    At the Yang-Lee edge singularity, finite-size scaling behavior is used to measure the low-lying excitation spectrum of the Ising quantum spin chain for free boundary conditions.     Finite size scaling of the correlation length above the upper critical dimension

    We show numerically that correlation length at the critical point in the five-dimensional Ising model varies with system size L as L^{5/4}, rather than proportional to L as in standard finite size scaling (FSS) theory. Our results confirm a hypothesis that FSS expressions in dimension d greater than the upper critical dimension of 4 should have L replaced by L^{d/4} for cubic samples with periodic boundary conditions.     Specific heat of the simple-cubic Ising model

    We provide an expression quantitatively describing the specific heat of the Ising model on the simple-cubic lattice in the critical region. This expression is based on finite-size scaling of numerical results obtained by means of a Monte Carlo method. It agrees satisfactorily with series expansions and with a set of experimental results. Our results include a determination of the universal amplitude ratio of the specific-heat divergences at both sides of the critical point.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure

    Clinicians aim to identify abnormalities, and distinguish harmful from harmless abnormalities. In sports medicine, measures of physical function such as strength, balance and joint flexibility are used as diagnostic tools to identify causes of pain and disability and monitor progression in response to an intervention. Comparing results from clinical measures against ‘normal’ values guides decision-making regarding health outcomes. Understanding ‘normal’ is therefore central to appropriate management of disease and disability. However, ‘normal’ is difficult to clarify and definitions are dependent on context. ‘Normal’ in the clinical setting is best understood as an appropriate state of physical function. Particularly as disease, pain and sickness are expected occurrences of being human, understanding ‘normal’ at each stage of the lifespan is essential to avoid the medicalisation of usual life processes. Clinicians use physical measures to assess physical function and identify disability. Accurate diagnosis hinges on access to ‘normal’ reference values for such measures. However our knowledge of ‘normal’ for many clinical measures in sports medicine is limited. Improved knowledge of normal physical function across the lifespan will assist greatly in the diagnosis and management of pain, disease and disability

    Critical line of an n-component cubic model

    We consider a special case of the n-component cubic model on the square lattice, for which an expansion exists in Ising-like graphs. We construct a transfer matrix and perform a finite-size-scaling analysis to determine the critical points for several values of n. Furthermore we determine several universal quantities, including three critical exponents. For n<2, these results agree well with the theoretical predictions for the critical O(n) branch. This model is also a special case of the (Nα,NβN_\alpha,N_\beta) model of Domany and Riedel. It appears that the self-dual plane of the latter model contains the exactly known critical points of the n=1 and 2 cubic models. For this reason we have checked whether this is also the case for 1<n<2. However, this possibility is excluded by our numerical results

    Magnetization reversal times in the 2D Ising model

    We present a theoretical framework which is generally applicable to the study of time scales of activated processes in systems with Brownian type dynamics. This framework is applied to a prototype system: magnetization reversal times in the 2D Ising model. Direct simulation results for the magnetization reversal times, spanning more than five orders of magnitude, are compared with theoretical predictions; the two agree in most cases within 20%.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
