    The coordination of the Law degree’s final dissertation at the UPF: operation and lessons after two years of experience

    [ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es doble: por un lado, presentar el funcionamiento del “Trabajo de fin de Grado” en el Grado en Derecho de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra; por otro, analizar la experiencia acumulada durante estos dos años y extraer algunas lecciones que, sobre todo desde el punto de vista de la organización y la coordinación, puedan resultar útiles para otros centros y universidades. Tras una breve introducción, el trabajo dibuja el complejo marco normativo en el que se inscribe la asignatura “Trabajo de fin de Grado” en la Universitat Pompeu Fabra. A continuación, recoge aquellas constricciones y consideraciones preliminares que inspiraron su diseño. Este breve análisis sirve para contextualizar las páginas posteriores, que se centran en las etapas que comprende la asignatura y las principales funciones de coordinación asociadas a cada una de ellas. El trabajo concluye con una reflexión en torno a las principales lecciones aprendidas tras dos años de funcionamiento de la asig[EN] The goal of this paper is twofold: first, it aims at presenting the operation of the Law Degree’s final dissertation at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra; and second, it seeks to analyze the experience accumulated over the past two years and to draw some lessons that – specially with regards to its organization and coordination– may prove helpful to other institutions and universities. After a short introduction, the paper sketches the complex normative framework surrounding the course “Degree’s final dissertation” at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Following this, the paper describes those constrains and initial considerations that informed its design. This brief analysis provides the necessary context to the following pages, which focus on the several stages the course includes and the main coordination activities attached to them.     Monosomal Karyotype at the Time of Diagnosis or Transplantation Predicts Outcomes of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Myelodysplastic Syndrome

    AbstractVarious cytogenetic risk scoring systems may determine prognosis for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We evaluated 4 different risk scoring systems in predicting outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). We classified 124 patients with MDS using the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS), the revised International Prognostic Scoring System (R-IPSS), Armand's transplantation-specific cytogenetic grouping, and monosomal karyotype (MK) both at the time of diagnosis and at alloHCT. After adjusting for other important factors, MK at diagnosis (compared with no MK) was associated with poor 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) (27% [95% confidence interval, 12% to 42%] versus 39% [95% confidence interval, 28% to 50%], P = .02) and overall survival (OS) (29% [95% confidence interval, 14% to 44%] versus 47% [95% confidence interval, 36% to 59%], P = .02). OS but not DFS was affected by MK at alloHCT. MK frequency was uncommon in low-score R-IPPS and IPSS. Although IPSS and R-IPSS discriminated good/very good groups from poor/very poor groups, patients with intermediate-risk scores had the worst outcomes and, therefore, these scores did not show a progressive linear discriminating trend. Cytogenetic risk score change between diagnosis and alloHCT was uncommon and did not influence OS. MK cytogenetics in MDS are associated with poor survival, suggesting the need for alternative or intensified approaches to their treatment

The sample is assumed to be cleaned from objects with quasar properties.     A Connection between Colony Biomass and Death in Caribbean Reef-Building Corals

    Increased sea-surface temperatures linked to warming climate threaten coral reef ecosystems globally. To better understand how corals and their endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) respond to environmental change, tissue biomass and Symbiodinium density of seven coral species were measured on various reefs approximately every four months for up to thirteen years in the Upper Florida Keys, United States (1994–2007), eleven years in the Exuma Cays, Bahamas (1995–2006), and four years in Puerto Morelos, Mexico (2003–2007). For six out of seven coral species, tissue biomass correlated with Symbiodinium density. Within a particular coral species, tissue biomasses and Symbiodinium densities varied regionally according to the following trends: Mexico≥Florida Keys≥Bahamas. Average tissue biomasses and symbiont cell densities were generally higher in shallow habitats (1–4 m) compared to deeper-dwelling conspecifics (12–15 m). Most colonies that were sampled displayed seasonal fluctuations in biomass and endosymbiont density related to annual temperature variations. During the bleaching episodes of 1998 and 2005, five out of seven species that were exposed to unusually high temperatures exhibited significant decreases in symbiotic algae that, in certain cases, preceded further decreases in tissue biomass. Following bleaching, Montastraea spp. colonies with low relative biomass levels died, whereas colonies with higher biomass levels survived. Bleaching- or disease-associated mortality was also observed in Acropora cervicornis colonies; compared to A. palmata, all A. cervicornis colonies experienced low biomass values. Such patterns suggest that Montastraea spp. and possibly other coral species with relatively low biomass experience increased susceptibility to death following bleaching or other stressors than do conspecifics with higher tissue biomass levels

    Dissociation between the Activity of the Right Middle Frontal Gyrus and the Middle Temporal Gyrus in Processing Semantic Priming

    The aim of this event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to test whether the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) would show differential sensitivity to the effect of prime-target association strength on repetition priming. In the experimental condition (RP), the target occurred after repetitive presentation of the prime within an oddball design. In the control condition (CTR), the target followed a single presentation of the prime with equal probability of the target as in RP. To manipulate semantic overlap between the prime and the target both conditions (RP and CTR) employed either the onomatopoeia “oink” as the prime and the referent “pig” as the target (OP) or vice-versa (PO) since semantic overlap was previously shown to be greater in OP. The results showed that the left MTG was sensitive to release of adaptation while both the right MTG and MFG were sensitive to sequence regularity extraction and its verification. However, dissociated activity between OP and PO was revealed in RP only in the right MFG. Specifically, target “pig” (OP) and the physically equivalent target in CTR elicited comparable deactivations whereas target “oink” (PO) elicited less inhibited response in RP than in CTR. This interaction in the right MFG was explained by integrating these effects into a competition model between perceptual and conceptual effects in priming processing

    Happy to help? A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of performing acts of kindness on the well-being of the actor

    © 2018 The Authors. Do acts of kindness improve the well-being of the actor? Recent advances in the behavioural sciences have provided a number of explanations of human social, cooperative and altruistic behaviour. These theories predict that people will be ‘happy to help’ family, friends, community members, spouses, and even strangers under some conditions. Here we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the experimental evidence that kindness interventions (for example, performing ‘random acts of kindness’) boost subjective well-being. Our initial search of the literature identified 489 articles; of which 24 (27 studies) met the inclusion criteria (total N = 4045). These 27 studies, some of which included multiple control conditions and dependent measures, yielded 52 effect sizes. Multi-level modeling revealed that the overall effect of kindness on the well-being of the actor is small-to-medium (δ = 0.28). The effect was not moderated by sex, age, type of participant, intervention, control condition or outcome measure. There was no indication of publication bias. We discuss the limitations of the current literature, and recommend that future research test more specific theories of kindness: taking kindness-specific individual differences into account; distinguishing between the effects of kindness to specific categories of people; and considering a wider range of proximal and distal outcomes. Such research will advance our understanding of the causes and consequences of kindness, and help practitioners to maximise the effectiveness of kindness interventions to improve well-being

    A Kernel for Open Source Drug Discovery in Tropical Diseases

    Open source drug discovery, a promising alternative avenue to conventional patent-based drug development, has so far remained elusive with few exceptions. A major stumbling block has been the absence of a critical mass of preexisting work that volunteers can improve through a series of granular contributions. This paper introduces the results from a newly assembled computational pipeline for identifying protein targets for drug discovery in ten organisms that cause tropical diseases. We have also experimentally tested two promising targets for their binding to commercially available drugs, validating one and invalidating the other. The resulting kernel provides a base of drug targets and lead candidates around which an open source community can nucleate. We invite readers to donate their judgment and in silico and in vitro experiments to develop these targets to the point where drug optimization can begin
