    Who brings home the bacon? The influence of context on partners' contributions to the household income

    Background: Female-breadwinner families represent a relatively new phenomenon in Europe. Little is known about the determinants of this couple type, which sensibly diverts from the traditional economic superiority of men within the household.Objective: This paper studies the contextual correlates of partners’ contribution to the household income, distinguishing between female-breadwinner, male-breadwinner, and equal-income couples. In particular, it focuses on the role of male unemployment rate and the prevalence of gender-egalitarian attitudes as possible explanations for the emergence of female-breadwinner and equal-income couples across European regions and countries.Methods: Using data from the fifth round (2010/2011) of the European Social Survey, integrated with data from the Eurostat database, we model the categorical variable identifying the couple type (male-breadwinner, female-breadwinner, or equal-income couple) by using a multilevel multinomial logistic regression model where individuals are nested within regions and countries.Results: The prevalence of female-breadwinner, male-breadwinner, and equal-income couples varies considerably across European countries as well as within countries. The prevalence of female-breadwinner couples is positively associated with male unemployment, while it is not influenced by the diffusion of gender-egalitarian attitudes. However, the diffusion of gender-egalitarian attitudes matters for explaining the variation in the prevalence of equal-income couples across Europe.Contribution: We add to the literature on partners’ contributions to household income by analysing the spatial distribution and the contextual correlates of female-breadwinner, male-breadwinner, and equal-income couples across European countries and regions.<br/

    PIV measurements over a double bladed Darrieus-type vertical axis wind turbine: A validation benchmark

    Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are very attractive for in-home power generation since they can be adopted even at low wind speeds and highly variable wind direction. Even if significant experimental research activity has been carried out to improve VAWTs performance, the ability to accurately reproduce flow field characteristics around turbine blades by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) techniques represents a powerful approach to further enhance wind turbines performance. Thanks to CFD, in fact, it is possible to reproduce flow characteristics with a detail level impossible to achieve by experiments. Nevertheless, in order to appropriately analyze the flow structure by CFD application, an accurate validation is essential, and high-quality measurements of some main flow characteristics are required. In recent publications the authors investigated, both experimentally and numerically, the performance of an innovative double bladed Darrieus-type VAWT, with the aim to define an optimal configuration also focusing on self-starting ability of the prototype by employing CFD technique. Nevertheless, comparison between experiments and numerical results was made only in terms of power and torque coefficient. To overcome such limitation, in this paper the authors propose an experimental benchmark case for CFD results validation, describing detailed flow field in correspondence of one pair of blades of the innovative Darrieus-type VAWT in static conditions. Measurements were performed employing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique on a scaled model of the turbine blades realized by 3D printing. An uncertainty analysis was also performed which showed a high accuracy of the obtained experimental results. The measurements of the main flow characteristics (bi-dimensional velocity components) were then used for a test case CFD validation of two different turbulence model

    Orbital Selective Magnetism in the Spin-Ladder Iron Selenides Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_{x}Fe2_2Se3_3

    Here we show that the 2.80(8) {\mu}B/Fe block antiferromagnetic order of BaFe2Se3 transforms into stripe antiferromagnetic order in KFe2Se3 with a decrease in moment to 2.1(1) {\mu}B/Fe. This reduction is larger than expected from the change in electron count from Ba2+^{2+} to K+^{+}, and occurs with the loss of the displacements of Fe atoms from ideal positions in the ladders, as found by neutron pair distribution function analysis. Intermediate compositions remain insulating, and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a suppression of magnetic order and probable formation of a spin-glass. Together, these results imply an orbital-dependent selection of magnetic versus bonded behavior, driven by relative bandwidths and fillings.Comment: Final versio

    The impact of COVID-19 on fertility plans in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom

    Objective: This study offers a descriptive overview of changes in fertility plans during the COVID-19 crisis in a sample of the young population (18\u201334) in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The data were collected between 27 March and 7 April 2020. Results: Our results show that fertility plans have been negatively revised in all countries, but not in the same way. In Germany and France fertility plans changed moderately, with many people still planning or postponing their decision to have a child. In Italy, however, the proportion of abandoners is much higher than in the other countries, and the proportion of those deciding to postpone their plans is lower. Moreover, across countries the demographic characteristics of individuals appear to be associated with fertility plans in different ways. In Italy, abandoners are common among individuals younger than 30 and those without a tertiary education. In Germany, abandoners are slightly more prevalent in the regions most affected by COVID-19. In the United Kingdom, the individuals that most frequently abandoned their fertility plans are those who expect the crisis to have a dramatic negative effect on their future income. Finally, in France and Spain we do not observe a clear pattern of revision of fertility plans. Contribution: These results suggest that different mechanisms are at work, possibly due to the different economic, demographic, and policy pre-crisis background and post-crisis prospects. Low-fertility contexts in particular appear to be more at risk of a fertility loss due to the crisis

    Non-uniform carrier density in Cd3_3As2_2 evidenced by optical spectroscopy

    We report the detailed optical properties of Cd3_3As2_2 crystals in a wide parameter space: temperature, magnetic field, carrier concentration and crystal orientation. We investigate high-quality crystals synthesized by three different techniques. In all the studied samples, independently of how they were prepared and how they were treated before the optical experiments, our data indicate conspicuous fluctuations in the carrier density (up to 30%). These charge puddles have a characteristic scale of 100 μ\mum, they become more pronounced at low temperatures, and possibly, they become enhanced by the presence of crystal twinning. The Drude response is characterized by very small scattering rates (∼1\sim 1 meV) for as-grown samples. Mechanical treatment, such as cutting or polishing, influences the optical properties of single crystals, by increasing the Drude scattering rate and also modifying the high frequency optical response. Magneto-reflectivity and Kerr rotation are consistent with electron-like charge carriers and a spatially non-uniform carrier density.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review

    Epidural blood patch in Trendelenburg position pre-medicated with acetazolamide to treat spontaneous intracranial hypotension

    Background: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is characterized by orthostatic headache, diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. Treatment ranges from conservative management, such as bed rest, overhydration and caffeine, to invasive procedures, such as the autologous epidural blood patch (EBP), computed tomography (CT)-guided fibrin glue injection at the site of the leak and open surgical intervention. EBP has emerged as the treatment of choice for SIH when initial conservative measures fail to bring relief. Methods: Forty-two patients with SIH were treated with lumbar autologous EBP in Trendelenburg position preceded by pre-medication with acetazolamide. Results: A complete recovery was obtained in all patients after one (90%), two (5%) or three (5%) EBPs. After EBP, two patients (5%) also performed evacuation of bilateral chronic subdural hematoma with mass effect. Conclusions: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension can be effectively cured by lumbar autologous EBP in Trendelenburg position pre-medicated with acetazolamide

    Numerical and Experimental Investigation of the Flow over a Car Prototype for the Shell Eco Marathon

    The Eco-Marathon is a challenge organized by Shell in which student teams compete in designing energy-efficient vehicles. The event spark debate about the future of mobility and inspire engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency. The aim of the present work consists of the numerical and experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance of a Shell Eco Marathon prototype designed by a group of students of the University of Cassino, Italy. The car design has been provided by means of detailed 3D CFD modelling with Comsol Multiphysics®. The numerical tool has been validated against experiments conducted at the Laboratory of Industrial Measurements (LaMI) of the University of Cassino. In particular, a scale model of the car has been investigated in an open chamber wind tunnel by means of the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, for different free stream velocities within the range 11 – 23 m/s. Measurements have been associated to a proper uncertainty analysis. The experimental data has been compared to numerical results obtained employing different turbulence models and the validated numerical tool has been applied to the simulation of the full-scale car model, allowing to analyse the wake flow structures, and estimate the overall drag coefficient

    Observation of a robust and active catalyst for hydrogen evolution under high current densities

    Despite the fruitful achievements in the development of hydrogen production catalysts with record-breaking performances, there is still a lack of durable catalysts that could work under large current densities (>1000 mA cm(−2)). Here, we investigated the catalytic behaviors of Sr(2)RuO(4) bulk single crystals. This crystal has demonstrated remarkable activities under the current density of 1000 mA cm(−2), which require overpotentials of 182 and 278 mV in 0.5 M H(2)SO(4) and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. These materials are stable for 56 days of continuous testing at a high current density of above 1000 mA cm(−2) and then under operating temperatures of 70 °C. The in-situ formation of ferromagnetic Ru clusters at the crystal surface is observed, endowing the single-crystal catalyst with low charge transfer resistance and high wettability for rapid gas bubble removal.
