Expansion of periodic boundary condition for 3-D FEM analysis using edge elements

    Get PDF
The application of periodic boundary conditions in the analysis of three-dimensional magnetic fields by finite element methods (FEMs) leads to a substantial reduction of computation labor and storage. The expansion of the condition for magnetostatic curl-curl formulation with the magnetic vector potential employing edge tetrahedral elements is discussed. Differences between the definitions of the condition for nodal and edge elements are examined. The vectorial nature of edge elements is emphasized and associated difficulties in the formulation and application of the condition are carefully analyzed and overcome. Details for computer implementation are given and a simple test problem to verify the validity of the software is proposed. Advantages gained when the condition is used for TEAM Workshop problem 13 as an example are shown </p

Anatomical Anomalies of Carotid-Vertebral Arteries in Patients with Dizziness and Impaired Hearing

Currently, Doppler ultrasound examinations are of particular importance, including continuous wave Doppler and color-coded pulsed wave Doppler. Excellent images are obtained using contrast computed tomography angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which give greater understanding of blood flow in the cranial and intracranial vessels under normal conditions and in pathological situations caused by both anatomical anomalies and acquired abnormalities. Our previous studies, concerning the analysis of the frequency and types of anatomical anomalies of the cranial arteries, i.e. vertebral and carotid arteries, in patients with dizziness and impaired hearing, demonstrated that hypoplasia of the right vertebral artery was the most common anatomical anomaly occurring in 58.7% of cases, of which 51.7% were women and 6.9% men; hypoplasia of the left vertebral artery, occurring in 24.7% of the study group, of which 13.8% were women and 10.3% men; hypoplasia of the right internal carotid artery found in 3.4% of women and of the left internal carotid artery in 6.8% of cases, 3.4% in women and 3.4% in men; and hypoplasia of the right common carotid artery was reported in 3.4% of men, whereas critical stenosis of the left subclavian artery with subclavian steal syndrome was observed in 3.4% of women. Although tinnitus was the most frequent symptom occurring in those patients, in this study dizziness was most common in patients admitted to the Department for the diagnosis, possibly because they found it more disturbing

Delayed perforation of posterior pharyngeal wall caused by dislodged bioresorbable interbody cage. Case report

A 48-year-old man was admitted for the management of congenital anomalies: ArnoldÔÇôChiari type I malformation combined with odontoid upward migration. He also had degenerative stenosis of the spinal canal by spurs at C2/C3 and C3/C4 levels. Osseous deformities caused ischaemic changes of the brainstem as well as spinal cord compression. Authors used the Biocage ÔÇô interbody cage covered by bioresorbable layer to fill the surgically created gap after removal of the right part of C3 vertebral body. Twenty-seven months after implantation, the implant was extruded through posterior pharyngeal wall. Authors describe this unusual case and discuss possible causes of Biocage extrusion

Kampania permanentna versus kampania, której nie było. Rzecz o wyborze prezydenta miasta Kielce

The purpose of the paper is to try to answer the question of the efficiency of permanent campaigns. In the context of elections to local governments, the behavior of the electorate seems to be influenced by factors that are somewhat different than in the case of presidential or parliamentary elections. Particular assets are the directly verifiable achievements of the candidates. Town mayors running for office for a second term are somewhat privileged, provided that during their office they managed to avoid making grave mistakes or behaving with negligence. The analysis concerns the elections for the office of mayor of Kielce in 2010, which were chosen due to the specific activity of the main candidate, that is the then mayor of Kielce, Wojciech Lubawski. The candidateÔÇÖs limited election activity justifies the hypothesis that he did not run a permanent campaign and raises the question of how the strategy he adopted influenced the election results in Kielce. The purpose of the paper is to try to answer the question of the efficiency of permanent campaigns. Background: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in a form of a polyp of the uterine cervix occurs mainly in young women in their second decade of life. The characteristic microscopic features are: the submucosal cambium layer and the presence of rhabdomyoblasts in the stroma. So far the treatment has not been well defined and ranges from conservative to radical surgery. Case: The presented case is a 22-year old woman with cervical polyp. Polypectomy with D&C was performed in 2005 and the microscopic examination revealed rhabdomyosarcoma botryoides. Detailed examination diagnosed stage Ia of the disease. The patient received 6 cycles of chemotherapy (Vincristine and Actinomycin). Conclusion: Conservative treatment may be considered in young women with favorable prognostic factors who wish to preserve their fertility. Polypectomy followed by chemotherapy is a possible option for such patients.Mi─Ösak groniasty mo┼╝e wyst─Öpowa─ç w postaci polipa szyjki macicy, g┼éownie u m┼éodych kobiet w drugiej dekadzie ┼╝ycia. Investigation of traffic conflicts at signalised intersections in Warsaw

    Get PDF
Although traffic safety situation in general is improving, the numbers of pedestrians and cyclists hit when crossing a road have not significantly decreased recently. Based on police accident records for years 2010-2014, some 735 pedestrians and 505 cyclists were hit by motor vehicles in Warsaw. Investigation reported in this paper is a part of the European project InDeV. One aim of the project is to find correlation between accidents and traffic conflicts and thus provide a solid base for using surrogate safety measures as safety diagnostic tools. Three typical signalised intersections in Warsaw were selected for video recording. Relevant encounters between motor vehicles and vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists) were identified and analysed using programs RUBA and T-Analyst. The paper describes the semiautomatic video data processing and problems regarding some technical and methodological aspects of conflict detection. Based on video analysis of 24 hours of recording for each intersection, preliminary characteristics of encounters between pedestrians/cyclists and motorised vehicles have been developed. Statistical distributions of encounter parameters such as time-to-collision (TTC) and post-encroachment time (PET) are presented. These will be used in the development of appropriate safety indicators
