Protocol analysis as widely used method for analyzing design activities has limitation since the result might be different by coding system and researchers. As new methods and system to investigate cognitive behaviour during design activities in real-time such as EEG, fMRI, PET are developed, the empirical researches to explore human information processing in various fields are increasing. Most of researches using EEG(electroencephalography) in design have focused on how people perceive and react the design objects. Researches to investigate cognitive attitude in accordance with information types and the differences of cognitive behaviour in information processing comparing to other disciplines. The information which designers should deal with in design process is getting various and complex. This study aims to inquire the relationship between majors and information types. It is possible to understand and explain discontinuity of design process and error and confusion in design communication through investigation of differences of creative process of information processing according to majors. Through comparison with characteristics of information processing of engineering major and art & humanity major. This study gives clue to explain characteristics of cognitive attitude of โ€˜designerโ€™, and find differentiation of cognitive attitude for designers. The main them of this study is to measure and compare brain wave of art&humanity, engineering, design major subjects(30 persons) when they perform text-centered task, number-centered task, and image-centered task. Three-major subjects are asked to solve three different information type tasks, and brain waves of them during experiment are measured and recorded. Subjects are asked to answer test of verbal capability, numerical-logical capability, and visual-artistic capability, and to evaluate the difficulty of three tasks. Brain waves of subjects are measured at 8 points of brain (prefrontal lobe, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe). The measured value of brain waves are converted into power spectrum value, and values are analyzed with relative beta, relative gamma, concentration index, and cognitive load index(SEF 95%). Differences of brain wave index in accordance with major and information types are verified through experiment. Correlation of major and specific information types are partially identified. This correlation is shown clearly at number-centered task and the difference is little at text-centered task. While art&humanities major subjects who are highly trained with text show low brain wave index at text-centered task, engineering major subjects who practice numerical formula record low brain wave index at number-centered task. Although design major subjects are well-trained with visual information, brain wave index at image-centered task is high which does not accord with correlation of major and information types verified at engineering major and art&humanities major subjects. Since the value of aptitude test of subjects and the difficulties of tasks are in sufficient for reliability of research, the difference in accordance with score of aptitude test and difficulties of tasks are not identified. Major characteristics of cognitive attitude of designers according to information types are found. First design major subjects have inclination to take information visually regardless types. Design major subjects show relatively high brain wave index at prefrontal lobe which are activated with unfamiliar and difficult task at image-centered task, even they are well trained with image. Second design major subjects show higher brain wave index than subjects of art&humanities major and engineering major regarding to text information and numerical information. Especially design major subjects reveal sensitive attitude for numerical information with statistically meaningful difference. Third design major subjects have higher brain index in all kinds of information types comparing to art&humanities major and engineering major, which means positive and creative approach of design major subjects for problem solving. ํ•˜๋Š”๋ฐ ๋งค์šฐ ํ•„์š”ํ•œ A Study on Characteristics of Information Processing of Designer by Brain Wave Comparison of Design, Art & Humanities and Engineering Major

The study to explore cognitive process of designers is required for creative design education and structure of design process.
