    [ES] El siglo XVIII ver谩, con la instauraci贸n del real cuerpo de ingenieros militares en el a帽o 1711, el advenimiento de una nueva figura que transformar谩 las caracter铆sticas gr谩ficas de la cartograf铆a espa帽ola. El ingeniero militar, dotado de nuevas herramientas cartogr谩ficas normalizadas, iniciar谩 un proceso de definici贸n objetiva de los territorios espa帽oles del Nuevo Mundo, que le aleja de las cartograf铆as y planimetr铆as urbanas y militares que caracterizaron el proceso de conquista y colonizaci贸n los dos siglos anteriores. Para estudiar las caracter铆sticas de estas nuevas cartograf铆as se analiza el plano de Antonio de Arredondo para la ciudad de San Agust铆n de la Florida, ya que el mismo ejemplifica las caracter铆sticas gr谩ficas y los principios te贸ricos que sustentaron el proceso de implantaci贸n del ingeniero militar espa帽ol en el Nuevo Mundo en las primeras d茅cadas del siglo XVIII.[EN] The 18th Century saw, with the establishment of the Royal Engineers Corps in 1711, the arrival of a new figure which would transform the graphical characteristics of Spanish Cartography. The military engineer, equipped with new regulatory cartographic tools, began the process of objectively defining Spanish territories in the New World, which would be a move away from the urban and military cartography and planimetries which were characteristic of the conquest and colonialization of the previous centuries.     Direct measurement of the speed of sound using a microphone and a speaker

    [EN] We present a simple and accurate experiment to obtain the speed of sound in air using a conventional speaker and a microphone connected to a computer. A free open source digital audio editor and recording computer software application allows determination of the timeofflight of the wave for different distances, from which the speed of sound is calculated.     Efectos de un programa de actividad f铆sica sobre los par谩metros cardiovasculares en una poblaci贸n de la tercera edad

    En este estudio se analizaron los cambios a nivel cardiovascular, referidos a par谩metros de frecuencia card铆aca y tensi贸n arterial, en una actividad de mantenimiento para la tercera edad en la ciudad de Huesca, organizado por el Patronato Municipal de Deportes, en su actividad de Gerontogimnasia. Los sujetos estudiados fueron 67 hombres y mujeres que realizaban la actividad de Gerontogimnasia en diferentes horarios, con edades comprendidas entre los 64 y los 82 a帽os. Fueron sometidos al test subm谩ximo de Harvard utilizando el Indice de Rendimiento del test Ruffier-Dickson. El estudio consisti贸 en realizar dos test, en un intervalo de 5 meses y cuantificar los par谩metros anteriormente citados, para observar si se produc铆an cambios significativos en su condici贸n f铆sica. Encontramos diferencias significativas en el 铆ndice de rendimiento, basado en la frecuencia card铆aca, y en la tensi贸n arterial media, en consonancia con los resultados obtenidos en otros estudios realizados sobre este tema. En cualquier caso debemos tener presente que la pr谩ctica de la actividad f铆sica no tiene como 煤nico objetivo la mejora de los par谩metros fisiol贸gicos, sino que aporta beneficios a nivel ps铆quico, sociol贸gico, afectivo..

    Association between the New COVID-19 Cases and Air Pollution with Meteorological Elements in Nine Counties of New York State

    The principal objective of this article is to assess the possible association between the number of COVID-19 infected cases and the concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3), atmospheric pollutants related to people鈥檚 mobility in urban areas, taking also into account the effect of meteorological conditions. We fit a generalized linear mixed model which includes spatial and temporal terms in order to detect the effect of the meteorological elements and COVID-19 infected cases on the pollutant concentrations. We consider nine counties of the state of New York which registered the highest number of COVID-19 infected cases. We implemented a Bayesian method using integrated nested Laplace approximation (INLA) with a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE). The results emphasize that all the components used in designing the model contribute to improving the predicted values and can be included in designing similar real-world data (RWD) models. We found only a weak association between PM2.5 and ozone concentrations with COVID-19 infected cases. Records of COVID-19 infected cases and other covariates data from March to May 2020 were collected from electronic health records (EHRs) and standard RWD sources

    Using a mobile phone acceleration sensor in physics experiments on free and damped harmonic oscillations

    We have used a mobile phone acceleration sensor, and the Accelerometer Monitor application for Android, to collect data in physics experiments on free and damped oscillations. Results for the period, frequency, spring constant, and damping constant agree very well with measurements obtained by other methods.     On Motzkin鈥檚 problem in the circle group

This is the analogue in the circle group of a well-known problem of Motzkin, originally posed for sets of integers. We make a first treatment of this circle-group analogue, for finite sets D of missing differences, using techniques from ergodic theory, graph theory and the geometry of numbers. Our results include an exact solution when D has two elements at least one of which is irrational. When every element of D is rational, the problem is equivalent to estimating the independence ratio of a circulant graph. In the case of two rational elements, we give an estimate for this ratio in terms of the odd girth of the graph, which is asymptotically sharp and also recovers the classical solution of Cantor and Gordon to Motzkin鈥檚 original problem for two missing differences.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    PEM automotive stack model with experimental validation

    Dynamic models of PEM stacks are the basis to design controllers for appropriate performance, maximum efficiency and minimum degradation. Fluid dynamic models of different dimensions can be found in the literature; however, these models are rarely used to improve the control laws and strategies. This work presents a control oriented 1+1D model (distributed in the direction of the stack flow channels). The model is based on a similar model presented by M.
