    Effects of Length and Diameter of Open-Ended Coaxial Sensor on its Reflection Coefficient

    This paper presents a calibration technique for a coaxial sensor using a transmission signal approach. The sensor was fabricated from commercially available RG402/U and RG405/U semi-rigid coaxial cable. The length of the coaxial sensor was correlated with the attenuation and standing wave inside the coaxial line. The functions of multiple reflection amplitude and tolerance length with respect to the actual length of coaxial line were empirically formulated using regression analysis.     Electric vehicle battery model identification and state of charge estimation in real world driving cycles

    This paper describes a study demonstrating a new method of state-of-charge (SoC) estimation for batteries in real-world electric vehicle applications. This method combines realtime model identification with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). In the study, investigations were carried down on a small-scale battery pack. An equivalent circuit network model of the pack was developed and validated using pulse-discharge experiments. The pack was then subjected to demands representing realistic WLTP and UDDS driving cycles obtained from a model of a representative electric vehicle, scaled match the size of the battery pack. A fast system identification technique was then used to estimate battery parameter values. One of these, open circuit voltage, was selected as suitable for SoC estimation, and this was used as the input to an ANFIS system which estimated the SoC. The results were verified by comparison to a theoretical Coulomb-counting method, and the new method was judged to be effective. The case study used a small 7.2 V NiMH battery pack, but the method described is applicable to packs of any size or chemistry

Most of the recorded events are expeted to be due to electrons in cosmic ray showers whose core fall at some distance from the detectors. This result is confirmed from a measurement of the frequency distribution of the recorded density ratios of the two scintillators

    Electric vehicle battery parameter identification and SOC observability analysis: NiMH and Li-S case studies

    In this study, a framework is proposed for battery model identification to be applied in electric vehicle energy storage systems. The main advantage of the proposed approach is having capability to handle different battery chemistries. Two case studies are investigated: nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), which is a mature battery technology, and Lithium-Sulphur (Li-S), a promising next-generation technology. Equivalent circuit battery model parametrisation is performed in both cases using the Prediction-Error Minimization (PEM) algorithm applied to experimental data. The use of identified parameters for battery state-of-charge (SOC) estimation is then discussed. It is demonstrated that the set of parameters needed can change with a different battery chemistry. In the case of NiMH, the battery’s open circuit voltage (OCV) is adequate for SOC estimation. However, Li-S battery SOC estimation can be challenging due to the chemistry’s unique features and the SOC cannot be estimated from the OCV-SOC curve alone because of its flat gradient. An observability analysis demonstrates that Li-S battery SOC is not observable using the common state-space representations in the literature. Finally, the problem’s solution is discussed using the proposed framework

    Working memory learning method and astrocytes number in different subfields of rat's Hippocampus

    The aim of this study was evaluation of the astrocytes number in different subfields of rat's Hippocampus after spatial learning with usage of Morris Water Maze technique and working memory method. In this study, between 2005-2006 years in Pasteur institute of Iran-Tehran and histological department of Gorgan University with usage of Morris Water Maze and working memory technique, we used 14 male albino wistar rats. Seventh rats were in control group and 7 rats in working memory group. After histological preparation, the slides were stained with PTAH staining for showing the Astrocytes. Present results showed significant difference in astrocytes number in CA1, CA2 and CA3 areas of hippocampus between control and reference memory group. The number of astrocytes is increased in working memory group. Then we divided the hippocampus to three parts: Anterior, middle and posterior and with compare of different area (CA1, CA2 and CA3) of hippocampus, we found that the differences between Anterior-middle and Middle-Posterior of CA1 and CA2 area of hippocampus were significant, whereas the difference between Anterior-Posterior parts was not significant in CA1 and CA2 areas. In CA3 area, the difference between Anterior-Middle and Anterior-Posterior parts was significant, whereas the difference between middle and posterior parts was not significant. We concluded that the number of astrocytes increased due to spatial learning and working memory technique. © 2008 Science Publications

    Inside the mosque : a study in psychological-type profiling

    Within a Christian context a series of studies has profiled religious participation as associated with introversion rather than extraversion and with feeling rather than thinking. The most frequently occurring type in church congregation is ISFJ. In the present study data provided by 48 participants in the mosque demonstrate that within a Muslim context religious participation is associated with extraversion rather than introversion and with thinking rather than feeling. The most frequently occurring types in the mosque are extraversion, sensing, thinking, and judging and ENTJ. These data caution against generalising findings about the connection between personality and religion from one religious tradition to another

    On the existence of chaotic circumferential waves in spinning disks

    We use a third-order perturbation theory and Melnikov's method to prove the existence of chaos in spinning circular disks subject to a lateral point load. We show that the emergence of transverse homoclinic and heteroclinic points respectively lead to a random reversal in the traveling direction of circumferential waves and a random phase shift of magnitude π\pi for both forward and backward wave components. These long-term phenomena occur in imperfect low-speed disks sufficiently far from fundamental resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to appear in CHAOS (Volume 17, Issue 2, June 2007

    Kalman-variant estimators for state of charge in lithium-sulfur batteries

    Lithium-sulfur batteries are now commercially available, offering high specific energy density, low production costs and high safety. However, there is no commercially-available battery management system for them, and there are no published methods for determining state of charge in situ. This paper describes a study to address this gap. The properties and behaviours of lithium-sulfur are briefly introduced, and the applicability of ‘standard’ lithium-ion state-of-charge estimation methods is explored. Open-circuit voltage methods and ‘Coulomb counting’ are found to have a poor fit for lithium-sulfur, and model-based methods, particularly recursive Bayesian filters, are identified as showing strong promise. Three recursive Bayesian filters are implemented: an extended Kalman filter (EKF), an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and a particle filter (PF). These estimators are tested through practical experimentation, considering both a pulse-discharge test and a test based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Experimentation is carried out at a constant temperature, mirroring the environment expected in the authors' target automotive application. It is shown that the estimators, which are based on a relatively simple equivalent-circuit–network model, can deliver useful results. If the three estimators implemented, the unscented Kalman filter gives the most robust and accurate performance, with an acceptable computational effort
