    A history of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College of the City University of New York

    Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston UniversityThe purpose of this study was to document the history of the Aaron Copland School of Music (ACSM) at Queens College. The ACSM evolved out of the Department of Music at Queens College, established by the Board of Trustees and its first president, Paul Klapper, in 1938, one year after the founding of the college. In 1980, the Department of Music officially became a School of Music and subsequently named the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College of the City University of New York in 1981. In an effort to present an organized chronological history of the institution, I employed historical methodology for the collection, analysis, evaluation, verification, and description of data. Archival research and interviews with former students, and past and present faculty and department heads contributed significantly to the study. Additional data built a holistic picture, helping in the analysis of the reports and views of participants. Since there is no prevwus comprehensive historical documentation of the ACSM, it was necessary to examine source items such as Queens College and Copland School of Music records, manuscripts, college bulletins, newspapers, memoirs, and concert programs. Additionally, I examined other items from several archival collections to explain how and why the School of Music originated, as well as prevailing factors that contributed to its growth. Further, the study examines the role of curricula, personnel, facilities, and activities relevant to its development. The history of the ACSM reflects the development of other music schools in higher education in that it has and continues to develop musicians and provides diverse collaborative efforts with the community. A history of the Aaron Copland School of Music is both desirable and necessary to document fully its unique qualities and successes. In addition to documenting the historical record, this study may prove useful to present and future operations of the School of Music as well as bring new insights into the historical foundations of the college and providing a basis for future research

    Weight management merits attention in women with infertility: A cross-sectional study on the association of anthropometric indices with hormonal imbalance in a Ghanaian population

    OBJECTIVE: This study determined the association of anthropometric indices with hormonal imbalance among infertile women in a Ghanaian population. RESULTS: Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels (18.47 vs. 8.67, p-value = 0.002), and luteinizing hormone (LH) (12.43 vs. 8.01, p-value = 0.044) were higher in women with primary infertility compared with women presenting with secondary infertility. Waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) showed significant negative partial correlation with prolactin in both primary and secondary infertile women. Also a significant negative partial correlation was observed between BMI and prolactin in secondary infertile women only. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) showed a positive association with LH in both primary and secondary infertility. WHR also showed significant positive correlation to LH/FSH ratio in secondary infertility whereas body adiposity index (BAI) showed a negative correlation to LH/FSH ratio. In a correlation analysis of anthropometric measures with hormonal profile and causes of infertility as a fixed factor, the association between anthropometric indices and fertility hormones was largely dependent on the underlying causes of infertility

    Epidemiology, prehospital care and outcomes of patients arriving by ambulance with dyspnoea: An observational study

    Background: This study aimed to determine epidemiology and outcome for patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) with shortness of breath who were transported by ambulance. Methods: This was a planned sub-study of a prospective, interrupted time series cohort study conducted at three time points in 2014 and which included consecutive adult patients presenting to the ED with dyspnoea as a main symptom. For this sub-study, additional inclusion criteria were presentation to an ED in Australia or New Zealand and transport by ambulance. The primary outcomes of interest are the epidemiology and outcome of these patients. Analysis was by descriptive statistics and comparisons of proportions. Results: One thousand seven patients met inclusion criteria. Median age was 74 years (IQR 61-68) and 46.1 % were male. There was a high rate of co-morbidity and chronic medication use. The most common ED diagnoses were lower respiratory tract infection (including pneumonia, 22.7 %), cardiac failure (20.5%) and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (19.7 %). ED disposition was hospital admission (including ICU) for 76.4 %, ICU admission for 5.6 % and death in ED in 0.9 %. Overall in-hospital mortality among admitted patients was 6.5 %. Discussion: Patients transported by ambulance with shortness of breath make up a significant proportion of ambulance caseload and have high comorbidity and high hospital admission rate. In this study, >60 % were accounted for by patients with heart failure, lower respiratory tract infection or COPD, but there were a wide range of diagnoses. This has implications for service planning, models of care and paramedic training. Conclusion: This study shows that patients transported to hospital by ambulance with shortness of breath are a complex and seriously ill group with a broad range of diagnoses. Understanding the characteristics of these patients, the range of diagnoses and their outcome can help inform training and planning of services

    Processes That Contribute to Decreased Dimethyl Sulfide Production in Response to Ocean Acidification in Subtropical Waters

    Long-term time series data show that ocean acidification is occurring in the subtropical oceans. As a component of an in situ mesocosm experiment carried out offGran Canaria in the subtropical North Atlantic, we examined the influence of ocean acidification on the net production of dimethylsulfide (DMS). Over 23 days under oligotrophic conditions, time-integrated DMS concentrations showed an inverse relationship of -0.21 ± 0.02 nmol DMS nmol-1 H+ across the gradient of H+ concentration of 8.8-23.3 nmol l-1, equivalent to a range of pCO2 of 400-1,252 atm. Proportionally similar decreases in the concentrations of both dissolved and particulate dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were observed in relation to increasing H+ concentration between the mesocosms. The reduced net production of DMSP with increased acidity appeared to result from a decrease in abundance of a DMSP-rich nanophytoplankton population. A 35S-DMSP tracer approach was used to determine rates of dissolved DMSP catabolism, including DMS production, across the mesocosm treatments. Over a phase of increasing DMS concentrations during the experiment, the specific rates of DMS production were significantly reduced at elevated H+ concentration. These rates were closely correlated to the rates of net DMS production indicating that transformation of dissolved DMSP to DMS by bacteria was a major component of DMS production. It was not possible to resolve whether catabolism of DMSP was directly influenced by H+ concentrations or was an indirect response in the bacterial community composition associated with reduced DMSP availability. There is a pressing need to understand how subtropical planktonic communities respond to the predicted gradual prolonged ocean acidification, as alterations in the emission of DMS from the vast subtropical oceans could influence atmospheric chemistry and potentially climate, over a large proportion of the Earth's surface

    General framework for fluctuating dynamic density functional theory

    We introduce a versatile bottom-up derivation of a formal theoretical framework to describe (passive) soft-matter systems out of equilibrium subject to fluctuations. We provide a unique connection between the constituent-particle dynamics of real systems and the time evolution equation of their measurable (coarse-grained) quantities, such as local density and velocity. The starting point is the full Hamiltonian description of a system of colloidal particles immersed in a fluid of identical bath particles. Then, we average out the bath via Zwanzig's projection-operator techniques and obtain the stochastic Langevin equations governing the colloidal-particle dynamics. Introducing the appropriate definition of the local number and momentum density fields yields a generalisation of the Dean-Kawasaki (DK) model, which resembles the stochastic Navier-Stokes (NS) description of a fluid. Nevertheless, the DK equation still contains all the microscopic information and, for that reason, does not represent the dynamical law of observable quantities. We address this controversial feature of the DK description by carrying out a nonequilibrium ensemble average. Adopting a natural decomposition into local-equilibrium and nonequilibrium contribution, where the former is related to a generalised version of the canonical distribution, we finally obtain the fluctuating-hydrodynamic equation governing the time-evolution of the mesoscopic density and momentum fields. Along the way, we outline the connection between the ad-hoc energy functional introduced in previous DK derivations and the free-energy functional from classical density-functional theory (DFT). The resultant equation has the structure of a dynamical DFT (DDFT) with an additional fluctuating force coming from the random interactions with the bath. We show that our fluctuating DDFT formalism corresponds to a particular version of the fluctuating NS equations, originally derived by Landau and Lifshitz. Our framework thus provides the formal apparatus for ab-initio derivations of fluctuating DDFT equations capable of describing the dynamics of soft-matter systems in and out of equilibrium. We believe that the derivation offered here represents the current state of the art in the field
