    Semi-quantitative and qualitative evaluation of pial leptomeningeal collateral circulation in acute ischemic stroke of the anterior circulation: the Careggi Collateral Score

    Introduction: The imaging of ischemic penumbra in acute stroke is a debated issue and establishing commonly accepted criteria is difficult. Computerized tomography-perfusion studies conducted in animals have showed that the modifications occurring in the brain parenchima are part of a dynamic and progressive process involving the microcirculation. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new angiographic classification of collateral circulation in patients with acute ischemic stroke, with a possible correlation with the clinical outcome. Materials and methods: The basal angiograms of 57 patients with acute ischemic stroke is the territory of anterior circulation secondary to a major occlusion, who underwent endovascular treatment, were retrospectively reviewed and collaterals were classified according to our novel Careggi Collateral Score in 6 grades (0-6). The clinical outcome after 3 months was evaluated with modified Rankin Scale. A ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve analysis identified a cut-off value of 1. Results: Patients with favorable collateral circulation (grades 2-5) showed a significant correlation with good clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale ≤2). Conclusions: The Careggi Collateral Score resulted a useful tool to evaluate the chance of obtaining a favorable result with endovascular treatment in patients with acute ischemic stroke in the anterior circulation secondary to the occlusion of a major artery

    On-component multilayer tri-Axial capacitive probe for clearance measurement

    In this paper, an on-component triaxial capacitive probe for clearance measurement (static and dynamic measurement of distance) is proposed and studied. The device is designed to be deposited onto machinery components or complex structures and is aimed at reducing the impact of probe mounting on the monitored component. The problem is discussed from a theoretical point a view and then supported by the development of a prototype in screen printed technology. The results prove the feasibility of this innovative device

    Development of a non-invasive thermometric system for fluids in pipes

    In this paper a non-invasive thermometric system for the measurement of the temperature of fluids in pipes based on the dual heat flux method is presented. The proposed solution is a possible alternative to the employment of thermowells in industrial applications. The proposed sensing system, is based on the dual heat flux method, a technique used in biomedical field. The applicability of such a measurement system in the field of interest is studied taking into account its component performance and how they influence the overall system behavior. A prototype system exploiting RTD sensors with measurement accuracy lower than 1°C has been designed, obtaining performances comparable to the thermowell ones. To reach such an accuracy a dedicated front-end electronics has been developed

    Habitat loss and fragmentation are threatening amphibians by increasing population isolation. However, artificial waterbodies created for livestockmay contrast this phenomenon by providing surrogate habitats for amphibians. Here, we performed a genetic study on an amphibian species, Lissotriton vulgaris meridionalis, in a rural area in central Italy where natural wetlands are disappearing and drinking troughs for cattle watering are widespread. Specifically, we tested a panel of microsatellite markers to identify a suitable tool for addressing conservation genetic issues of this species that is undergoing severe local decline. Twelve of the 20 tested loci produced reliable amplifications and were polymorphic. Three distinct units with a low level of gene flow were distinguished and the population genetic structuring overlapped with geographic distribution. Such loci will be useful to assess the genetic diversity of the species across multiscale levels for its management and conservation
