    Spontaneous Magnetization through Non-Abelian Vortex Formation in Rotating Dense Quark Matter

    When a color superconductor of high density QCD is rotating, superfluid vortices are inevitably created along the rotation axis. In the color-flavor locked phase realized at the asymptotically large chemical potential, there appear non-Abelian vortices carrying both circulations of superfluid and color magnetic fluxes. A family of solutions has a degeneracy characterized by the Nambu-Goldtone modes CP2, associated with the color-flavor locked symmetry spontaneously broken in the vicinity of the vortex. In this paper, we study electromagnetic coupling of the non-Abelian vortices and find that the degeneracy is removed with the induced effective potential. We obtain one stable vortex solution and a family of metastable vortex solutions, both of which carry ordinary magnetic fluxes in addition to color magnetic fluxes. We discuss quantum mechanical decay of the metastable vortices by quantum tunneling, and compare the effective potential with the other known potentials, the quantum mechanically induced potential and the potential induced by the strange quark mass.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures; v2 revised published versio

    Vortices in high density QCD and Bose-Einstein condensates

    This thesis is dedicated to the study of two apparently different but closely related physical systems: vortex solutions arising in QCD at low temperature and ultra-high density on the one hand, and in Bose-Einstein condensates with multiple components of ultra-cold atoms on the other. In both physical systems, fractional vortices are nucleated in response to rotation, due to the superfluid nature of matter. Vortices in BEC condensates carry non-trivial circulation; in high density QCD they possess in addition non-Abelian color magnetic flux and ordinary magnetic flux, when electromagnetic effects are taken into account. These topological defects are considered in quark matter in the CFL phase, which has been proposed to be realized in the core of neutron stars. Particular attention is given to the modifications that the coupling with standard electromagnetism produces on the energy spectrum of elementary vortex solutions; also, the fate of vortices is considered when they reach the boundary of the CFL phase and connect with neutron and proton vortices in the npe phase. Considering rotating two-component BEC, which is also a focus of intense experimental and theoretical study today, the modifications on the vortex lattice induced by a tunable Rabi oscillations are investigated by numerical simulations. New vortex bound states are found and partner changing patterns are predicted to occur when the Rabi frequency is gradually increased. The structure of a vortex lattice is investigated for a three- component BEC, whose features are also relevant for the physics of vortex configurations in high-density QCD: the only possible structures are found to be the triangular Abrikosov lattice of fractional vortices and the vortex sheets, depending on the value of the inter- component coupling constant

    Nel Prologus al suo Liber de natura rerum (1225 ca.-1260 ca.), il domenicano Tommaso di Cantimpr√© elenca le 15 fonti principali del suo lavoro. Al penultimo posto di tale lista, egli pone il Physiologus, descrivendolo come come un‚Äôauctoritas ‚Äúabbastanza succinta e utile in diverse occasioni‚ÄĚ. Partendo da questa indicazione, il presente articolo indaga quindi due aspetti di questo rapporto, ovvero come e quanto il trattatello di origine alessandrina √® effettivamente usato nell‚Äôenciclopedia domenicana, e quale versione di tale fonte era sul tavolo di lavoro tommasiano durante la stesura del Liber.In the Prologus to his Liber de natura rerum (1225 ca.-1260 ca.), the Dominican Thomas of Cantimpr√© lists the 15 sources he used most during the writing of the encyclopedia. In the penultimate place on this list, he puts the Physiologus and describes it as an auctoritas ‚Äúquite succinct and useful on several occasions‚ÄĚ. Starting from this indication, the present article investigates therefore two aspects of this relationship. First, how and how much the Alexandrian treatise is actually used in the Dominican encyclopedia.     Non-Abelian monopole-vortex complex

    In the context of softly broken N=2 supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD), with a hierarchical gauge symmetry breaking SU(N+1) -> U(N) -> 1, at scales v1 and v2, respectively, where v1 >> v2, we construct monopole-vortex complex soliton-like solutions and examine their properties. They represent the minimum of the static energy under the constraint that the monopole and antimonopole positions sitting at the extremes of the vortex are kept fixed. They interpolate the 't Hooft-Polyakov-like regular monopole solution near the monopole centers and a vortex solution far from them and in between. The main result, obtained in the theory with Nf=N equal-mass flavors, is concerned with the existence of exact orientational CP(N-1) zero modes, arising from the exact color-flavor diagonal SU(N)_{C+F} global symmetry. The "unbroken" subgroup SU(N) \subset SU(N+1) with which the na\"ive notion of non-Abelian monopoles and the related difficulties were associated, is explicitly broken at low energies. The monopole transforms nevertheless according to the fundamental representation of a new exact, unbroken SU(N) symmetry group, as does the vortex attached to it.
