On the Chinese Exchange Rate Regime: an Attempt to Flexibility during 2015

    Get PDF
This study will demonstrate, through an econometric and asset allocation approach, if and how the Chinese exchange rate regime was changing during 2015. Particularly, China to improve its exchange rate formation system implemented, during July and August 2015, three depreciation as a step toward a market-oriented exchange rate. This situation, along with the new right of the RMB to be an international currency in SDR should generate a loss of weight about the USD in the Chinese basket peg. For this reason, moving from Frankel-Wei’s basic econometric model - but with some appropriate changes - our objective is to verify if the Chinese monetary policy about the exchange rate has affected the inner balance of the Chinese basket-peg leading it towards a flexible exchange rate regime

    Coup d\u27oeil

coup d\u27oeil translates as stroke of eye; it also means a sudden blink or glimpse. It was used as a military term referring to a general\u27s ability to assess with a single glance the advantages and disadvantages of a battlefield. I have titled this thesis coup d\u27oeil because it addresses the general lack of strategy and analysis by viewers of popular images. Images are omnipresent; they guide and influence humanity. They are not inherently adversarial, but when they assault both our conscious and unconscious minds, they can be extremely influential and destructive. The images in this thesis are similarly made to manipulate. coup d\u27oeil has two main categories of images: the real (images taken of the consumer or viewer) and the simulated (images produced for the consumer or viewer). Through the juxtaposition of images of the viewer and for the viewer, the thesis installation exposes this relationship between the viewer and the media

Teaching American English Pronunciation in a Spanish Speaking Context: A Guide for EFL Teachers in Chile

    Get PDF
This field project addresses the lack of education surrounding pronunciation teaching, and it specifically responds to the opportunities available within English as a Foreign Language settings. This project is especially relevant to English language teachers who would like to study pronunciation teaching and its history. The objective of this research is to inform educators of the validity of teaching pronunciation and to teach educators effective strategies that can be used. Theories of Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis form the foundation of this project, as well as theories of Interlanguage and Markedness. The literature review includes extensive research into the subject matter of pronunciation teaching and Contrastive Analysis. The project is a video-lecture series to support the pronunciation instruction for native Spanish speakers. The Contrastive Analysis is between English and Spanish, and the video-lecture series was made for a specifically Chilean audience

Semiconductor electrochemistry approach to passivity and passivity breakdown of metals and metallic alloys

    Get PDF
A critical appraisal of the use of the theory of semiconductors in characterising passive films on metals and alloys is provided, with special emphasis on the use of Mott – Schottky theory for the location of characteristic energy levels of the passive film – electrolyte junction. Some inconsistencies between theory and experimental results in the case of thin passive films are discussed together with possible alternative ways for overcoming such problems. The role of semiconducting properties in determining the pitting behaviour of passive films on W in solutions containing halide is presented and discussed. The validity of a recently proposed correlation between the solid state properties of passive films and the pitting potential is critically reviewed

    The volume scanner optical performance

The optical performance of a volume scanner is analyzed using modelling software. The existence of an embedded scattering volume with a 2.5% difference in scattering coefficient from the host media may be detected

Photocurrent Spectroscopy Applied to the Characterization of Passive Films on Sputter-Deposited Ti-Zr Alloys

A photoelectrochemical investigation on thin (613 nm) mixed oxides grown on sputter-deposited Ti–Zr alloys of different composition by air exposure and by anodizing (formation voltage, UF = 4 V/SCE) was carried out. The experimental results showed that the optical band gap increases with increasing Zr content in both air formed and anodic films. Such behaviour is in agreement with the theoretical expectation based on the correlation between the band gap values of oxides and the difference of electronegativity of their constituents. The flat band potential of the mixed oxides was found to be almost independent on the Ti/Zr ratio into the film and more anodic with respect to those estimated for oxide grown on pure Zr. The semiconducting or insulating character of the investigated films was strongly influenced by the forming conditions and the alloy composition

Small Extracellular Vesicles from Human Amniotic Fluid Samples as Promising Theranostics

Since the first evidence that stem cells can provide pro-resolving effects via paracrine secretion of soluble factors, growing interest has been addressed to define the most ideal cell source for clinical translation. Leftover or clinical waste samples of human amniotic fluid obtained following prenatal screening, clinical intervention, or during scheduled caesarean section (C-section) delivery at term have been recently considered an appealing source of mesenchymal progenitors with peculiar regenerative capacity. Human amniotic fluid stem cells (hAFSC) have been demonstrated to support tissue recovery in several preclinical models of disease by exerting paracrine proliferative, anti-inflammatory and regenerative influence. Small extracellular vesicles (EVs) concentrated from the hAFSC secretome (the total soluble trophic factors secreted in the cell-conditioned medium, hAFSC-CM) recapitulate most of the beneficial cell effects. Independent studies in preclinical models of either adult disorders or severe diseases in newborns have suggested a regenerative role of hAFSC-EVs. EVs can be eventually concentrated from amniotic fluid (hAF) to offer useful prenatal information, as recently suggested. In this review, we focus on the most significant aspects of EVs obtained from either hAFSC and hAF and consider the current challenges for their clinical translation, including isolation, characterization and quantification methods

Extracellular Vesicles as Natural, Safe and Efficient Drug Delivery Systems

    Get PDF
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are particles naturally released from cells, delimited by a lipid bilayer, carrying functionally active biological molecules. In addition to their physiological role in cellular communication, the interest of the scientific community has recently turned to the use of EVs as vehicles for delivering therapeutic molecules. Several attempts are being made to ameliorate drug encapsulation and targeting, but these efforts are thwarted if the starting material does not meet stringent quality criteria. Here, we take a step back to the sources and isolation procedures that could guarantee significant improvements in the purification of EVs to be used as drug carriers, highlighting the advantages and shortcomings of each approac
