacognition: Studies reveal that participants’ judgment accuracy can be above chance while their confidence ratings fail to discriminate right from wrong answers. Here, we demonstrated the opposite dissociation: a reliable relationship between confidence and judgment accuracy (demonstrating metacognition) despite judgment accuracy being no better than chance. We evaluated the judgments of 450 participants who completed an AGL task. For each trial, participants decided whether a stimulus conformed to a given set of rules and rated their confidence in that judgment. We identified participants who performed at chance on the discrimination task, utilizing a subset of their responses, and then assessed the accuracy and the confidence-accuracy relationship of their remaining responses. Analyses revealed above-chance metacognition among participants who did not exhibit decision accuracy. This important new phenomenon, which we term blind insight, poses critical challenges to prevailing models of metacognition grounded in signal detection theory
