    We present a new numerical code to compute non-axisymmetric eigenmodes of rapidly rotating relativistic stars by adopting spatially conformally flat approximation of general relativity. The approximation suppresses the radiative degree of freedom of relativistic gravity and the field equations are cast into a set of elliptic equations. The code is tested against the low-order f- and p-modes of slowly rotating stars for which a good agreement is observed in frequencies computed by our new code and those computed by the full theory. Entire sequences of the low order counter-rotating f-modes are computed, which are susceptible to an instability driven by gravitational radiation.Comment: 3 figures. To appear in Phys.Rev.

    Exact renormalization group equation in presence of rescaling anomaly

    Wilson's approach to renormalization group is reanalyzed for supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Usual demonstration of exact renormalization group equation must be modified due to the presence of the so called Konishi anomaly under the rescaling of superfields. We carry out the explicit computation for N=1 SUSY Yang-Mills theory with the simpler, gauge invariant regularization method, recently proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Murayama. The result is that the Wilsonian action S_M consists of two terms, i.e. the non anomalous term, which obeys Polchinski's flow equation and Fujikawa-Konishi determinant contribution.     Atomically straight steps on vicinal Si (111) surfaces prepared by step-parallel current in the kink-up direction

    We demonstrate that annealing of a vicinal Si(111) surface at about 800 C with a direct current in the direction that ascends the kinks enhances the formation of atomically straight step edges over micrometer lengths, while annealing with a current in the opposite direction does not. Every straight step edge has the same atomic configuration U(2,0), which is useful as a template for the formation of a variety of nanostructures. A phenomenological model based on electromigration of charged mobile atoms explains the observed current-polarity dependent behavior.Comment: Accepted for publication in Appl. Phys. Lett.
